I'll most likely be buying at retail price on Feb 3 since I can't upgrade til March 2012. I've waited long enough and now February seems TOO long.

In the summer, I think the updates for the verizon iphone will be minor, if at all, so I can get discounted pricing for the LTE(hopefully?) iphone in 2012.

Buying now...

Im buying one now. Here's my logic:

1) I'm eligible now.

2) I have been waiting for this for a loooong time.

3) No one *really* knows whether a Verizon iPhone 5 will be released this summer. Although my guess is that it will, I'm tired of waiting and I finally have a good reason NOT to wait.

4) Even if they do release the iPhone 5 this summer on Verizon, I anticipate that it will be an incremental update, like the 3G to 3GS. I don't think we'll see LTE until 2012, based on how Apple treated 3G in it's early days. In 2012 I expect iPhone 6 to be a much bigger update, likely including LTE. From what I've read, Verizon's new upgrade policy says you have to wait 20 months. So if I get the iPhone now, I'll be eligible to upgrade October 2012, likely only a few months after the iPhone 6 comes out. If I purchase the (theoretical) incrementally updated iPhone 5 this summer, I wouldn't be eligible for the iPhone 6 until into 2013...at which point you would feel the NEXT iPhone was looming.

As always with tech, you will wait forever if you're always wanting to purchase the latest and greatest. In my case, I'm moving from a non-smartphone to the iPhone 4 - a gigantic upgrade. No sense in waiting any longer.

I couldn't agree more, that's exactly how I feel about this. I'm gonna go ahead and get the current model when I can order it on the 3rd, my line is eligible for an upgrade in 7 days. And if Apple goes ahead and releases an LTE iPhone on Verizon this summer then I can deal with that, I'm in a wifi area most of the time anyway.

I'm waiting for iphone 5 on verizon, then I'll get iphone 6 on att, 7 on verizon, 8 on att etc etc

cept its prolly not going to be like that. The iPhone coming this summer will most likely be ATT exclusive and then in 2012 the 4G iPhone will be for Verizon and ATT.

Wait

I would wait till june because im guessing there will be an iphone 5 witch will have tons new features like an RFID chip inside the phone and i forget what its called but u will be able to use ur phone as a credit card. Also it will be on verizons 4g LTE network.

4G will not be this year...

Ding ding!

This year will see Verizon CDMA in February and AT&T GSM at June. Next year will see a hybrid GSM/CDMA/LTE or whatever - all in one phone and a simultaneous release! Count on it :)

My guess is that most of the "revisions" in the iPhone 5 this summer will center around iOS 5.0 and not hardware. I suspect that the most significant hardware revision will be an escalation from 32 GB to 64 GB.

I agree, this or minor upgrades and the "S" model will come out. Faster processor and larger HD. Then, when all the towers are out and ready, 4g will come to either both, or then branch off to the other carriers with 4g for all. This is the only logical thing to do. They still make more money, people will upgrade with the small features that it will have, esp people that are thinking of upgrading bc their time is up... 6 months or so after the small revision, they will then do the big upgrade. What do you guys think?

I disagree. There is no chance that it takes more than a month for Apple to catch up. If it does, it means AT&T is in the process of imploding.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. If they are still selling like hot cakes even months after the release in February, then I don't think a new one would be brought to the table. Why update when the product is still going strong?

I have an annual upgrade available now.

I will buy iphone on the release date. I dont usually hold on to a phone for over 8 months, and iphones have very good resale. In 6-8 months I will probably sell it to get some Tegra2 4G phone when they activate 4g where I live. I am really not loyal to any of the smartphone platforms. Within last year and a half i've used Blackberry, WebOS and Android phones, so iOS would be the next logical platform to use until newer Android or WebOS comes out.

I dont like sitting on an available upgrade, the longer I have the current upgrade, the longer it will be till I get the next one.

Is there anyway to determine the ETF on your account on VZW's website? I bought my Droid (original) in November, 2009. I'm pretty sure I bought the phone a week or two before they raised the ETF to $350. My account says I'm eligible for an upgrade on 7/11/11 and my contract ends 11/11/11.

What I am considering doing right now is ordering the iPhone on a new line, then paying the ETF to cancel my existing line. I figure this will be about $100-125... cheaper than paying retail for the phone.

I am assuming there will be a Verizon iPhone upgrade in June, but I am hoping it is not compelling enough to make me regret not waiting. My Droid has been acting up the last several weeks, so I don't even know if I can put up with it for another six months.

From what I understand, Verizon won't allow you to create a new account for 60 days after you cancel a previous account.

Can anyone confirm this?

New reason to wait may have just arrived, engadget says that ip5 4,1 AT&T and 4,2 verizon were just found in the new iOS beta,... Thoughts?

I'm not sure if I could wait and isn't resale excellent for iPhones ?

You should be up for your annual upgrade now. I also got original droid at end of '09 and became eligible for annual upgrade 12 months later.

I got the Droid Dec 09, and on the verizon my account (upgrade now button) it shows that I am eligible for discount pricing. Usually that pricing is the 2yr new contract price.

I went to the Droid because verizon didn't have the iphone for so long, I gave up. Now I like the Droid and Swype ALOT. I've decided to wait till my contract ends. If an iphone5 pops up during the summer, I might decide to early upgrade. :)

I'll let you early adopters guinea pig it out hahah.

Now. Nothing says there will be a ViP4 refresh, and if there is you can more than likely sell the one bought on 2/10. It will probably be a slight change in the phone if any, like the 3G to 3GS. I think buy now and wait for the 2012 launch as that all most likely be the LTEViP

Have you guys ever heard of the Samsung Glyde? It's a real ****** phone that I got with Verizon when I switched over from ATT.

I went from the iPhone 3G on ATT (Great Phone, **** service) to the Samsung Glyde on Verizon (**** Phone, great service), and I've had the Glyde for almost 2 years now! (April will be 2 years).

So, I am more than willing to get the iPhone 4 for Verizon in February.

Will a newer model come out? Yeah, of course. That's technology for you. You can never keep up with it (unless you're making so much money, that you don't mind spending $200 for a new phone every year).

I'm just gonna get the vPhone 4 on Feb, and then I'll get the vPhone 6 or 7 when it's released.

Besides, 4 is my fav number, so I want it. Hopefully, the facetime works on 3G though. I know it's wishful thinking, but hopefully it does.

Great response. I like your logic with the whole waiting for 20 months, and buying it now, will mean an iPhone 6 will be perfect for the next phone, even though its just a few months after the release.

I've been eligible for an upgrade since December (I was going to get the Droid X, but I decided to wait). I'm glad that I did though. I told myself that if iPhone doesn't come out to verizon this year (as in, no announcement), then I was going to get the Droid X.

Btw, about upgrading. I know that customers who are eligible for an upgrade can get a discount on their phone. I went to Verizon, and they said that I can get a $30 discount off the MSRP of the phone (not the Full Retail price). So, instead of getting the iPhone for $199, it would be $169.

But I do know that with the droids, it's $199, but with a $100 rebate, so technically, you have to pay $299 to get the phone. Is the same thing going to be happening with the iPhone, or would we be able to get it for $199?

Or, would it be a possibility to get the Verizon iPhone from the Apple store, and still get the $30 discount and avoid any rebates?

That would be a shame if true. I'll have to look into that. Don't now if it makes a difference, but I would just trying to add and then cancel one line on a family plan... Not the whole account.

You should be up for your annual upgrade now. I also got original droid at end of '09 and became eligible for annual upgrade 12 months later.

I'm a secondary line on a family share plan. I'm assuming that's why I'm not eligible for an upgrade until July.

Ah, I see. I doubt it will be selling strong in May/June. I think everyone is overestimating how much splash the iPhone 4 will make on Verizon.

But if it is selling really well? [Shrugs] The iPad is, as far as we know, still selling well, and they're going to announce a new model sometime between February and April 1. I think it's much more likely, however, that the iPhone as a product line will sell much better on Verizon when the iPhone 4 is available for $49-99 and the iPhone 4s is available for $199-$299.

I would predict a splash in February, maybe a 10-day or 2-week delay in shipping from Apple.com for a week or two, but then I suspect it will trickle down quickly. There aren't that many people dying to have a mid-cycle iPhone that didn't already own one through AT&T. This is all just a prelude for iPhone 4s. Verizon probably wants the $99 model more than the $199 and $299 models, given the substantial haircut they're taking on those. (Notice that Verizon's stock actually went down the day the iPhone 4 was officially unveiled because everyone knows this means a substantial cut into 2011's profit margins.)

And, to be honest, I think every iPhone 4 sale on Verizon is just a bonus for Apple. Usually the plants would probably be on reduced production in the November-March window until the next model's production begins. But this year they got to build Verizon iPhones. And going forward, they'll have to build CDMA and GSM models, unless the iPhone 4s is a universal phone (but I doubt it is).

I will add one other possible hardware enhancement for iPhone 4s - NFC. Seems unlikely for now, but we know Apple is interested. And they might want something new in the hardware to make a splash for 2011, since 2012's hardware splash will be its LTE/universal carrier features.

Yeah, I do see what you're saying and I agree that it would be beneficial for them to have the 4 for $99 on their network. I just feel like there are too many unknowns right now. I'll be anxious to see how it all unfolds in the next few months.

Would anyone be interested in a poll on this topic? I don't want to create a new thread if it's just going to take up space, but I haven't seen an actual representation on this site of what everyone's plans are. (Buying now with upgrade and selling in June for 4S, buying now and will skip next update, waiting until June to see what Apple has up their sleeves, etc.)

Edit: Went ahead and made the poll. Curious to see what the general consensus is.
