Does the fingerprint scanner concern you?

This chip wouldn't even effect the size of the battery as the battery doesn't overlap the logic board. It might effect the placement of a larger processors or RAM, but not battery life

I don't care about the room. I am talking about Apple putting in the time and research into something the iPhone actually needs. My battery life on my iphone 5 is just ok. I would like to see better. They went and made the phone as thin as they could which in turn leaves to room for a bigger battery. I just want to see R&D spent of stuff that the iPhone already has that need some improvements. Than some fingerprint scanner.

----------

Eh, I would argue there is no real NEED for multiple things they added in the past.

Off the top of my head:
Maps with turn by turn? Yeah, we had that.
iRadio? yeah, we have this too

I am sure there are more. I wouldn't say adding a feature is pulling at straws. Frankly, we have no idea IF they are going to implement this let alone HOW. Am I excited for the feature? No. But if they did it right, I very well could be.

The more important point, and I mentioned this on page two, is really, why are people (not necessarily you) so paranoid about this thing. I can almost guarantee it would be OPTIONAL. If you think the evil corporation is going Minority Report on you, just don't use it. I mentioned this about Siri. I don't use it at all (not because of paranoia, but because I think it's utter crap).

----------

This is another thing. People think adding xyz means that there was room that could have been used for a battery. Currently. batteries are basically bricks. Unless we change battery tech drastically and make a battery that can "flow" into all other available space, we aren't sacrificing battery capacity for a new feature.

I agree that we really have no idea if Apple will even try this. I am still leaning on thinking they will not. I also agree that this is a feature the iPhone does not need.

I am not paranoid in the least. I could careless. I am sure Apple would do this right, but with there being other issues Apple could try to fix on the iPhone. I don't think we need a fingerprint scanner.

I think you're assuming that Apple can only work on one thing at a time; that it's either fingerprint scanner and nothing else or battery life improvements and nothing else.

No I know they can work on more, but the battery if just one thing Apple needs to work on. Like someone else said when was the last you saw Apple had hardware to a S model? It is software that sets the S apart. This may be a featuring in the making, but the S model is used to make improvements on the current model, and add a software feature that the 5 did not have so they can sell iPhones.

Lithium polymer (not a new tech by any means) can be credit card thin and any reasonable shape. Some smartphones use it buy I'm not sure if the iPhone does (no need currently).

There is no room on the current logic board for additional hardware obviously. So a new logic board will need to be made from scratch to accommodate extra hardware.

So it could be any shape size design etc. Even a design that the battery overlaps the board like many other smartphones.

Keep in mind to incorporate this we are talking a total redesign. New screen if the scanner is there, new housing if its there. New logic board. Etc.

Right, but is it feasible to cram it in every little space? I would think it would mess with things such as heat transfer and repairs/assembly.

I would think that it is not necessarily the same R&D people working on the camera who are working on the battery, who are working on the fabled fingerprint scanner. As such, one cannot simply say "there are other issues, fix them first". They make be working on that, simply just a different team.

Security and privacy are an issue. After datagate all the people I considered crazy I understood they were almost right....government is tracking everything... i don't want to give them my prints for free.

First of all fingerprints seem like a very minor identifer today. Taken a big back seat to DNA, etc.

How do we know that it isn't additonal security. Maybe you will be able to set things such that it will require a password AND the correct finger print? We make so many assumptions about products before we know what they mean.

As been stated before any expection of privacy or the correct use of private information is living in the wrong era and probably in the wrong parts of the world.

Yes, but look what was posted right before this. It would take almost a total redesign of the iPhone to make this happen. Apple goes for spec bumps with S models not design changes. Look at 2 years ago when people thought the 4S was going to be the 5. Apple is not ready for a total redesign nor do I think they will try to introduce the fingerprint scanner on the S. Did we not see the patent come through only a couple of weeks ago. This is still in the very early stages, and a lot of the time when Apple gets patents like this we don't see them for another 2 or 3 years, or ever. Sometimes they are just trying things out to see if they work. People on here are talking like it is a sure thing. I just don't think the research is there yet.

OMG..you realize how easy it would be for the government to get your fingerprints if they wanted to right? What do we fear the government will do with our fingerprints that they can't already do with our SS#, address, birth date, and place of employment?

Also, your friend didn't exactly need a crystal ball to know the government was using electronic surveillance on it's citizens. In 2008 the House and Senate passed a law permitting such activity, this was not a secret.

It will take a redesign of boards. We see that happen yearly, actually. But anyway, my comment was only on your statement, "they need to fix other things first". It had really nothing to do with whether or not we will see the scanner in th enew phone.

Yes I understand that they have different teams for different things, but what I stated does apply to what you said. I am saying that while the R&D are working on different projects. The S model is using to upgrade things that need it. You quoted my "they need to fix other things first" which is referring to the S model. Maybe you misunderstood what you quoted me for. That comment was made because I am saying they have to many other things to upgrade in the S model to add a scanner on the S.

I really don't think they do. The idea that the S model has to be this "internal/guts only" upgrade has essentially been set by the media, blogs, and users like us. Simply because Apple hasn't done anything else (and there have only been two S models thus far) is not evidence that they cannot or will not change things up for the future.

Like I said, I don't really expect this change. But Apple doesn't HAVE to do anything. They do what they want (think is best). All I am saying. :)

Yea I agree that is what Apple does, but I don't see Apple doing all things that would need to be done to add a scanner in an S model. I agree just because we have only seen spec bumps in S models that it is not enough evidence to say they will always do it. But if they are going to do an S model they would have to do a spec bump. It would be kind of confusing to have new hardware and still have the 5 name on it. If they do a hardware update they would have do a new 6. Have we not already seen pictures of the body, and it looks just the like the 5?

They could skip the S model all together. I honestly don't know. We have seen pics of what claim to be the body. Unfortunately, history has told us, that we see just as many fakes as we do legit parts, so I am not counting on this being true. Also, for all I know, we could see this fancy shamncy scanner on the front glass of the phone.

Lack of evidence is not evidence that something isn't coming.

And with all this back and forth I still woudln't expect it. :p

I don't want my thumb cut off, thanks.

The tech they bought a few years back can actually distinguish between living/dead tissue. So, you don't have to worry.

So first this scanner can figure out if you pick up a finger print from something, or if it is a real finger print. Now it can tell the difference between live flesh and dead flesh. Man the government needs to be contacting Apple for some help then.

This was actually legit (based on the information the company provided the public about their fingerprint scanner technology). If someone was lieing, it was the company themselves. I remember reading the document a while back.

But, tbh, telling the difference between live and dead flesh wouldn't be all that crazy.

Government agencies have been using scanners like that for a long time. Usually the use temp and moisture though. According to AuthenTec they use a different tech that does the same thing.

I think its more for trying to use a photocopy of a print though not for and actual severed limb. Lol

I still don't see this coming to the 5S. Or if it does it will be the 6. There's no sense in using the 5S name on a device with a different screen or housing.

S models are spec bumps and minor fixes/enhancements. Like the 3GS and 4S....I don't know why looking at history is so difficult for so many.

Yea, but man these rumors are like Pentagon level security. I have to think technology like this would be way to expensive to put on a phone. It seems like every question someone has about this thing. There is technology in place alright to answer. I guess it will be able to get the DNA from my fingerprint too, so they know for sure it it me.
