"We wanted all of our customers to have access to our very latest software so they can get the best features," said Oppenheimer. "We wanted to make it a part of the experience."

In plain english that means: "And we want you ****ing finally use our iCloud services! Get hooked! And start paying Big Bucks for that!"

I can't wait to see how the next version of Aperture turns out, especially after they dumbed down the other 2 "pro" software offerings they have.

This is reminding me of Apple from the early 2000's. Bac when .mac was free, OS X 10.1 being released free, and other nice features.

Wish it was really free. Owners of iLife apps before '11 are still being charged for upgrades, a week after this was supposed to have been fixed.

I just got a reply from apple. They confirmed only ilife'11 owners are qualified. Id like to have the iPhoto upgraded since iPhoto 09 doesn't sync with iCloud. I don't know why apple makes such exclusion since now they are basically giving all the non professional software for free.

Free "OS X" updates, but this is 10.9 so surely the next update is likely to be OS XI is it not

No, they said they changed the naming structure to something they could "Use for OS X for the next decade". Not for the OS, for OS X. So unless they lied at WWDC, they're sticking with OS X for the next decade.

If you own a Windows machine for 4 to 5 years then you are likely to upgrade Windows 2 to 3 times. Those upgrade can run $100 each.

If you bought a Windows box when Windows 7 came out in 2009, you would have paid $40 for Windows 8 when it was released, and that's 4-5 years of OS upgrades for $40. Assuming you're using hardware from 2006 when Vista came out, that's still under $200 for a Windows 7 and Windows 8 license.

3 updates in 5 years?

So you buy your computers about a year before the OS refresh, right? Oh, and this isn't really apples to apples, because you can be two versions behind and you'll still get patch tuesday every month. Microsoft supports their OS with 5 years mainstream and 5 more years security fixes. A person generally needs to be within a version number to reliably get updates.

10.7.5 came out a year ago, for example.

Look, I will be one of the firsts to say that a MBA is worth every penny, but let's not lie about why it is.

Apple is expensive because of the following;

Engineering - What other company goes into so much detail about every part, even on the inside where a consumer can't see?

Design - Apple designs their products to be thin and light, and still be usable.

Material - Aluminum. It's more expensive than plastic, puts up with more abuse, and looks nicer.

Quality - For the most part, the quality of parts used is much greater. While I can't back it up with facts - too lazy to look - I'm sure the quantity of failure is much less than that of Dell and HP.

Software - While the software may not be as powerful, it sure has a great UI and UX.

Support - Apple support is something that no one else can really beat. You get free diagnostics, even after your warranty expired. You get a basic 90 days of phone support and 1 year warranty that can be done in store, or mail-in. And 99% of the time, I never had an issue with Apple support or understanding their techs.

These are the components that make the price of an Apple product more expensive.

I don't know why you posted that to me. I said that I perfectly agree that my MBA is worth EVERY PENNY of what I paid for it.

Do you mean iWork or iLife? Did Apple ever say versions of iLife before '11 would be eligible for a free upgrade? I have both '08 and '09, and neither one works for me. I'd still have to pay to upgrade. On a related note, I can't even get them to run on Mavericks.

iWork '09 (I was shocked when I remembered that this was, in fact, still the latest version), however, upgraded flawlessly.

Not necessarily a good sign for the company, but I think it's the right decision. Gotta promote your stuff.

Sticking with iWork '09 until they fix that junk.

After you upgrade your iWork, you should be able to go to finder - applications - iWork09 and find your old iWork 09 still there.

I think why iWork is free and it is kinda LITE is apple wants to integrate the OS X, ios and icloud together. Rather than put the OS X version at a far advanced stage compare to other platform they put all at the same baseline. This could eliminate the sharing incompatibility.

Maybe that's why they keep the iWork 09 on your drive instead of overwriting it.

whoops, I hit the quote button by mistake. Sorry! :D

Oh, okay. I was really confused there. I really like my MacBook. It's my favorite laptop I've ever owned, and I even had a RoG laptop for a while with a dedicated graphics card... that got about 2 hours of battery life.

Charge double for hardware , and give software for free . Most people will download softwares illegally for free . So it won't make difference for Apple :)

Lol nope. The majority of people only upgrade OS when they buy a new PC. Which is perfectly fine when Microsoft support their legacy software for much longer than Apple.

Legacy Support is pretty good on a Mac. I believe Apple is still supporting Macs from 07 with this latest release. Also the latest versions of iTunes is still available to even OLDER Macs that are on Snow Leopard.

I live in Holland, so my system language is Dutch. I had the same problem, till someone told me to change it to english and.. The updates appeared:D. Then I changed back and all was well.

Is your system language not english? Try changing it anyway it worked for me somehow

English. I've tried every suggestion, but nothing works.

No, they aren't.

Yes, they are. We can't seem to come to any consensus about whether an owner of iLife '09 is even entitled to an upgrade, and I assure you that I am not being offered any of the iLife apps for free.

And Microsoft is supporting any computer that can run XP until next year. Vista will be supported for three years after that. A person could, technically, be using a computer today (likely updated RAM and video card, maybe upgraded to an SSD) from 2004 or 2005. Anything that can run Vista will be good until 2017, just think about that.

Then they are begging for a class action lawsuit. The PR for this program did not make any such distinctions. I decided to take the Mavericks plunge (from Snow Leopard) because Apple said I'd be entitled to upgrade my iWork and iLife at no charge.

When announced, they just said iWork and iLife, without reference to versions.

I did get the "upgrade" to iWork, but since it's actually a downgrade, I won't be downloading them.

I agree that they have certainly improved with support for their hardware, but for software it is still not anywhere near as close as Microsoft. Windows XP was released the same year as the first OS X. XP finishes extended support April next year whereas OS X 10.0 was ditched ages ago, the latest with extended support being 10.6 released in 2009. Apple have a habit ditching their older software as soon as they possibly can. With the release of Mavericks I imagine 10.6 and 10.7 will soon probably be dropped from extended support.

Its crazy my iMac G4 can't run the latest iTunes, but my older XP box can. But yes, legacy support off Apple has improved. I can only hope it will get better.

No, highly unlikely. The number after the point is a program version number not a decimal number so it can be anything.
Anyway, OS X has become a brand name now rather than version 10. We tend to talk about OS X 10.9, not OS 10.9.

I'm not saying you are doing anything dishonest, but this is what would be called an "exploit" in gaming. Apple did not intend to give you this for free; you just found a flaw in their license system.

is this like the "loophole" Apple uses for taxation?

not to start anything. I just read what you wrote and thought about how many on here either like/dislike Apple taxation/earnings procedures. Maybe Apple saves $ and now offer updates for Free...and some people save $ and are able to buy a new Mac/iOS device sooner.

I'm happy they have the FREE software. hoping the New Aperture coming "soon" rocks and is NOT a downgrade.
