IKEA's New 'Symfonisk' Sonos Speakers With AirPlay 2 Now Available for Purchase

I feel like they missed the obvious by not putting a USB charging port on the bookshelf speaker. All the marketing images show using it as a night stand next to you bed. Adding a USB charging port for your phone if you’re using it as a night stand seems so obvious.

Agree. I want to like it, but it looks like it would go best with a coffee table made from cinder blocks. And a half-eaten pizza in a box (tomorrow morning's breakfast!) on top of it.

I disagree. This isn’t a lamp you use as a main lamp to light a room. The glass is heavily frosted which restricts the light output. This is the kind of lamp you put on a small table in a dark corner if a room, only now it serves as a speaker too.

I'm assuming you can use the SONOS app on any platform (Apple, Android, Windows, etc.) to play music to this, in addition to using Airplay 2?

That’s correct.

That really holds me back. I'll wait for Apple's next move on HomePod. I love my HomePod in the living room but it's way too powerful for a bedroom. I'd love something like a BeatsPill portable HomePod or a GoogleHome mini type Siri speaker. I want to be able to talk to Siri anywhere in my home but HomePod is a bit of overkill both in sound and price.

Agreed - would love to have something like a HomePod mini. I ended up buying a bunch of last-years iPads and some used ones to have Siri in every room. Works fine, and through Siri shortcuts you can still mimic room-specific voice commands (e.g. saying “lights off” instead of “lights off in the bedroom”)

Really... I've had a HomePod for about a year and a half. And every Apple Music request has been faithfully executed, at least 95% of the time. And that's from distances up to 20 feet away, with music in play.

Hardly dumb as a rock.

Try asking it a question. While Alexa and Google Home will at least try to answer it, Siri on the HomePod keeps saying “I can’t answer that on HomePod”. If I ask the same question on my iPad, it’s not a problem.

What’s also lacking on the HomePod is third-party integration, like news apps etc. Apple News only works in the US and the UK

That's a really lame product demo(video). Looks like the switch is ready to break off too.

Thought the same thing. In reality, it’s pretty well built.

No voice assistant on these is the one major downside. Otherwise they’re a good addition to the Sonos ecosystem.

I might add them to my setup somewhere![/QUOTE

To me no voice control is a major plus. Why should a device constantly listen to me? I don’t get the fascination with voice assistants.

But what happend to the Home Pod? I have been waiting for them for two years here in Sweden. Now I will start to use Sonos instead.

Just order one online from another state. I have three of them and they’re not available in Switzerland either. Other than the voice assistant, they’re not better than a sonos though.

Is the lamp portion HomeKit compatible?

It’s just a socket. Put any HomeKit capable bulb in and you’re good to go. I added a Philips Hue bulb and it works like a charm.

Looks better in person - it’s much smaller in reality than what it seems like in the ads.

It’s not the greatest designer lamp ever, but it’s inoffensive.

The Sonos ecosystem spreads like cancer. Why would anybody spend so much on speakers that are so horribly locked in? There is no reason for this high amount of lock-down other than vendor-bondage.

wait, cancer is like Sonos?

That wins today's "Daftest Statement on an Internet forum" award.

The proportions aren't right. Perhaps if they added a toaster in place of the light...

Looks interesting. I'll have to go by Ikea and see if there is a demo available for both speakers so I can hear how it sounds and for that price it is reasonable.

Yes, IKEA does have a demo set up with both the speaker and the lamp.

No the lamp is not HomeKit capable.

Both are larger than I thought they would be from the pictures. I was hoping that they would be smaller so I could place them in more inconspicuous locations.

Mounted horizontally, the bookshelf speak really does make a good sized shelf.

Installing g them as a stereo pair later today.

I plan to buy 2 of those as surround speakers in the living room, with my existing Soundbar.
Quality should be enough to be used for that, and it's just 200€.

Even if these sound mediocre, you can set up the bookshelf ones to be an actual shelf, and 90% of what I play over the speakers at home is podcasts anyway. The problem is that right now, I have to plug my phone into a wire to do it, so if I'm in another part of the apartment and I want to change tracks, I have to walk back over. I had my setup include my AirPort express for a while, and being able to play audio through that was amazing, but I had to abandon that—not enough power sockets in that area. :/

Did you try any other task? Did you ever try Google Assistant? There’s no comparison. Not even close.

The brand lost me when they went from IKEA sans to Verdana.

I wonder how many of these will be returned because the sound was so bad. As bad as Verdana.

I'm not interested at all in other tasks and have no need for a "smart" speaker to answer questions.

Siri is the ideal UI to engage HomePod and Apple Music, and work incredibly well together. It's a well-designed system. I'd guess they (HomePod & Siri) get used around four hours a day here.

So these sound terrible or what?
Most reviews are saying the sounds is close to a Sonos One, which is quite good for the cost. If I didn't already have a pair of Play 1s as surrounds for my Sonos Beam, I would definitely be looking at the bookshelf speakers considering the price.

The bookshelf speakers sound awful. I saw them at an IKEA store today - was there for a different reason.
Hmmm... interesting. Most reviews are saying that the sound is similar to (although not quite as good as) the Sonos One. Can you elaborate on your Ikea experience? Maybe Ikea was playing something awful or the EQ was messed up?

Why does a "smart" speaker/light need to have that huge hideous eye sore of a knob on the side? Maybe its just me....but cant I just ask the assistant to turn the light on? Or at least have a physical button on the plate looking thing it sits on....
