As you can see from the pictures in this very article, Apple goes way beyond what other companies do in terms of industrial design and clean internal structures. These three products are basically the same generation, yet Apple crams more functionality into a smaller space and still makes it look good inside and out.
Can you elaborate on your use of the term same generation?
Also, did Tile actually opt to go industrial design?

I can see the Air Tag being very useful for tracking luggages. While some airlines give RFID tags to place in a luggage, only they can track the whereabouts, not the owner and if the luggage happens to be mistakenly picked up by a wrong person, only an Air Tag can tell its whereabouts.

Also, I don't see an advantage to place the Air Tags on the outside of a luggage or a bag where it is vulnerable to being detached by physical means. Put it inside, make it safe and inconspicuous.

The post I replied to speaks of things getting "smaller and thinner" over time.
The trackers in this comparison are all offered right now, making them competing products at the same time. It also stands to reason that AirTags have been sitting on the shelf at Apple for some time, so the argument that they are the newest product and therefore most advanced is not entirely true.

The term "industrial design" applies to look and function of every product, the question is more how much was Tile willing to spend on it's design. Apple certainly does, and that results in setting the bar higher for competing products. That was the original claim, Apple not settling for ugly ass bolted together stuff like the Compaq PC in the post above.

Yep, people will always do weird things for attention. There was another guy few years ago who implemented his own functional 3.5mm headphone jack in an iPhone that did lack it.
For attention, or to add functionality?

Thanks for that.
I know what industrial design means, the question is regardless of how much they spent, was Industrial Design one of the briefs for the Tile product? If not then that comparison moves towards being irrelevant surely?
As for being different generations I think even being from the same time can see significant differences in product performance, the latest AMD products are from the same time as a lot of their peers but if you look at their previous 'generation', the difference is huge.

For attention certainly, at least to some degree. To show off (and be it just to yourself) that you can do this.

You don't spend hours and probably quite some money on such a project, risking warranty and bricking your device, just to add functionality that you could add with an adaptor, which is most likely cheaper and quite unobtrusive.

So Apple is responsible for how small and thin everything is? Or more likely, that's just the march of technology over time. EVERYTHING got smaller and thinner.
Another thing that Apple doesn't quite get nearly enough recognition is how they get people to rethink that is truly necessary in a product. We see this in the ruthless excision of ports from their devices (which was oft-ridiculed, but allowed for thinner and lighter devices, as well as pioneer other forms of technology). You only get so far with the design of your product if you are too afraid to remove "key" features for fear of being criticised or boycotted.

Very true.
Apple is not afraid of being criticised for removing what they think are legacy features or unneeded bulk. And criticised and ridiculed they are, quite heavily, until the competition does the same thing after a (short) while.

Washington is on the quarter, not Jefferson.

It's sad to me how underrated Apple's design and engineering are. The company is constantly criticized for "costs more, does less" and "overpriced" and "outdated." But looking at the x-rays comparing the different tracking devices, it's immediately obvious how much more thought went into designing AirTags than the products that came before it. The other two look pedestrian, and the internal components are just placed wherever. In the AirTag, the layout of everything inside has been deliberately placed so that no space is wasted, and there's a beautiful symmetry to everything.
Well said. Another example would be the new iMac — how thin and beautifully engineered it is — and yet you hear complaints about the bezel color, the “chin”, and the lack of a logo on the front. Little appreciation for what went into designing this machine.

Apple designs its products with the future in mind. They don't see physical wallets lasting long in the future. I'd be surprised if they released a card version later on.

Apple can design whatever the frig they like

As long as I have a legal obligation to continue to carry around my drivers license, health card, insurance papers. I will require having a wallet.

Apple is completely irrelevant if they think just because they THINK we shouldn't carry a wallet, we're going to stop. There are legal / regulatory reasons why most people still carry one.

These work perfect in my wallet 🤷🏻‍♂️
I just shoved it in one of my wallet compartments. No issues.
You can easily fit one in a normal wallet, unless you use something like a Ridge wallet.

Too thick for mine. I have a slim minimalist wallet. it is NOT easier to fit into a wallet unless you're already used to carrying around a somewhat thicker wallet.

Its not even a ridgewallet or hard walet. it's a soft one. but it's a single folder that can hold about 4 cards and 1 piece of ID.

I only carry it because I legally have to carry around my drivers license, health card and insurance.

Trust me. the moment I no longer have a reason to carry a wallet, I'm not. I'm fully on board the digital wallet hype train. regional governments are just not their yet. until then. people need a wallet of some sort. and these are too thick to fit into any that are not already "thick".

sure, I could "FIT" it into my wallet. But that would add thickness to it that I'm not prepared to do.

If I disable the speaker, do I get to track an android user with impunity?
I think they should make it possible on iOS and Android to open an app and immediately show what AirTags are close to you. That way someone in a vulnerable situation (someone in an abusive relationship or with other security concerns) could quickly tell if someone's put a tracker on them, versus just having to wait whatever unspecified amount of time until it starts notifying you on its own.

I don’t need people passing by to be able to tell I have something valuable tagged in my possession, thanks.

This used to be me yearsa ago.

then I realized

1. Why am I carrying around a giant whack of receipts in my wallet for no reason.

2. Why do I need to carry around cash? At least where I live, tap+pin has been in every single store for 20 years at least. Heck even gas stations air-pumps accept tap. with digital payments via apple pay it's just been that much easier to go cash free.

3. Why carry around a dozen credit cards? I carry 1 physical card in case of failure of my phone. other than that. everything else is now in Apple Wallet.

I still see a lot of people with these massive wallet bulges and it's beyond me why people still insist on carrying around 5lb weight in their pocket. so yeah, SURE they can "easily" fit an Apple Tag in these monstrosities. But anyone whose minimalist and trying not to break their backs carrying around these wallets will not fit the Apple Tag eaisly.

it's just too thich.

Absolutely. I keep a single $20 bill for emergencies, a credit card, health insurance card, the RFID card i need to get into my office, and an ATM card. I’d love to get rid of some of those cards, but i find i still need them from time-to-time.

Same. I had literally every ATM and credit card receipt from the previous six months for some reason. A couple years ago I switched over to using a single money clip to bundle about five cards together and kept my cash separately.

and yeah, I still totally carry around cash. It’s great for tipping delivery people directly (without funneling their money through some unknown platform which may or may not make it to them) and it’s great for quick local transactions. As a matter fact, a lot of small stores near me have started offering a discount for paying in cash because they don’t get charged for a percentage off the top as they do with credit cards.

Yea I hate carrying a wallet as well. I’d love my ID, debit and credit card and a little cash and I’m set

In Japan, average people typically carry ~30-50,000 yen in their wallets. Japan is still a very heavily cash driven economy, and many of my friends in Japan have something approaching the classic Constanza wallets, plus a separate coin wallet.

The Porter folding wallet I carry holds all my cards, cash, and it’s less than 1/2” thick. It sits comfortably in a front pocket. The Airtag completely disappears in there.

How about to a full degree?
It's always difficult to say what drives a person to do things.

When I built my own drone, it was definitely to prove to myself that I could do it.
It ended up to be a lot of work, it did fly, but it cost way more and could do less than a commercial alternative.
So did I do it for attention? To prove myself? Just for fun?

Just because the final result is presented somewhere and gets attention does not mean that this was the only reason.
