Sounds a lot like Whining about whiners?;)

From my point of view, there is little worse as a consumer than someone telling you that your opinion about an item your interested in purchasing is not important. If this release was a disappointment to some then so be it, and isn't a forum an excellent place to share it?

What I see across many different forums is a disdain for those who disagree with how we view things. Toyota vs. Honda, google vs. apple, pc vs mac, democrat vs republican.

People start new threads, you don't have to participate in them so why should they irritate you?

I should have been more forthcoming with my own opinion in my original post, but I feel like my responses are way too verbose, so i've been trying to trim them up. I suppose I shouldn't.

Anyway, I agree with the premise of the original post. I do think that some people expect way too much at this point. But leaving those outlandish folks aside and talking to the level headed people, I don't think many expectations are that far off. None of it would even be considered innovative.

Personally, I don't care for NFC, but why isn't it there?

Up until iOS7 (which the general public doesn't even have yet), asking for some basic functionality was like trying to get blood from a stone.

Paying $200 (subsidized obviously) for a 16gb phone and adding $100 on top of that for an additional 16gb of storage is ridiculous and the low end storage on an iPhone should start at 32gb at this point.

There are other things that should have been there/should be there and just aren't, but i'll stop there.

So, while I agree that people who are whining about it not being innovative are whining for no good reason, because I don't know of much more i'd like my phone to do. BUT.. as I said previously.. if Apple wants to keep calling themselves an innovative company, they're going to need to keep doing innovative things.

The point is - this is the case across ALL OSes....none are perfect.

I understand people tend to expect more from Apple, but really why should they? Apple has a philosophy and will stick to it until that philosophy doesn't resonate with consumers (i.e. crappy sales).

That hasn't happened.

Apple has never been in the business to pack a buncha tech in there for the sake of it. Efficiency and optimization take a big hit. Android OEMs counter this with more powerful processors, more RAM and other features but that's not Apple's philosophy.

If you watched the Keynote, they made it pretty clear. They want to make the things people do on a regular basis on their phones better.

If you don't agree with that philosophy, you're free to use Android. Which as people CONTINUALLY point out, is a great OS (and it is).

Coming from an Android user I don't see that iPhone 5S as being underwhelming. I'm still not interesting in buying one but the processor bump definitely looks pretty admirable.

Although Apple has said that they won't have any issues with the NSA, they cannot really guarantee that. For all we know the US government could have a databank of all of our finger prints.

I'm merely stating a point of view that is generally not discussed or gets lost in all the whining.

People are free to post whatever they want. I merely decided to start a thread which explains some other ways of looking at it instead of responding in said threads - generally those responses get lost or completely mis-quoted.

For heavens sake if your unhappy LEAVE and don't come back.

If Apple released a 8 core "snapdragon" processor people would complain its not 12 cores.

The sad part is that all the entitled whiners are gonna buy the new iPhone anyway.

From a shareholder perspective, I would think the deal with China Mobile alone is cause enough to expect a nice boom in sales/profitability.

But really, what Wall Street thinks and what Consumers think are two COMPLETELY different things.

are they really that different? do you think that a large amount of firms, that are built on the sole purpose of making money, will sell their stocks early if they expect apple to continue to do well? that doesn't make much sense to me. it seems like they all have made the decision independently that apple is just going to be stagnant with "neutral" growth.

I guess the consumer should just shut up and take whatever options they're given and not voice their wants/needs/concerns?

It's interesting that when I provide a counter viewpoint to the complaining, I'm telling people to "shut up and take whatever options they're given".....

Or perhaps, those who complain could provide some more indepth reasoning behind why they complain? Instead of "BLAH THE IPHONE SUX.....NEED BIGGUR SCREEN!!!"

I'm looking for a little more intelligent conversation.

The iPhone 5S brings three new features:

  1. 64-bit A7 processor
  2. Multi-color flash
  3. Real biometric security

All three of these points are a first in the cellphone industry. How is this not innovative? Sure we'd all like to see more memory and a larger screen as an option or as a permanent feature, but those would certainly not be innovative features.

What does Apple's "growth" matter to a consumer? At this point, expecting the same growth from Apple is absurd anyways....the industry is maturing.

We'll see what those firms are doing when Apple releases an iWatch that sparks a revolution in smart watches.....

Really its all just a game....buy and sell, manipulate the market. Apple announces record sales, stock tanks. Amazon loses money regularly, stock soars.

I think what stockholders/investors look at and what consumers look at are VASTLY different. Consumers just want a phone that works for them. Apple announced features that make the most common uses of a smartphone easier and better. I applaud them.

I think apple is done long term wise, they're going to stagnate like MS, Cook is the Ballmer of apple. the team jobs left behind, no matter how good doesn't compensate for the lack of jobs. The first time jobs left, apple was a junker, this time jobs left behind a ferrari, but without the driver the car ain't gonna win a race.

I admit, when I go to Starbucks and they try to make me add my own cream and sugar to my iced coffee, I ask them to do it for me.

I'm terrible at making coffee

I'm honestly clueless about most other smartphones. I don't compare the iPhone with other phones, I just know what I want out of the phone i'm getting.. but don't most other phones have upgradeable storage with micro SD cards?

Quite a few do yes.

But Apple promotes cloud storage (as do many). And it was only recently that one was able to move APPS to an SD Card. What many use the SD Card for is media - which can be stored and streamed in and from the cloud.

I want 32 GB for APPS. And I can tell you right now, I'm not about to run apps from my SD Card on my GS4.....

But I get some people NEED it and that's cool. As I said, lots of great Android options out there.

And this is what's wrong with these forums.....

Seriously, gtfo.

Agree OP. When I started looking at different Apple forums years ago, including this one, its a yearly come together from those that complain about not getting what they want, and this OP will never end.

So I ignore them, and look at the products, both Android, and iOS phones, and it never fails, that the iphone is the most mature looking, solid built, and has what I want as a phone first with a good OS.

Having a very good security fingerprint sensor this time around is icing on the cake along with a good camera sensor. The upgraded CPU/GPU is nice, but not an over riding factor for me as long as it is smooth, not lagging. Wait until next year when the iphone 6 comes out, and it has some nice features, but lacking in one area or the other, and here we go again. Human nature OP ;)

I agree with you for the most part, but I just feel that to an extent, people have a right to expect more from Apple, because Apple puts themselves on a higher pedestal and talks about being an innovative company.

This whole notion where people who aren't happy with what Apple is or isn't doing are told to go to Android or Windows Phone or Blackberry or wherever else is ridiculous.

I don't get every single thing I want out of an iPhone and if I want more, I have the right to voice that desire. However, if I want to use iOS, what choice do I have, but to purchase the iPhone that has some, but not all of the things that I want?

There isn't anything wrong with wanting more out of the products you're paying a lot of money for.

Some people go about it in a whiney manner and yeah, it can be grating. But if a person is just saying that they would like the iPhone to have these certain features and are disappointed that it doesn't and they're told to get an Android phone if they don't like it, well.. that's pretty ridiculous.

My statement was a general statement in response to what you said. I wasn't trying to imply that you, personally, implied that.

Apologies.

It's easy to lose track of which people are having a legitimate conversation and which people are just saying BLAH THE IPHONE SUX or IF YOU DONT LIKE IT SWITCH TO ANDROID@@!

I love how going against the "Grain" that is apple is considered verboten on this board still. I'm not impressed at all with the iPhone 5S and while there is a 64 Bit process inside of it some of you need to do research as to how this really works.

It is rather ironic though that the typical fanboys on this board are now throwing 64 bit up as a shield and these are the same people who complain about android users always being obsessed with specs.

apple's growth is dependent on the consumer. the firms just do not see much growth in the company if they are rehashing the same ideas. this is the reason you brought up the iwatch. it is a completely different product. IF the product comes out, i'm sure the firms will re-adjust their outlook but for now, with the current product line and the introductions of the new iphone 5s/5c, they do not seem to be too impressed.

yes, the stock market is a big ponzi scheme but it sure makes a lot of people money. especially folks that get paid in stock options like apple execs. i'm sure they pay attention to see how their announcements are taken. if the opposite happened and the stock jumped up 6%, apple lovers would be using that as a talking point. now that the opposite has happened, it is debased as unimportant.

I think it's also a lack of understanding how the two companies (Apple and Google) work and design their OSes.....

Android is open - meaning if you and your buddies want to be able to hook up your phone to a TV screen and bluetooth a PS3 controller to play emulator games, you can make it happen - regardless of the fact a VERY SMALL minority of people actually care about being able to do that very specific task.

Apple on the other hand has created a CLOSED system. Security, quality of apps and a polish and optimization level above the rest are pros for this philosophy. Because Apple ultimately controls the end functions of the device, there are obscure tasks that can't be done. But the smartphone functions a MAJORITY of people use are polished and work more efficiently and reliably than any other smartphone out there. That's the appeal.

Android has come a long way. There are many extremely polished Android handsets out there, but for me there's still something about the simplicity and elegance of the iPhone and iOS that draws me to it. Being able to torrent movies or bluetooth a PS3 controller mean nothing to me. If they did, I'd be firmly in the Android camp.

And this is what ultimately confuses me. If these things Android can do, mean that much to you (general "you", not specifically "you"), WHY DO YOU USE AN IPHONE AND COMPLAIN?

WHY. NOT. USE. ANDROID?

THAT is where this whole complaining thing breaks down and ultimately becomes trolling....

We'll see what happens when sales numbers are released.....

From a consumer perspective, if the phone does the things you do on a smartphone, better than the previous version, you're happy. At least, I am. What some investor thinks about AAPL makes ZERO difference to me.

And ultimately, stocks ebb and flow. AAPL has been up and down over the last 2 years and yet Apple's cash stock STILL grows. Each iPhone is more popular than the one before it.

Overall, I think that the 5 to 5S upgrade hasn't been as disappointing as the 4 to 4S was. I don't think that the 4S would've done as well had it not been released so close to the sad passing of Steve Jobs.

And here come generalizations and assumptions - I get it. They are much easier than a reasoned argument. Much simpler to call someone a fanboy than actually discuss the points made.

There is no SHIELD being thrown up. No declaration that 64-bit is an innovation or should be ooed and ahhed at.

The point = There is a clear double standard that exists. My posts serve to expose such a double standard. Clearly I'm on the right track when people can't come up with any counter other than "Typical fanboy stuff, thinking Apple is perfect".

The speed bump is nice. Not the point though. A mobile 64-but processor represents a move to more robust applications on smartphones. A device is only as good as the applications and experience one can have. This marks a shift to "desktop-like" applications being developed for smartphones.

I'm not even calling this an innovation. Simply asking, why is this "nothing" and gimmicks put out by other companies HUGE INNOVATIONS?

Assume at your own risk.

iPhone 5 "S"ame:mad: Huge disappointment. I have ZERO interest to upgrade from my iPhone 5. This launch has Tim Cook brand all over it: Risk adversity, lack of innovation, short minded,…..

Thanks for playing - nice of you to come here and prove my point.

NEXT!

Could not agree more.

People fall into Samsung trap of comparing useless specs and highlight useless gimmicks that noone uses.

All those "cool" features are turned off within a week of using the phone. I know people who own S4 and turned that off after a week of excitement as they drain battery like crazy and cause the phone to exert more heat.

Apple focuses on useful feature, avoiding releasing something that little to no value to customer.

Turned what off? Like people don't turn off features on the iPhone?

I totally agree with you. This (S) update was pretty predictable and was a pretty solid jump in my opinion.

I saw the news reporting that Apple stock was dropping 5% today and it reminds me of this thread. IT ALWAYS drops after a product release but then goes back up.

Anyone who follows Apple products and the stock knows both of these things happen.

So you think a doubling of performance in CPU and GPU is nothing more than the throwing around of specs? Grow a brain.

I'm just saying when samsung announced the S4 with the quad and octo core processors lots of people on this forum mentioned that "Android users" were throwing around specs.

But because its the iPhone its some type of sacred lamb and should be treated differently. I use both android and iOS so i don't have exclusive loyalty to either platform.

But the double standards that occur on this board are laughable.

Next year if iPhone 6 has NFC on it. You guys will be singing hosannas about it in the street but yet the general attitude on this board seems to be that since its not on the iPhone that its crap and passbook is the way to go.

The predictability shouldn't affect how we feel about the update itself.

I agree with you.

For an (S) update, I'm actually pleasantly surprised on how nice an update it really is. Seems like a lot of hardware and software went into it.
