I'm waiting for iphone 5 on verizon, then I'll get iphone 6 on att, 7 on verizon, 8 on att etc etc
I couldn't agree more, that's exactly how I feel about this. I'm gonna go ahead and get the current model when I can order it on the 3rd, my line is eligible for an upgrade in 7 days. And if Apple goes ahead and releases an LTE iPhone on Verizon this summer then I can deal with that, I'm in a wifi area most of the time anyway.Im buying one now. Here's my logic:
1) I'm eligible now.
2) I have been waiting for this for a loooong time.
3) No one *really* knows whether a Verizon iPhone 5 will be released this summer. Although my guess is that it will, I'm tired of waiting and I finally have a good reason NOT to wait.
4) Even if they do release the iPhone 5 this summer on Verizon, I anticipate that it will be an incremental update, like the 3G to 3GS. I don't think we'll see LTE until 2012, based on how Apple treated 3G in it's early days. In 2012 I expect iPhone 6 to be a much bigger update, likely including LTE. From what I've read, Verizon's new upgrade policy says you have to wait 20 months. So if I get the iPhone now, I'll be eligible to upgrade October 2012, likely only a few months after the iPhone 6 comes out. If I purchase the (theoretical) incrementally updated iPhone 5 this summer, I wouldn't be eligible for the iPhone 6 until into 2013...at which point you would feel the NEXT iPhone was looming.
As always with tech, you will wait forever if you're always wanting to purchase the latest and greatest. In my case, I'm moving from a non-smartphone to the iPhone 4 - a gigantic upgrade. No sense in waiting any longer.

I would wait till june because im guessing there will be an iphone 5 witch will have tons new features like an RFID chip inside the phone and i forget what its called but u will be able to use ur phone as a credit card. Also it will be on verizons 4g LTE network.
cept its prolly not going to be like that. The iPhone coming this summer will most likely be ATT exclusive and then in 2012 the 4G iPhone will be for Verizon and ATT.
My guess is that most of the "revisions" in the iPhone 5 this summer will center around iOS 5.0 and not hardware. I suspect that the most significant hardware revision will be an escalation from 32 GB to 64 GB.
I disagree. There is no chance that it takes more than a month for Apple to catch up. If it does, it means AT&T is in the process of imploding.
Is there anyway to determine the ETF on your account on VZW's website? I bought my Droid (original) in November, 2009. I'm pretty sure I bought the phone a week or two before they raised the ETF to $350. My account says I'm eligible for an upgrade on 7/11/11 and my contract ends 11/11/11.
What I am considering doing right now is ordering the iPhone on a new line, then paying the ETF to cancel my existing line. I figure this will be about $100-125... cheaper than paying retail for the phone.
I am assuming there will be a Verizon iPhone upgrade in June, but I am hoping it is not compelling enough to make me regret not waiting. My Droid has been acting up the last several weeks, so I don't even know if I can put up with it for another six months.
You should be up for your annual upgrade now. I also got original droid at end of '09 and became eligible for annual upgrade 12 months later.
Great response. I like your logic with the whole waiting for 20 months, and buying it now, will mean an iPhone 6 will be perfect for the next phone, even though its just a few months after the release.Im buying one now. Here's my logic:

From what I understand, Verizon won't allow you to create a new account for 60 days after you cancel a previous account.
Can anyone confirm this?

Ah, I see. I doubt it will be selling strong in May/June. I think everyone is overestimating how much splash the iPhone 4 will make on Verizon.I think you misunderstood what I was saying. If they are still selling like hot cakes even months after the release in February, then I don't think a new one would be brought to the table. Why update when the product is still going strong?
Ah, I see. I doubt it will be selling strong in May/June. I think everyone is overestimating how much splash the iPhone 4 will make on Verizon.
But if it is selling really well? [Shrugs] The iPad is, as far as we know, still selling well, and they're going to announce a new model sometime between February and April 1. I think it's much more likely, however, that the iPhone as a product line will sell much better on Verizon when the iPhone 4 is available for $49-99 and the iPhone 4s is available for $199-$299.
I would predict a splash in February, maybe a 10-day or 2-week delay in shipping from Apple.com for a week or two, but then I suspect it will trickle down quickly. There aren't that many people dying to have a mid-cycle iPhone that didn't already own one through AT&T. This is all just a prelude for iPhone 4s. Verizon probably wants the $99 model more than the $199 and $299 models, given the substantial haircut they're taking on those. (Notice that Verizon's stock actually went down the day the iPhone 4 was officially unveiled because everyone knows this means a substantial cut into 2011's profit margins.)
And, to be honest, I think every iPhone 4 sale on Verizon is just a bonus for Apple. Usually the plants would probably be on reduced production in the November-March window until the next model's production begins. But this year they got to build Verizon iPhones. And going forward, they'll have to build CDMA and GSM models, unless the iPhone 4s is a universal phone (but I doubt it is).
I will add one other possible hardware enhancement for iPhone 4s - NFC. Seems unlikely for now, but we know Apple is interested. And they might want something new in the hardware to make a splash for 2011, since 2012's hardware splash will be its LTE/universal carrier features.
