If the original poster had posted his review on the MacBook Pro forum, I'm pretty sure you would have gotten your preferred responses. It would have been, cool, glad you like your new 14" MacBook Pro and then the thread would have faded into obscurity. Instead he posted his MacBook Pro review in the MacBook Air forum where now it has 5 pages of responses which is likely why he posted it here instead of there.

I have just discovered a reason why I might get an MBP over and an MBA next time.

M1 MBA won't mount two Thunderbolt drives at same time on battery power.

I don't know that an MBP would either, but at least with an MBP it wouldn't need to be on battery. With only the two ports on the M1MBA there is no option.

Maybe M2 MBA does not have this limitation.

(it is still possible my MBA is faulty).

Well, this is kind of an extreme situation. I remember my old 12" Macbook choking even with one regular 2.5" hard drive, now that was embarassing.
With the M2 Air, you could plug in the MagSafe and be fine, I guess.
With the M1 Air, you could search for some kind of self-powered hub, but I'm not that savvy about Thunderbolt accessories.

Yes forgot M2Air has MagSafe as well as two TB ports, so would have that option.

Yes it is extreme, prob why it hasn't arisen before in nearly two years. I'm still a bit surprised.

Would be interesting to know which MacBook models do support two TB drives on battery.

The speakers and display contrast alone would have been enough to sway me if I hadn't already bought a 14" MBP before the M2 MBA's launch.

The extra ports are handy, too.

What about battery life? The MBP14 lasts around 10hrs with light usage and the Air lasts about 14hrs (Based on my MBA M2 and my friend's 14). The MBA can last all day without charging.
The pro is for pro users who need the power and ports. They plug in all the time and do heavy work.
So everything depends on the user. Whether they are pro or not
ex photo edit need a SD slot and better screen, video edit need a larger(multiple) screens and better performance

The only thing I miss on the MBA is promotion but I have to sacrifice for other advantages

The minute someone starts a thread saying they like a particular product and it meets all their needs, out come all the haters telling them they're wrong.

Imagine being satisfied with something, posting on a forum explaining why you are satisfied, and everyone going "well that's cool man, for me it wouldn't necessarily tick all my boxes, but I'm sure glad it does for you." Sound like a fantasy? It sure is.

The reason is that so many of those people posting about why the MacBook Pros are so amazing computers, don't value what some of us consider the MacBook Air's raison d'être, lightweight and small.

To me it's liking hearing people talking about how great an American truck is, when all I want is a small, compact European/Japanese/Korean car.

Never buying anything again without pro motion

If there was a way to LOCK pro motion on, so it is always 120, I might be tempted. But it doesn't work that way—it's variable depending on your needs. Because of that, to my eyes (which are admittedly middle aged) it's not that different.

But like I said, if there was a way to make it always do 120, maybe only when it has power—that I would be interested in.

If MBP is a truck then so too is MBA. MBA is lightweight but it's not small in size.

Screen is way way better, more power, better cooling, faster SSDs, better speakers and more ports is a lot of things for only a small difference in price. I think a 16/512 retails for around $1700 usd, while I picked up my 14 MBP for $1850.

An extra 350 g isn't as much of a difference as I would have hoped for. If the MBA was closer to 1 kg it would be much more appealing.

worth it just for smooth scrolling

while i would never buy a computer just for 'smooth scrolling'... the scrolling on my M2 air is smooth as could be; what more is essential? it's just scrolling...

Essential? An “essential” MacBook would be the M1 MBA. It has the essentials. Anything more than the M1 MBA is luxury. That includes the M2 MBA.

Problem is, the M2 MBA weighs like an American truck too, if the MacBook Pro is a truck.

Not true. The MBP line is actually what a “normal laptop” is. The M1 MBA is more like an iPad in terms of limitations. A real laptop has more “essentials”.

Best Buy has a base MBP 14” for $1599 at the moment

Not true. The M1 MBA doesn’t have the ports of a MBP, doesn’t have the external display support of a MBP and the bluetooth also sucks in comparison to a MBP.

The MBP line is actually what a “normal laptop” is.

I do have a 14inch M1 Pro. I don’t feel like it’s barebones at all. It has the things I like and appreciate. But if an everyday, non-pro and non-geek wants to get the most valuable machine, the M1 MBA fits the description.

Same with my M1 12.9 iPad Pro. In casual usage it is fine, and I do use it alot when i am outside. But a laptop should cover more in terms of “essentials”.

am assuming this is a joke? OSes don't stop happening just because someone is happy on *pick a mac OS*; same with hardware. otherwise, we might all still be using 'toilet-seat' ibooks.

maybe you own an M1 air and are happy. i'm happy with my M2 air. and, in a year, someone else will be raving about their M3 air; yet it won't de-value mine (or yours).

just saying something doesn't make it a valid statement.

It is a valid statement because you are at the mercy of external dongles with basic external equipment. The MBP isn’t perfect in this regard, but atleast they made improvements here.

Saying the MBA has all the essentials, while you having to use dongles is not correct.

In regards to your post #141, you did use the term “essential”. At this point of time, the M1 MBA is considered as a product with basic functions and meets daily requirements by average users. Im saying this while keeping the price in mind.

If you’re happy with your M2 MBA and that you don’t care for ProMotion, I can respect that. I’m just baffled by the idea of people thinking M2 MBA is an “essential” or “bang for buck” product. Objectively, it’s not.

I’ve a M1 Pro MBP by the way. It’s no where near essential but I like what is has to offer.
