I’m using the iLive that came bundled with the wife’s ’10 MBP, as soon as I updated to Mavericks (this morning), iPhoto and iMovie both came up with free updates vs. showing $xx.xx when I was still on ML.

What OS are you running?

Mavericks. I am being offered the iWork downgrades for free, but not iLife.

Hmm, I’m trying to remember the exact order of events and versions. Based on the release date of iLife ’11 I’m not 100% sure whether her bundled/disc version was ’09 or ’11.

FWIW, our upgrades went something like this (don’t know if this is helpful or not...):

13” MBP purchase new in ’10, packaged with iLife, OSX SL
15” MBP purchased used, no iLife, installed from 13” copy, OSX L
13” and 15” both connected to my wife’s (and the 13”) AppleID for purposes of app purchases
Both machines updated to ML roughly 4-5 days availability
Both machines showing $14.95 upgrade for iPhoto and iMovie
Both machines updated to Mavs (10.9), both show upgrades for free

iLife originated from a disc install via an Apple pack-in, updated for free through Mavericks.

Good luck!

Good luck!

Thanks, I'm probably going to need it. It would be helpful to know whether your install disc for iLife was '09 or '11. I am quite confused by reports that some with '09 installed were being offered upgrades, and others, such as myself, are not.

Microsoft has already said they are moving to annual updates.

Moving, not moved.

And we don't know how often there will be a pay-for release, or how much it will cost if there is one every 3, 5, or so forth years.

Is this really a good thing?

What right do you have to complain about anything now? Less then you did before, because now everything is free. Removed features in iWork? Hey, it's free now. Buggy GM release for OS X? Hey, it didn't cost you anything.

I paid a lot for the hardware. And since this is the only OS that runs smoothly on this hardware, free or not, it better be smooth.

Doesn't mean that people will update Windows.

Most people don't bother upgrading their OS with the exception of security patches (many don't even do that). Look at the numbers still using Windows XP a 2001 vintage OS.

OS X users are the exception with a high proportion of users who were willing to pay for the update (even back in the early days when it was not a cheap thing to do). The free update should catch many of those who were unwilling to pay to update before.

I braved the server/gear closet :D Found the original iLife disc that was bundled with the wife’s machine (same one I used), and it is 11. So all other things equal, that seems to be why we updated and you can’t (at least, at the moment).

This just seems like it's going to open the flood gates for even more of the same rubbish we've been subjected to recently, but now Apple can point at you and say "It's free, what more do you want?".

But some people will always find something to complain about. I'm sure you must be very familiar with that.

Thanks for checking. The situation is ever so slightly less murky.

Indeed. And so many things broke after mavericks that were fine before that it's more like a beta version than actual working software. And these so-called free apps are more like the free apps that then require you to pay for the content to make them viable. It's only going to get worse.

I see, yeh that isn't so good. At least you have the option to keep what you had until they fix it (like they did with FCPX). By sticking with the old version you are still in front of MS office right?
That is the one thing they did right with the new iWork version: at least it doesn't replace the previous version!

Really hoping for a "pro" version of Keynote somewhere along the line. Triple bonus points if they create a free Windows-based viewer app for it, so I can finally stop using Powerpoint forever.
