I just got mine and it runs far cooler than my 2006 MBPro. That's my experience so far.

The heat and noise has been a complete non-issue for me so far. (15 inch 2.2 GHZ)

These things are all relative and we all have different tolerances, i guess.

just watch steve jobs keynote back to the mac.

I find it hard to believe that people who are so dedicated to the MBP that they post here don't know much about MBAs...but long story short, Steve Jobs said that the Mac Book Air is the future of the notebook when he introduced the major revision this fall--this is what people are referring to. It's a future with integrated storage on flash memory, so that mechanical drives are eliminated, as well as the elimination of optical drives. I don't know how this will work in the MBP, but that's the direction Apple is headed.

I've seen Steve Jobs proclaim the Power Mac G5 as the beginning of a bright future for the PowerPC platform on the Mac and then denounce it exactly two years later when he announced the switch to Intel. The "Back to the Mac" keynote claim that he made could just as easily mean nothing or only apply to the white MacBook. He thinks that one day we'll all be using laptops like that and then months later talks about a post-PC era in which we use tablets like the iPad or iPad 2 instead of a laptop at all and only a week after his company unveils these MacBook Pros, which are nothing like either the iPad or the recent MacBook Air.

The new quadcores are still 35w, but the new MBPs use faster memory and a video chip that runs a good deal hotter (apparently).

No offense, but you are simply wrong. The TDP for the new ones is 45w.

Well, you can bet that SJ was just jive talking, as he is sometimes prone to do...but if you're betting against SSDs and for optical drives, I think you'll be wrong. And Apple has no issues with using non-standard designs that make it difficult/impossible to upgrade without custom parts...I think they kind of love doing it, actually.

Oh, sorry! I was thinking that was called a Facetime camera instead of iSight, so I thought maybe you missed a comma.

Sorry--forgot what the cool kids are calling the camera now. This decade it's a Facetime camera...that's right. ;)

and here we go....

So now its 2012, they do a design refresh:

"OMG! Never buy the first revision."
"My display is cracking!"
"TOO MUCH HEAT!!!"
"OMFG! Cat pooped on the keyboard!"

"Guys wait for the next big thing, I am sure it will be better! No heat issues, the laptop will be perfect!"

Now its 2013, the same chain of events occur!

People! Just buy the goddamn laptop if you need to! If its defective, RETURN IT! Get a new one! Make sure you are satisfied with what you have (you paid a truck load of money for it!)!

/end_rant

Some of us are collecting data, reporting what is known, and making measured assessments.

Others, like solaris7, are acting like ignorant children who whine and cry, presumably because their precarious egos are threatened for some inexplicable reason known only to them.

Posts like this one give Mac message boards a bad reputation as insular, apologist places. This is exactly the place to discuss issues like this one. This should be obvious to everyone, but if you have nothing to contribute but a childish rant designed to pathetically shame people into silence, please don't contribute to the noise. Go to another thread, another website, or get up from your laptop and take a walk around your neighborhood.

On yy 2011 15" 2.2Ghz both fans are running at about 2000rpms on istat. I'm only using the web.

My temps are:

HD 97F
CPU 97
CPU Heatsink 88
Enclosure Base 85
Enclosure Base 2 81
Enclosure Base 3 85
GPU 90
Heatsink B 92

Are those normal temps for just web browsing?

good to know as i'll also be coming from an early 2006 MBP (which now only has one working fan, and right now while just browsing the web, the CPU is in the 70s C, with the fan at 1000 rpm)

So what it comes down to is: If you're worried about getting one of the (from what i gather) very fem new MBP's that do in fact differ in temperature from the 2010 model, and can't be bothered to exchange it if you would, then don't buy the 2011 MBP.

Judging from this thread the chances of getting one of those seems slim, though. Also people tend to be a bit more worried about potential defects when a new computer comes out, hence all the "IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY COMPUTER OMG NOOO!?"-threads.

But if you want the extra performance, and don't mind exchanging it then you're in for a really nice experience with your new computer.

(Typed on a brand new 2011 2.2ghz MBP which stays between 35-38* during light use. Around 45* when playing 1080P HD video, and around 65 when rendering 50 minutes of audio to .wav using ableton.)

I think people usually report these temps in Celsius. If you re-list them that way it would probably help (yes I could convert but it would be easier the other way).

I realize that the post you quoted was out of line. I realize what the numbers say in the specs about the TDP and updated max fan speed. But some of us, myself included, can run our 2011's through the ringers and barely get them warm. My 2011, has not once went more than 3-5 degrees from what my 2010 does, doing identical tasks. The fans never even get audible unless I really peg it, and even then they keep it below 75c in all circumstances. Be it gaming, using Final Cut Studio, massive RAW images, or a combination thereof. The 2010 was top of the line in it's time too. Side by side, they are virtually identical temp-wise, in my case.

For some of us, it's simply a non-issue. I suppose we don't understand where people are getting the issues, just like the people having the issues don't get how we're not, perhaps.

It doesn't make anyone an apologist if they are not experiencing trouble. It doesn't make anyone a terrorist against the holiness of Apple if they have heat issues. In actuality, what gives Mac boards the names they have, are the extreme exaggerations found on either side of a dispute at times, by some people. Be it AG vs. glossy, or temp comparisons, or whatever. Some people won't admit Apple has flaws. Some people won't admit when Apple deserves a little credit.

At any rate, I tire of the bickering back and forth. I'm happy to submit any hard data or proof of the operation of my laptop(s) in hopes that it will help. If anyone wants it just let me know what I can provide. The solution does seem rather cut and dry though. You tried to warn people who might have a problem with the warmth and fan speeds that may be experienced, so that they might avoid dropping money on something they might feel bad about later :) And that intent is a good thing :) I just wanted to throw in my 2 cents that not all the 2011's have issues, apparently, so if one wants it, one can get it, and exchange if need be and there's an issue. But for what it's worth, not all of them are fireballs and it is possible, to get a good, cool running one :) (many people, have :) The silent, happy numbers always far outweigh the troubled users, people need to keep that in mind or we'd all get too terrified to upgrade :p )

Forgive my long winded posts, and sometimes crazy thoughts

iZero, that is all eminently reasonable--and it is very good to know data points for people who can directly compare 2010 and 2011 models, especially if they are seeing very little variance between them.

Like I said :) Any kind of comparisons I can run and show for you guys, please let me know. The 2010 has been passed to my daughter, but when she's not using it for homework or whatever she does instead :p  I am happy to provide any data that I can :) Can get them side by side, and am happy to do so.

Please use Celsius when stating temps. It is the standard when discussing CPU temps.

Sir Yes Sir!

My 15" 2.3Ghz Sandybridge with 256 SSD peaked at 100 °C in Windows using 3D Mark.

I got it to force sleep itself in clamshell mode it got so hot.

Oh and by making this thread you were not whining? Maybe you should take a walk around the neighborhood instead of positing and replying to this topic ad nauseum.

OKTHXBYE
