No, thanks.

I'll stick with my iLife '08+iMovie HD solution instead. Apple's gotten many things right with looking forward (early adoption/centering around USB vs legacy ports etc.), but this time I'm not seeing the draw. Oh well. Then again, I'm still a fan of Quicktime 7 Pro, so go figure ;)

Any news about iWork? Does Apple usually updates both iWork and iLife at the same time?

The only iLife app I am interested in is iPhoto, so much potential but with such serious performance issues...

Exactly how are people going to install Apple software like Aperture or Final Cut? Or re-install the OS?

It would be cheaper for Apple to distribute OSX on SD cards. An 8GB card holds Snow Leopard and costs less to include than an optical drive. Takes up much less room and is quicker to boot from, too.

My macbook doesn't have an SD card slot.

I swear to God, I hope iDVD isn't gone completely but more integrated into iMovie or something along those lines. iDVD is one of my favorite applications in the iLife suite.

The 64-bit rewrite thing is pretty awesome though. Hopefully iTunes will be a part of that (doubt it though).

I really want iDVD to stick around (just like I'd like DVD studio Pro to get some more lovin') but I wonder if Apple may be making a general interactive export app.

Basically, an application that can not only export to DVD, but also an intractive Quicktime file, or a small self contained mac/iOS app, or (to iWeb (HTML5/CSS3/Javascript)
I don't know, I doubt that would happen but it would still be pretty awesome.

+1 QT 7 Pro (hopefully Quicktime X will get there someday)

They could start shipping software and OS images for new machines on USB keys.
I don't know if it will be that soon, but the optical drive is definitely starting to look a bit outdated now

An application from iLife '11 has already been released. It's called iTunes 10. It's not 64-bit.

I'd like to see a lot more weight put into iPhoto.

With the steep price declines in DSLRs, proliferation of smart phones with better cameras, etc. people are taking more photos than ever before. The result is that the photo management and editing tools that only pros used to need are needed and by more and more hobbyists and casual photographers. If they could pull in some tools from Aperture and more robust photoshop-like tools (layers, dodge and burn, spot healing brush, etc.?) it would make a lot of people happy.

As for the current feature set, it would be nice to see more powerful facial recognition (profiles, better job with babies and children).

I'd also like to see some tighter integration with Mail since family email photos all the time. Rather than just be able to right click and add the shot to iPhoto, how about the ability to create an event, label faces all in Mail and then add to iPhoto.

One of my biggest gripes though iPhoto's lack of integration with AppleTV. If I take movies on my camera or even my iPhone, it syncs to iPhoto but only the photos will sync with AppleTV. The only way to watch these movies is to render them in iMovie, Handbrake or another similar program and then add them to iTunes. What a pain!!!

Amen brother! I love iPhoto for organizing imports, but it's sooo far behind Lightroom when it comes to making your pictures really pop. I don't see Aperture as the answer here, it's too heavy to work with compared to Lightroom.
iMovie needs to be to movies what iPhoto is for pictures since more and more devices are capable of recording video. Easy importing, organizing and easy editing.

certainly a placeholder text.
reading the gibberish translation, I first thought it was simply a bad machine translation. the german original as seen on amazon is not much better though.

iDVD has to be part of iMovie now. There's no reason to just ditch a great app like that.

What?

iTunes have never been a part of the iLife suite and it have absolutely nothing to do with iLife except for media browser type of deals.

So I'd have to have an external CD drive to play all my games, install my software, go through my backups and import my new music into iTunes?

Personally, I seldom use my CD-DVD drive, so, a portable USB drive to keep in my backpack would be fine. What I would really like is two drive bays, one for SSD and one for a high-capacity HDD.

Agreed about facial recognition. It is just good enough to be tempting to use, but, not good enough to really automate the process-- very frustrating. It works OK with certain people, especially people over 40, but, not well at all with children.

64 bit

64 bit iPhoto and iWeb are pretty much a sure thing but wouldn't count on a 64 bit iMovie just yet. Apple still hasn't truly potted QuickTime to 64 bit. The 64 bit API that they have is pretty weak and even then most of the real work happens on a separate 32 bit thread. I would be shocked if we saw 64 bit video editing apps from apple before 10.7

I also believe the optical drive is pretty much dead...I haven't used one for about 2 or 3 years, all the software/music/etc. i buy is downloaded directly to de hard drive, and stored/backed up in other hdd, usb, sd, etc.

Apple already took the first step with the Macbook Air and provided solutions for the lack of the optical drive, it is obvious to think that in the very near future computers will be opticaldriveless to make room for other stuff in their guts and that can only be good

So I'd have to have an external CD drive to play all my games, install my software, go through my backups and import my new music into iTunes?

Oh dear Apple, for the love of god, do not even attempt to axe the CD drive. Please.

I don't think they've had a CD drive nor has anyone distributed anything on CD for 10 years.

The phrase you're looking for is DVD. Get into the 90s!

That app already exists, it's called Encore and it's from Adobe. Export as flash or DVD or Blu-Ray, etc. And yes, Apple should make a uniform multimedia app that destroys it. It's my only guess as to why they've let all their multimedia languish like DVDSP. Why bother when you're working on a DVDSP killer, right?

I specifically mentioned Final Cut since all the installation files takes up something like 40 gigs - kinda big don’t you think?

80GB External drives are being sold for 30-40$ at most. I’m sure they can offer it next to the 10 DVDs package or something that’s offered for Final Cut for 40$ more. Far easier and faster to install from an external drive than 10 DVDs. A lot of huge packages are starting to come in the external drives instead of 10 DVDs.

Yeah, but those DVDs will be around fifteen years from now when, presumably, you still want to use the software you dropped $1200 on. Show me a hard drive that will do such a thing, and you've got me sold. Until then, especially for professional apps costing significant sums, DVDs are going to be the standard.

I have a 40GB that still works from a decade ago. You are not supposed to use hard drive for other purposes than just installation and copying files. Hard drives can last just as long as DVDs. It’s far easier to scratch a dvd than to scratch the platter in the hard drives. You can also simply back up the hard drive to another hard drive or have the company send you a replacement for a fee just as you can with DVDs. It’s also far easier to back up the hard drives than to back up the 10 DVDs. Put them on read-only flash, it’ll last practically for a century if not longer.

NO WAY iTunes will be part of the 64-bit rewrite if it happens to iLife. That would have happened with iTunes 10 if it was going to happen!

Agreed. The transition to 64-bit is long overdue and iDVD is a great application.

And if iDVD really is "going away," then I really hope it's merging into iMovie.

I agree about iDVD. I use it more than iMovie. A 64-bit re-write is certainly tempting, but not at the expense of one of my favorite applications. Apple hopefully has something even better to replace it.

I can see iDVD disappearing. That's not to say that the product isn't useful to people who still use DVDs, but if Apple isn't going down the Bluray road, then what can they really do to improve it? My prediction is that next year optical drives will start to disappear from Macs and will simply be an external option.

iDVD will not merge into iMovie. It will get the axe. They will do what they did with iMovie HD and have it available for download on apple.com for a while and then it will be gone for good unless you can copy it from somebody.

I wish they would push more toward iTunes Extras and build something in iLife to let us create those for our movies instead! Physical media is dying, Apple is not going to invest in it anymore.

Have you heard of a computer called the MacBook Air?

Is it too soon to hope that iWeb will be html5?

That would be cool! I hope they beef it up a lot so you can do some decent creation and not just templates. The ability to do web apps would be cool too! :)

It would be really cool if they bring iLife to iOS. Although, it already has iMovie... The Photos app is pretty much iPhoto, especially now that it has faces, places, and events, but it just doesn't have the editing and effects that iPhoto does... iDVD will get the axe, and obviously has no place or purpose on iOS... iWeb could work on iOS... GarageBand could also work on iOS... So it will be exciting to see if they do this. I have thought for a long time, even from the beginning of the iPhone that they should have had iLife on the platform to differentiate it from the copycats like they did with the Mac. I hate to say it, but it seems like Apple isn't quite as far ahead as they use to be in everything. Luckily they still have a far superior overall experience and design!
