I think Apple intentionally leaves "wasted space" at the top and bottom to make it easier to hold sideways. If it was all screen, you won't be able to rest your thumbs on the iPhone when holding it sideways without triggering the touchscreen.

This is just like when people complained about the iPad's "huge and ugly bezel".

I actually saw the usefulness in the Ipad. With the Iphone I don't think THAT much space is needed. I normally hold mine by the edge and am fine.

So with the EVO you might get a less polished OS with Android But you get:

Cheaper plan with Sprint
Free tv with Sprinttv
1500 anytime minutes with cheapest family plan
7 pm night and weekends
Unlimited mobile to mobile with any cellphone regardless of carrier
Mobile hotspot for up to 8 devices
4G

and.......wait for it.....A KICK STAND!

For me it is tough. I have a wife and a son and it's very hard to spend 170 bucks a month for 550 minutes and unlimited text for wife and me. It is more than home owners insurance, both of my cars insurance, all combined! I know people say, " If you can't afford it, don't get it. " It's not that I can't afford it. It's that it's hard to rationalize for such little in return from ATT.

Then " If you can't afford it, don't get it. " :D
Or if you dont like the price go with something cheaper.

Why you gotta be like dat? Your supposed to say, " Hey man, I have a secret ATT plan that I can give you info on. I will hook you up brotha from anotha motha. "

I can afford 170 a month. I would pay 200 bucks a month for 550 minutes and if ATT would personally send someone to my house every month to do a firework show in my yard. I would pay 250 bucks if said person was a midget in a umpa lumpa costume.

You hear that ATT?!?!? You could be making an extra 80 bucks a month from me. I expect such a feature to be available via the website for add on soon.

:D

Well I actually do have a secret AT&T trick.
PM me bro :D

Free mobile to mobile any carrier?

I did not know that!

Don't forget the EVO plays flash video!

Apple will play flash maybe like never?

Also it has a FM tuner and does voice to text texting

iPhone finally has a real contender

EVO? I had to Google it. Google hadn't even heard of it for the first page or so. It thought I wanted to buy a car. Real popular phone.

I get a kick of the people that come here and try to drum up support for all these random also-ran phones. Go to a BMW forum and ask "Hey if the new BMW is too small, are you gonna get the Subaru XL?" See what happens.

What I find really funny are the names of all these new phones. EVO. Incredible. Droid. Inspire. Perspire. Sweatball. Fruitbat. Why do all these companies try to sell us emotions/exclamations/superlatives? Haven't any of them noticed that the phone they're all trying so desperately to emulate and take away market share from is named for what it is...a PHONE?

To anyone thinking of buying this EVO thing. Remember, you are buying a piece of hardware that will be outdated and maybe even obsolete in 2 years, just like the next iPhone will likely be. But a few pixels bigger screen is not a replacement for a fantastic touch UI, integration with MobileMe, and access to the most well stocked and developed app store in the industry...those features won't be obsolete in 2 years.

When the T-Mobile G1 came out, people attempted to have the same discussions..."G1 will rule", "G1 has better specs", yada yada. Who has seen a G1 lately, let alone heard anyone talking about it?

I'm not even sure why people bother with any smart phone besides the iPhone. Are they trying to save money? Are they just dying to be different? (Heh...it used to be that owning an Apple product WAS different.) I think some people are just plain spastic and think they will find something better in another phone, so they buy it, then sell it, then try another one, and sell that, then get another iPhone, then trade that in for the next HTC Geoplexus Serenity Plus, which is quickly forgotten by everyone, including HTC, and the whole cycle starts again. Not sure how you could save money doing that.

Just an FM tuner? Where's the HAM radio? Can it send Morse code? Does it have a bottle opener? Fish scaler?

Now, voice to text SMS, that sounds like a very elegant solution. "Money, plead pick up sun milf at the shore. Our has gun shower."

Keep hittin' us with the awesome features.

Dude, you are hilarious! :D I love it.

Everything you said is true though. So many people wasting so much money only to find themselves back at the iPhone wondering why they ever left in the first place.

This is why people find Apple fans so smug.

They do it all on their own. No help needed :p

Wow you must live in a closet somewhere. Do you see R Kelly in there? Just about every tech site I know of has reported on this phone. This is also not the first thread on the phone here at macrumors. Glad you woke up from your coma today to discover whats happened since you slipped. :D

I get a kick of the people that come here and try to drum up support for all these random also-ran phones. Go to a BMW forum and ask "Hey if the new BMW is too small, are you gonna get the Subaru XL?" See what happens.

I personally do it because im glad YOU get a kick out of it. What else would you get a kick out of if it wasn't for people like me posting this. I guess I should have posted this thread on the Android forum. That is my fault. " Hey Android guys, would you switch from your errr android phone to the EVO if the new Iphone 4G screen is not bigger? " You know now that I think about it, sounds like a great idea. Wtf was I thinking asking current Iphone users like myself what they would do.

Who cares about names anyway? Do you really want them to name it the Aphone or something. Does the word phone need to be in the name so you can understand the concept of the device? Are you one of those types of people that buy books that have the word book on it just in case you confuse it with a magazine? :p

Welcome to technology. My laser pointer will be outdated in a year. Thanks for the information though. The EVO may have caught up on the UI and Mobileme is not used by many with an Iphone. Maybe some techies do use it, but general users don't. The app store argument is overated. A lot of the devs that make the best apps for the Iphone are already porting their apps over. Welcome to capitalism. They makes apps to make money, not make Apple's Iphone the best.

When the T-Mobile G1 came out, people attempted to have the same discussions..."G1 will rule", "G1 has better specs", yada yada. Who has seen a G1 lately, let alone heard anyone talking about it?

I have. I have seen several and seen several people talking about it here. You seem to remember it. Google is such a diverse company and makes so many things that their marketing for ONE product is not as vast as Apple.

I'm not even sure why people bother with any smart phone besides the iPhone. Are they trying to save money? Are they just dying to be different? (Heh...it used to be that owning an Apple product WAS different.) I can agree with your phone jumping comment. Yeah I don't understand why people switch phones more than they change their underwear.....BUT there are other phones on the market that suit other people's needs. The Iphone might be the best thing for your needs, maybe even mine at this point, but I won't tell someone else that what is perfect for them is stupid.

I will say you do come across as someone that is certainly " different ", but I will let everyone else that reads your comments figure out the context of my use of the word. Let me leave it to their imagination.

I don't work at a Radio Shack or a phone kiosk at a mall. I don't need to/can't keep up with 97 Android phones. The iPhone is much easier to keep up with. There's been 3 of them. Maybe if companies like HTC didn't make 20 models, they could concentrate on building one phone that truly gives the iPhone a run for it's money. When that happens, I won't need to Google it. Until then, I will remain in my coma.

One phone to RULE THEM ALL! Muhahahaha! :D

The App store is not overrated. Not sure if you kept up with current events but there was a little tizzy about this wonderful Android app that was downloaded by several thousand users. Turns out that free little app was collecting credit card info and sending it back to home base.

As much as people flog the App store and Apple's grip on it, it's a good thing. It keeps the trash out and lets us enjoy our phones and have some peace of mind knowing stuff like that, won't happen or if it does, is dealt with swiftly.

ON the other side, you have jail breakers and then you have jail breakers that steal apps, never paying a dime for them. For those types of people, you don't get to complain. Go BUY the apps these hard working developers create and support them. THEN and only then can you come in and complain. Until that point - you don't get to complain. ;)

Even if the screen is slightly smaller, it will have higher resolution. That's a good thing.

I'm going to assume this post was a joke. :p If not... Smaller screen doesn't mean higher resolution... Means higher pixel density. The only real advantage is that you can look at it from closer, if your eyes can still focus on it at a distance where it will be noticeable.

Bigger and higher res screen is better. I never had pixel density issue with my iPhone. It'd be nice though to a have a phone I can set on a table (with the kickstand ;) ) and watch, possibly with a friend, a bit more comfortably than holding it in front of my face.

There's no sense in talking to these guys who are attracted mostly to hardware specs.

They aren't looking at the whole user experience imo.

It's like they'd rather have a Honda Civic with 400HP (EVO, Incredible), instead of a BMW with 350HP(iPhone).

Some people are like that I guess. To each his own.

It's not just the hardware specs of the phone... A polished OS isn't that valuable to me. I like having a phone I can hack around with. Also the HTC Sense UI is far more polished than the Nexus One which it is often compared to the iPhone.

By the end of the year, the EVO and the Incredible will be nothing more than a memory. Anyone remember the abomination call the Storm? Storm 2? What about the Palm Pre? Oh, no worries - Palm is going under. Lol.

That's because there are new Android phones being made by many manufacturers and each release several in a year. Each one better than the last.

The iPhone is made by ONE manufacturer ONCE a year. They will both be replaced by a new phone just as fast... The only difference is that Apple won't release the next one for another year. So you still FEEL like you have "the best phone out there" because you don't care about Android devices.

I was hoping Apple would have something breakthrough up their sleeves with the new phone but nothing I wanted is in this. Simple as that. Things I want:
  • Multitasking (Both)
  • Fast Data (Both, I guess... EVO has faster data but iPhone is "fast enough")
  • Tethering (EVO has 8 device access point mode)
  • Large Screen (EVO has roughly 1" bigger screen)
  • Quality Video (Both, No complete details on iPhone camera, but likely comparable)
  • Ability to develop AND USE my own apps for free (EVO)

The new iPhone is addressing a couple of these issues... but the EVO addresses all of them. I could pass on the Larger screen if Apple gave me free dev (You currently have to pay 99/year just to put software on ANY device. Even your own) and tethering with At&t.

If you really just want everything (well, not everything... everything that Apple wants you to do) to "Just Work" then, as always, go with Apple. :D

I would love to have an iPhone that suits my needs, but some of those items up there are deal-breakers for me.

No I did not hear about that. That is horrible. Honestly, I don't use apps that need that kind of information though. I don't trust them even if it comes from the Apple app store. If the site isn't https and a credible site, I don't give out my CC#. It is also a security risk to use such apps on your phone. If you lose your phone and someone finds it, bam, info gone! Sure you can pass code lock the phone but I personally dont want to enter a code every time I want to unlock my phone. That takes too much time for me when I am in a rush, which is often.

I do like Apple overseeing the app store. Yeah their policies are a little tight and weird at times, but it's nice to rely on those apps as (somewhat) safe. However THAT was not the context of my comments regarding the app store being overrated. I was referring to the apps available in the Android store lacking. I personally believe it is catching up and will catch up. Some of the best games on the Iphone are being ported by some of hte biggest devs. Why? They want to maximize their income by making their apps available to as many customers as possible. If you understand the concept which im sure you do, then you probably understand it is a matter of time before Android catches up. The marketshare of the Iphone is expected to slip to Android by 2012. The ONLY problem I see for the Android devs is making apps that will work with multiple resolutions. This is a feet that even Apple devs will need to tackle now with the Ipad, 3GS, and the new Iphone. It can be done. :D

iPhone`s screen is great size for me, but I want a higher resolution screen. With that happening in the new iPhone, I am going to buy it for sure! :D

The title of this thread is a little misleading. Makes it seem like people only want the EVO because the iphone screen isn't bigger.. With Sprints full refund return policy, I'll probably sign up and test the Evo for a couple weeks and see whether I truly like it. During that time, I'll wait and see if they're able to jailbreak the iphone (No way I would purchase the new iphone if I can't jailbreak it). Than I'll decide one or the other.

Sorry about the title. :p

I think the guy that makes Blackrain will be able to jailbreak it. It seems the beta version has already been jailbroken. If I may ask, what in jailbreaking would make you switch from the EVO to the Iphone?

Open software development. :) That handles one of my issues with the iPhone. Also MyWi (a jailbroken app) sets your iPhone up as a wireless access point as well.

A jailbroken iPhone HD would be good enough to get me to stay with the iPhone, but I don't want to risk losing my jailbreak. I have a 3G now so I know it's Pwnd4Life. If the next phone is as well I may get it still.

Same, I also have a JB3G and love it. With the new iphone, based on the leaked photos, apple has done what I've wanted in the newest model.

- High resolution screen
- Better Camera with flash
- Front facing camera
- Updated casing

Can't tell for sure but the speaker looks bigger on the new phone so I'd assume its upgraded as well. Apple still dissapoints me with their OS 4.0 but that's where jailbreaking solves that issue. I love my lockscreen news/alerts and 3G Unrestrictor.

At this point

Jailbroken iPhone 4 > HTC EVO > Jailbroken 3G(s) > Unjailbreakble iPhone 4
