"We wanted all of our customers to have access to our very latest software so they can get the best features," said Oppenheimer. "We wanted to make it a part of the experience."
Aperture is free too... if you know how. (Hint find a trial download, then look in the App Store)
I'm not saying you are doing anything dishonest, but this is what would be called an "exploit" in gaming. Apple did not intend to give you this for free; you just found a flaw in their license system.
Wish it was really free. Owners of iLife apps before '11 are still being charged for upgrades, a week after this was supposed to have been fixed.
Free "OS X" updates, but this is 10.9 so surely the next update is likely to be OS XI is it not
If you own a Windows machine for 4 to 5 years then you are likely to upgrade Windows 2 to 3 times. Those upgrade can run $100 each.
3 updates in 5 years?
So you buy your computers about a year before the OS refresh, right? Oh, and this isn't really apples to apples, because you can be two versions behind and you'll still get patch tuesday every month. Microsoft supports their OS with 5 years mainstream and 5 more years security fixes. A person generally needs to be within a version number to reliably get updates.
10.7.5 came out a year ago, for example.
Look, I will be one of the firsts to say that a MBA is worth every penny, but let's not lie about why it is.
Apple is expensive because of the following;
Engineering - What other company goes into so much detail about every part, even on the inside where a consumer can't see?
Design - Apple designs their products to be thin and light, and still be usable.
Material - Aluminum. It's more expensive than plastic, puts up with more abuse, and looks nicer.
Quality - For the most part, the quality of parts used is much greater. While I can't back it up with facts - too lazy to look - I'm sure the quantity of failure is much less than that of Dell and HP.
Software - While the software may not be as powerful, it sure has a great UI and UX.
Support - Apple support is something that no one else can really beat. You get free diagnostics, even after your warranty expired. You get a basic 90 days of phone support and 1 year warranty that can be done in store, or mail-in. And 99% of the time, I never had an issue with Apple support or understanding their techs.
These are the components that make the price of an Apple product more expensive.

I don't know why you posted that to me.I said that I perfectly agree that my MBA is worth EVERY PENNY of what I paid for it.
Not necessarily a good sign for the company, but I think it's the right decision. Gotta promote your stuff.

Sticking with iWork '09 until they fix that junk.
whoops, I hit the quote button by mistake. Sorry!![]()
Overall, a Mac is cheaper than a Windows machine. If you own a Windows machine for 4 to 5 years then you are likely to upgrade Windows 2 to 3 times.
Lol nope. The majority of people only upgrade OS when they buy a new PC. Which is perfectly fine when Microsoft support their legacy software for much longer than Apple.
I live in Holland, so my system language is Dutch. I had the same problem, till someone told me to change it to english and.. The updates appeared. Then I changed back and all was well.
Is your system language not english? Try changing it anyway it worked for me somehow
No, they aren't.
Legacy Support is pretty good on a Mac. I believe Apple is still supporting Macs from 07 with this latest release. Also the latest versions of iTunes is still available to even OLDER Macs that are on Snow Leopard.
I just got a reply from apple. They confirmed only ilife'11 owners are qualified. Id like to have the iPhoto upgraded since iPhoto 09 doesn't sync with iCloud. I don't know why apple makes such exclusion since now they are basically giving all the non professional software for free.
Do you mean iWork or iLife? Did Apple ever say versions of iLife before '11 would be eligible for a free upgrade? I have both '08 and '09, and neither one works for me. I'd still have to pay to upgrade. On a related note, I can't even get them to run on Mavericks.
iWork '09 (I was shocked when I remembered that this was, in fact, still the latest version), however, upgraded flawlessly.

I agree that they have certainly improved with support for their hardware, but for software it is still not anywhere near as close as Microsoft. Windows XP was released the same year as the first OS X. XP finishes extended support April next year whereas OS X 10.0 was ditched ages ago, the latest with extended support being 10.6 released in 2009. Apple have a habit ditching their older software as soon as they possibly can. With the release of Mavericks I imagine 10.6 and 10.7 will soon probably be dropped from extended support.Legacy Support is pretty good on a Mac. No, highly unlikely. The number after the point is a program version number not a decimal number so it can be anything.Free "OS X" updates, but this is 10.9 so surely the next update is likely to be OS XI is it not
