Does the fingerprint scanner concern you?

Ahh, didn't see that. What do you think is more "Apple"(assuming they are doing this)? Home button scanner or in-screen scanner?
I think behind the screen is more likely, but I like the idea of a sensor in the home button, because the Authentec capacitive sensor offers trackpad-like functionality to support gestures. Even those that see no value in a fingerprint sensor could benefit from an additional gesture area.

Little bit over the top. I for one would not bad mouth Samsung. I like the idea of a fingerprint scanner even if you don't. We are all different with different likes and dislikes, so if you and the OP want to go else where, by all means do so. ;)

Go else where ok. It seems this thread was started by someone that did not want a fingerprint scanner. Maybe you are in the wrong thread. I like Apple, but if they do this it is really just pulling at straws. It is a gimmick. There is no real need for this. It will not improve the iPhone experience.

And that is your opinion. I'll grant that by itself it's not a reason to buy a 5s (which I won't btw waiting for 6), but I think it would have a slight to moderate effect on the iPhone experience (again assuming it works). Feel free to tell us what your opinion is, but don't tell us what our opinion should be. You don't care for the fingerprint scanner, and I get that; however if it is used to allow us to securely make financial transactions and replace our need for cards, then I am looking forward to it...we'll see what they do with it. If it's buggy, then it might end up being the biggest reason to to get the 5s.

I am not telling you what you opinion should be. Tell me how this is going to help you not use a card for transactions.

1. Touch/swipe your iPhone 5S across the NFC device at the register.
2. The cost to check out appears on your screen with a prompt to confirm.
3. Press your thumb against the animated area on the screen to pay.
4. You're done.

Give Apple some credit, ehh? Apple wouldn't spend $340 million to acquire AuthenTec, and then tens of millions more to add the functionality to their phones if they didn't have a plan to make this feature/function work in a compelling way.

Also, it's possible for it to be arranged that anytime your card is used anywhere in the world you would receive a prompt on your phone. To approve the transaction you confirm with fingerprint; to deny you press another location on screen. You could also instantly report unauthorized activity. I' m not saying any of this will happen, but it needs to happen eventually and Apple could single handily make this a reality.

Wait, wait. I thought NFC was stupid and pointless. That is what Apple people have been saying since android has had it on their phones.

So what is the point in having to put the phone up to the scanner than have to put your finger on it? When I was using the nexus 4 you put the phone up to the machine and it transferred the money. Why the extra step?

Security, of course.

So it seems to me this has gone from being a just a fingerprint scanner to some high tech security feature. Wow who even knows if Apple is doing this? I like my iphone 5 a lot, and I like what Apple is doing, but this might just be too far.

A reported hangup Apple had with NFC was the known security issues, fingerprint scanning could potentially fix that. We mocked NFC as a file transfer solution as Phandroid were hailing it as revolutionary when there were already numerous ways to transfer files. Technically these financial transactions would not require NFC, but it would be the most likely method.

It is a high tech security feature, as it is intended to be. Again, it's value will depend on it's implementation. I don't even know what you mean by "this might be too far".

Well the people I talked to were saying. Who takes Google wallet (androids way of taking NFC money transfer)? Why not just use a card? Do these not apply anymore now that Apple could be bring it to the table?

Not for Apple for the people on this thread. Apple has not even said they are going to have this. Now people went from saying it would unlock the phone to using at to make money transactions over seas.

Have the PCs not tried this before?

I seem to recall Windows OEMs having tried to sell tablets before the iPad came around without much success too. I wouldn't lay poor odds on a technology just because "PC's" had tried it before without a lot of success.

Besides, wouldn't a fingerprint scanner under the glass be innovative, regardless of whether you personally were going to use it or not? And isn't innovation what we've all been saying we want to see more of from Apple recently? Give it a chance and see what the folks at Cupertino can do with something like this...you might be surprised.

You could be right. I have been surprised before by Apple.

Now I think about it, we did hear a lot of that. I think it had more to do with the tiny number of locations in the USA where Google Wallet could even be used. I heard several Phandroids actually blame this on the fact that Apple didn't offer NFC on their devices and as a result it wasn't taking off. Its possible that the iOS fans were wrong back then for dismissing NFC (which I'm not certain is coming on the next device). regardless this has no effect on whether it's a good idea or not. I personally would love being able to make secure payments with my iPhone at a retailer, NFC or not.

It's also been rumored that these transactions would go through your iTunes account, thus not requiring special arrangements made with each card provider and giving Apple total control of it's implementation (and any fee's involved). This would be genius IMHO...if it happens.

And of course, people don't go to Best Buy carrying their PC, so the transaction point would be moot on a non-portable device.

You are right. I just find it funny all these Apple people were saying NFC is crap no need for it. Now man this is going to awesome. I for one loved NFC, and would love to see it on my iphone, but that want be until the iPhone in 2014 cause I am not going to upgrade my iphone 5 for a 5S.

Not 100% NFC is happening. They might go with LE Bluetooth (amazing tech but not being used at most places).

Fanboys (on either side) are being deliberately obtuse and, perhaps worse, near-sighted when they slight a technology introduced on another platform just so they can feel better about not having it themselves. As one who had several Android phones and used Google Wallet several times, it's a neat technology with a lot of potential.

As one who has had their bank account cleaned out after having had their wallet stolen, I also really like the idea of NFC payment systems secured with biometrics.

What is going on here?

So for the first time ever the S model is not going to have additional hardware in the form of a finger print scanner its also going to have NFC? Interesting, the 5S will have absolutely nothing in common with the 5 except the name. New housing, new internals, new hardware, etc.

I'm going to use the Apple fan argument in this thread. We are all always going to be carrying a credit card so why do we need NFC? Its dumb and useless. Are you going to give the waitress your phone to take into the back to run? So why have NFC when you are going to be carrying your card anyway. Blah blah blah NFC is redundant lets all never change anything blah blah blah.

And security for NFC? Psshhh better then a credit card already. How many times do you use your PIN number to use a credit card? Never or at ATM's. you can set NFC apps to require a pin every transaction, plus the pin to unlock the phone to begin with.

However I will say it makes MUCH more sense to me and my use for a fingerprint scanner to do something other then just unlock a phone.

Personally not exist and something else utilize that space, like a larger battery. Because regardless of how small/thin it is on screen it will require hardware on the logic board.

Aside from that I'm not creative enough to think of anything, not that there isn't anything though.

I've had my credit card info hacked twice (thanks Blizzard and Sony). Eventually got most of the money back, but had to go a week each time flat broke. Would love anything that reduces those odds. The second time it happened to me the bastards drove to mexico and back and stopped at every gas station on the way as far as I can tell. They didn't even have my card, but got my number and made their own card. Would have loved it if my fingerprint had been required to approve purchases.

Yea I agree. I want a bigger battery. Not a freakin fingerprint scanner.

This chip wouldn't even effect the size of the battery as the battery doesn't overlap the logic board. It might effect the placement of a larger processors or RAM, but not battery life

Eh, I would argue there is no real NEED for multiple things they added in the past.

Off the top of my head:
Maps with turn by turn? Yeah, we had that.
iRadio? yeah, we have this too

I am sure there are more. I wouldn't say adding a feature is pulling at straws. Frankly, we have no idea IF they are going to implement this let alone HOW. Am I excited for the feature? No. But if they did it right, I very well could be.

The more important point, and I mentioned this on page two, is really, why are people (not necessarily you) so paranoid about this thing. I can almost guarantee it would be OPTIONAL. If you think the evil corporation is going Minority Report on you, just don't use it. I mentioned this about Siri. I don't use it at all (not because of paranoia, but because I think it's utter crap).

This is another thing. People think adding xyz means that there was room that could have been used for a battery. Currently. batteries are basically bricks. Unless we change battery tech drastically and make a battery that can "flow" into all other available space, we aren't sacrificing battery capacity for a new feature.
