$600+$600 = $299+phone?

I may have mis-read what you're saying, but where I'm from, $1,200.00 really isn't worth spending on 2 phones inside of 6 months.

Yeah you did. I was saying the iPhone is an iPod touch plus a phone inside of it so it's like buying an iPod touch for 299 and paying an additional amount for the phone functionality (at least thats my mentality). it still sucks nonetheless but whatever, I want the thing lol

I'm not due for an upgrade until June, but I'll be ordering mine for full retail on the 3rd.

The great thing about the whole deal though is that I'll be up for an upgrade around the time the iPhone 5 comes out in summer, which'll subsidize my price then.

Hopefully it'll only end up being $100 out of pocket each time, depending on what I can get for my Droid X now, and my iPhone 4 come summer.

Verizon is ahead of at&t for 4g so i wouldn't count on that
From what I've read it sounds like AT&T is going the same route as T-Mobile for 4G in the short term, by boosting their 3G network with speeds up to 21 Mb/s. I understand it is a relatively simple upgrade from the 3G service they have now. They could easily call this 4G to satisfy user's demands until LTE is ready. Of course this "4G" service is no match for LTE. In the Verizon announcement yesterday they said they considered calling LTE 6G because so many other people were using 4G for inferior technologies.
I don't know much about all this, I am just guessing based on what I have read.

I cannot believe that if Apple releases an iPhone 5 in June that it would be a CDMA version. There is just no way that Apple and Verizon would introduce a new model and then replace it in a matter of a few months. What is more likely as has been mentioned is that a GSM version is released and sometime later, it makes it way to Verizon as an LTE phone - sometime 2012.

I'll be getting one on a one year contract (assuming they still allow that).

I truly don't think that they'll be releasing a new Verizon version this year either. I'll be taking my chances and getting the iPhone 4 in February. And then, 20 months later, I'll be eligible for another upgrade. This is when I'd think Apple would be releasing an LTE capable version for Verizon. Why wait until the summer and be disappointed about not having the iPhone 4 earlier in the year?

I see your point, but I also can't see Apple having 2 separate iPhone releases per year either. I don't think Verizon's iPhone 4 really offers anything new, so I don't see this as the iPhone 5 or 4.5. It's an iPhone 4. Therefore, if Verizon has to wait another 12 months for a "real" upgrade, they'll basically always be 6 months behind AT&T in terms of technology. Or, in other words, Apple will be letting the cellphone industry know what is coming to Verizon 6 months later. Apple doesn't role that way.

Yeah, I agree with you. I definitely think that next year they'll begin releasing for Verizon and AT&T at the same time. My gut is telling me, though, that this summer we'll see a very minor upgrade for the current iPhone 4 ONLY for AT&T (or possibly no upgrade at all. I know that it's expected of Apple to release a new iPhone yearly, but would it be that crazy if they showcased another one of their products at WWDC?)

Someone on this forum pointed out yesterday that the videos that were pulled from YouTube a few days ago showed the redesigned antenna band (which Verizon now has) AND a sim card slot. Obviously, the Verizon iPhone 4 doesn't have that slot, so I'm inclined to believe that the summer update will give AT&T the slightly revised band, and maybe a few spec bumps. (This would also allow Apple, and case manufacturers, to only worry about producing one type of case for the iPhone.

Then, in 2012, an LTE iPhone will be released at the same time for both Verizon and AT&T.

There's a very small part of me that realizes it's possible that Verizon may get an update this summer. But I'd like to believe that both Verizon and Apple wouldn't want to make their millions of new iPhone users that unhappy. Maybe that's just wishful thinking, though.

My guess is that most of the "revisions" in the iPhone 5 this summer will center around iOS 5.0 and not hardware. I suspect that the most significant hardware revision will be an escalation from 32 GB to 64 GB.

There is no doubt that Verizon will get a new phone this summer. Think about this..

June 2011 rolls around....
AT&T
- iPhone 4 - $99
- iPhone 5 - $199 & $299

Verizon
- iPhone 4 $199 and $299

Now just think about that massive ad campaign by AT&T Nah Nah Nah Nah! We have the latest and greatest iPhone and Verizon doesn't.

Or "Why pay $100 more on Verizon for the same phone?"

I really don't think Verizon wants to be 6 months behind on the latest iPhone. Also I don't think Verizon wants to go 1 whole year with out a $99 iPhone option. That is why I think in 4-5 months everyone will get an iPhone 5 so Verizon will now have the same price points as ATT.

I'm a Verizon customer with a Droid 2. I love this device, but, well, it's no iPhone. I will be waiting for the iPhone 5, no matter if it comes out in June or January 2012. Even though the wait will be tough, it will make it easier for me to justify upgrading if it launches next January. I've had this phone for about 6 months now, and upgrading at a year and a half is more justifiable than upgrading at 11 months.

I'll be placing my order for 2 iPhones on February 3rd. I've waited too long and I want this thing now. One for the wife, one for me. She's got her upgrade, but I can't upgrade til October this year. My mother-in-law offered to give me her upgrade. So she'll be ordering the phone with my card, ship it to me, and bam, iPhone. Then I'll be lucky enough to upgrade again when a new one comes out next year. Win Win and Win.

Oh, and I'm coming from a rooted pos Droid 1.

Well, that's perfectly understandable. I would do the same if I was on the first Droid, but the Droid 2 has worked well for me for the time I've had it. Also, I'm only 6 months into a 2-year contract. I can probably get away with taking one of my relative's upgrades when they're eligible, trade them their upgrade for this Droid.

Yea, I offered my Droid to her, but she wants nothing to do with internet on phones. Haha. Yea, the Droid 1 is so slow now for what I want to do on the thing. When I exit a program all the icons on the home screen disappear. Then come back a minute later. iOS blows Android away by far.

The thing that comes to mind. If you don't get a Verizon iPhone in February, it'll be a moot point because they'll be so backlogged you probably won't get one till June. :)

I don't really see a new iPhone on Verizon in June. Makes no sense if you ask me. Perhaps the cycle will be a new AT&T one in the summer and a new Verizon one in the winter.

This is another thing that makes me question the idea that there'll be an update for Verizon in June. If they're still trying to keep the shelves stocked with the Verizon iPhone 4 long after the release (which I think is an enormous possibility), then why would they want to move on to the next version?

I am going along with this theory. Maybe an antenna redesign to align the outer form to the Verizon model. This way case manufacturers can align, and Apple has an excuse for the antenna redesign.

All else will be OS related. Then if you have either AT&T or vzw you just update to the latest OS.

If you're not eligible for an upgrade now and really want it, buy the iPhone, sell your old phone and IF they release a new phone this summer and you're then eligible to get the new version, get it and sell the iPhone you purchased on February 3rd (or 10th). If you keep the phone in good condition, you'll make a least a couple hundred bucks off of it. Maybe a little more. There's always people willing to pay a little less than retail for a phone if they are not wanting a contract, are not eligible for an upgrade or have lost their phone. I've sold EVERY Verizon phone I've EVER owned on craigslist this way.

If they do not release an LTE or newer version on the iPhone this summer, then hold onto to your upgrade credit and use it when they do.

That being said, I am not upgrade eligible and will get the 16GB version, sell my droid and accessories, recoup about $150 that way off the bat. Then see what happens this summer. If there isn't a new version when I am eligible in October, maybe I'll just upgrade to a 32GB version and sell the 16GB. But, I'll probably hold out to see what happens. Maybe Verizon will be on a January refresh date?

Or "Why pay $100 more on Verizon for the same phone?"

Maybe because for some of us, AT&T is not an option. Being an ex-AT&T customer, I can say that I personally cannot deal with the dropped calls in my area. I'm sure many people have great service with AT&T in their area, and I was one of those people too when I lived in Texas. Since I moved years ago, I could not use AT&T and switched to Verizon within a couple months of relocating.

So for me, another $100 for a reliable PHONE service (call me crazy) is worth it. I suppose it is for many others as well considering the amount of subscribers Verizon has.

It has NOTHING to do with simultaneous voice and data, blah, blah, blah. Many of us need to actually make a phone call and would rather be "behind the times" phonewise, spend a bit more and receive a quality service in our areas.

As stated many times in these forums: pick your carrier first! Different areas have different coverage.

I for one think competition is a very good thing!

This actually sounds like it may be the most logical theory I've heard so far. Fits with the recently pulled YouTube video showing sim card slot, wouldn't upset new Verizon iPhone customers, and would realign the form for the cases.

Yes, definitely I have no argument with that. Which is why we have Verizon. However, to the poster who asked "who" would want to pay more for an older phone- some of us have no choice for whatever reason we may have. We have had to choose a carrier based on reliability for us and basically, are bound to their device offerings.

Let me state that I had AT&T in Texas (cingular) for many years before I had even an inkling of an idea that I would be moving west. I've never had an iPhone for that matter as I have been with Verizon for the past 5 years and my wife for 10.

If it was as simple as just switching to AT&T, it'd be done and over a long time ago. We could then be like many of the fashion victims and had an iPhone that can't hold a phone call out here :).

So to ask who would pay X amount for X version of a phone, it all boils down to the carrier you have to use and the devices they have available to their customers.

Competition is a good thing.

I disagree. There is no chance that it takes more than a month for Apple to catch up. If it does, it means AT&T is in the process of imploding.

now! feb 3! why wait? why wait for the iphone 4GS or whatever its going to be called when the iphone 5 is coming?
