“ The only man who never makes a mistake is the man who never does anything. Which is why Apple does so well chucking out rehashed versions of its old products” So said Theodore Roosevelt all those years ago! How uncannily accurate was that! And was it not also Lincoln who claimed “Never believe anything you read on the internet”.

They need to AirPower this.

Bring it back in a year's time once it's been properly redesigned.
its literally impossible to make airpower. Laws of Physics are prohibiting it. Heat and Interference is gonna evolve no matter what. Unless Apple invests in Graphene just to make a damn charger

Say what you want about Samsung... at least they are innovating.... what’s Apple doing besides adding a freaking camera lenses

It’s no way I’m upgrading from my mid spec XS Max this year

And how do you know what Apple are working on behind closed doors? Folding phones aren't yet ready for primetime and certainly couldn't be manufactured in the quantities Apple would need. Not that they'd put out a product like the Fold to just proclaim that they were first and to say look at how innovative we are. Samsung is all show, they like to grab headlines but most of their offerings don't seem to gain the traction they would like in the end.

And through Samsung’s ups and downs.... Apple is becoming the Honda Civic of the smartphone world.... and no that’s not a compliment

They invented it. Innovation is when everyday consumers get to use a feature to its fullest potential. Innovation doesn’t mean new features or buggy underdeveloped gimmick that looks cool to you.

Adding 3rd camera is useful to make good AR possible. Making portrait mode better. Its cool no, new no. But its innovation yes and apple is late to this one.

Adding a bendable screen is cool yes. Innovation- No. No consumer is going to buy a foldable underpowered. Low specs Phone for 2000$ and isn’t samsung all about having headphone jack, expandable storage and repairs which the fold is complete opposite of. Ffs ipad Mini has 5000mAh battery more than samsung’s fold and not to mention beast of a chip.

Well, I can think of other reasons. Like, iFixit never got a Galaxy Fold to do a teardown on. They got it from someone else that had received a pre-production unit from Samsung for review and test, not teardown. The pre-production units might not be ready for primetime (duh) so, I fully understand that Samsung does not want that online.
The release date was today.

Seriously, how likely do you think it is that these models were significantly different?

That’s grasping at straws, mate.

Well let's see. iFixit was never supposed to have the device, they got it from a supplier who was not supposed to give it out basically violating their contract. Samsung asked that reviewers not take the device apart so iFixit was no exception. Tearing this thing apart is like giving a competitor a blueprint to a device that was not yet released to the market. Samsung needs to protect it's unreleased product, I'm sure they have no issue with iFixit buying one and tearing it down.
People saying Samsung is trying to pretend the device never existed don't make sense because you can still go watch the positive reviews and the negative ones about it breaking. With all that said it all came down to basically showing the internals (basically blueprints) off of an unreleased device. Any company including Apple would be upset about that. But of course it's the Striesand effect and Samsung is trying to somehow hide a device that you can still find all over the internet.

Well Apple did file patents for folding screens back in 2016 - maybe they tested it and decided it's a junk idea. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should - at least until there's a point to it anyway (and it worked properly)

I still don't understand how the testing process works in those companies (Samsung, Apple). Just put those devices into pockets of the employees and analyze the results after few months. Everything new device is just so secret they can't even test it in real life... and here are the consequences.

The thing is, how do you cram years of simulated use into such a short space of time needed to get the product to market before anyone else? How do you know that an item would be pretty much guaranteed to break after 6 months' continuous use if it's only subjected to 3 month's-worth due to time constraints? I don't know how accelerated it's possible to reasonably achieve real-world usage tests, but as devices are getting more and more complicated, rushing these items to market is becoming more of a problem, so it seems.

And that would make Samsung phones....the Pinto and the Yugo? Nah, those were both too cheap. We need a car that was both crappy and dangerous, yet expensive....

Got it! 2010 Ferrari 458 Italia!

It's amazing how iFixit can actually identify some serious on those electronic devices. I think these companies should start sending devices for them to analyze it or maybe they just intentionally design to break easily like MacBook display cable.

I wouldn't say they junked the idea, they'd have to wait until they can buy the screen tech from Samsung since they can't make it themselves. So Samsung would have to make the display/form factor work first in order for Apple to bring this to the market. If Samsung can make it work they can sell some themselves but it'll also be good for their screen biz as other companies will come calling for the screens. So Apple is just waiting around.

Don't get trying and succeeding mixed up. I could TRY and build a time machine but if I don't succeed then there is no innovation.
If you built a time machine and it partially worked it would be considered a breakthrough and you'd be considered a success, no one would say you failed, you'd just need to continue to work on it until it was 100%. Samsung didn't fail they just need to refine their product and make it work right.

They seed review units to select reviewers, the same way Apple does. I assume this means they handpick the people they want to review the machines. iFixIt is not one of those entities. Not shocking Samsung asked them to take it down.

What do you think Apple would do if The Verge or CNET or whoever gave iFixit an iPhone unit they were reviewing before release? I'm surprised people are surprised or that this is even a story.

I like iFixit---they had no business even having this machine.

That's utter nonsense. The flexible OLED screen has existed for years - people have been just trying to figure out how to make it work within a product and what to do with it. There are multiple small sized OLED screen makers. You're also getting the product division of Samsung mixed up with the manufacturing division. The manufacturing division has the tooling to make OLED screens at mass quantity for people like Apple, to whatever specs Apple comes up with - it has nothing to do with what the product arm of Samsung are doing in terms of releases and design. For all intents and purposes they are totally separately companies owned by the same publicly traded company.

By partially work you mean you travel back/forward in time but your legs are missing? Yeah somehow I don't think that would be considered a breakthrough.

I hope they do succeed eventually it will open up a sci-fi style future if they can get over the hurdles.
As long as plastic is involved it's not going to happen.

Are we gonna sit here and pretend that all the Apple lawsuits about the various (insertgate) the iPhone has had over the years we’re not a thing

Again.... At least Samsung is trying
Worst excuse ever. Every company is trying something.

The funny part is, that no one thought it vital to inform reviewers not to remove the plastic "protector".
Not to mention it was sufficient to just pocket the thing for a day or two for lint and debris to kill the screen.
This has had to be tested in white gloves in a controlled atmosphere behind an airtight door.
