the new imac mini

very convincing images; however there are fine discrepencies when looked at closely. Obviously, everyone noticed the "centRE" not "centER" but if you look even closer at the images of the actual unit with the box lid open...look at the white color of the unit itself, then look at the color around the part that says "iHome" and has the logo - two different colors. Looks like a piece of paper that was probably taped to the top of the imac mini to me...but that's just my guess. I work with Photoshop and digital cameras quite a bit, so I know what color a piece of paper goes to...more on the yellow / tan side, especially when no flash is used for the picture. Just my two cents worth though. However, the design of the box was cleverly designed - it is possible it was a mock-up at an earlier stage before they decided on the imac mini as the final product name. Most new products will go through rounds of mock-ups just to see how the packaging will impact the consumer.

"before they decided on the imac mini as the final product name."

It's NOT iMac mini! New Mac is called Mac mini

What do you think of MacOSRumors "iPod Home" story?

http://www.macosrumors.com/20050115.php

If the system was basically an iPod photo (using airport to sync) plus satellite radio, for under your TV, would you like it?

Personally, if it plays movies and can stream movies and audio from my Mac (including remote controlling what I'm watching)... then I'd be quite happy. (edit: though the rumour says audio only)

Wow, you own the only iHome ever "manufactured"! That is sweet!

I just went to the eBay link, for about $2 I was gonna buy it for kicks....but then I though nope...It said 0 bids so I guess you did the buy-it-now, or the page is messed up.

iHome, hah!

:D

the symbol's on the left hand ports appear to be on top, while the right they are on the bottom.

where's the power? seriously doubt it's powered by firewire.

This is the stuff we all live for

I wish they did a better job with this fake, because I LOVE hoping this stuff is real going into a Macworld, but this one just looked too lame.

port alignment, etc.

While this did, at first, have me convinced, looking more closely at the machine revealed another fact not mentioned before.

Recently, the port alignment scheme has been following these rules:
1. If and only the machine is a laptop, all ports are horizontally aligned.
2. If the machine is a desktop and an imaginary box around the ports is horizontal, USB and Firewire ports will be vertical. Other ports will be horizontal. (Exception: iMac G5 modem and ethernet)
3. If the machine is a desktop and an imaginary box around the ports is vertical, all ports will be horizontal. (Exception: G5 front USB and Firewire)
The "iHome" doesn't fit these rules.

Video connector looks like a mini-DVI (used on small powerbooks, G5 iMac, etc.). This requires an extra dongle to use video. That is not the user-friendly, Macintosh Way.

The styrofoam on the computers is always sandwich-style (one on top, one below). The "iHome"'s packaging is not Macintosh Way-compliant.

erm, dont americans spell 'centre' like 'center'?

odd..?

/asif

while yes, americans do spell centre "center", the same company will use the different spellings depending on where the product is meant to be sold. even apple does this. so i took the liberty of selecting the same web page, just from three different countries, Australia, UK and USA. to see the difference, i looked for a page on the apple site that said center/centre and i found it on the xsan page. on the panel near the top where it says "tech specs" etc, there's a button that says "data center" now, check that with sites from the USA, Australia and the UK:

http://www.apple.com/xsan
http://www.apple.com.au/xsan
http://www.apple.com/uk/xsan

not only do they spell it differently, but i'm sure that they would spell it differently on the actual product. as for the iHome product, perhaps it's just a photo from a different country version.

Please!!! It is fake! It has been confirmed that it is a cardboard box, and it has been sold on Ebay. The real product is the Mac mini, not the iHome.
