Just out of frustration, let me share that I cannot afford a new mac.

I'm a teacher, and I use a 10 years old macbook pro in a daily basis, from preparing lessons to book designing. This old mac is getting old and slow, but I have kids now and my income is tied to the family budget. To buy a new mac just doesn't fit into it.

Oh, and I live in a top ten GDP country, I wonder how difficult is to buy a mac for a teacher in other places.

Apple is making millions in profits every year. Yet their computers keep the same expensive price tag they always had. At some point I'd like to see Apple considering their clients as people, not as milking cows.

Sorry for the rant.

You can get a new 2016 MacBook for $799 right now which is extremely reasonable. It will be amazing compared to your 2010 model.

I have never seen something like this. A guy rants on a forum about MacBook prices, and gets eaten by community.

There is a very good reason why "rest of the technological world" considers Apple users as idiots. You are not helping with alleviating those stereotypes.

Perhaps the OP would be better served "ranting" to Apple executives directly in California rather than here. Or the other side of the coin is if you are sympathetic to his cause, you could send him some PayPal $$$ and help the fella out....

What happened to the OP?

Probably can’t afford internet. That’s getting expensive these days as well

Actually I probably would if I trusted the legitimacy of those “Go Fund Me” things and that there was a way to guarantee the use of the money. But I keep reading about scams with those things, which is a turn off :(

Though I do remember the days of having a 2nd phone line for the modem, *and* the cost of the Earthlink dialup service...

To consider that a little more than 20 years later I'm paying less, in total, for gigabit fiber service.

Naah, I hear you. It was a joke. Used to pay a fortune (almost literally) for dial-up and local long distance because there was no local access line. Not that long ago

Presumably the point of a rant is just to get it out there. Perhaps the OP cares not at all about our reactions.

It is telling that this rant has produced so much pro- and anti-Apple sentiments though. It really says something about the state of the MBPs when you get so much pushback against Apple even on a fan site.

I am just not getting all the car references. Some people do work where job’s are best served by a Mac because that’s what is used in their job environment.

Nobody needs a BMW or Ferrari for their job environment unless you happen to work for BMW Mottorad or race for Ferrari.

There has to be a better analogy than car brands with models ranging into the 100’s of thousands?

Well I would counter with the following:

1) Most jobs best served with a MacBook would either get a MacBook provided or have it subsidised. As a teacher, at the minimum they would get educational discount

2) OP said it’s too expensive - which model? The brand new Touch Bar ones? The 2018 ones? Basically, there are tonnes of affordable MacBooks everywhere, it’s the requirement of the latest and greatest which can be compared to wanting a Ferrari.

As a teacher, the irony is even a 2014 model would serve them perfectly fine. So many MacBooks can be got for sub £1000, near the £500 mark which function perfectly well.

It’s comparable to Ferrari’s because it isn’t a need or requirement to have the expensive models, I refuse to believe OP wouldn’t be fine with one half the price that is available (heck add more discount for refurb/used). It’s just they want the shiny toy for cheaper. I say this as someone who is quite critical of Apple too!

Apple's gross margin has been broadly stable for the last ten years - the products are more expensive but they're more expensive to develop and make.

The MacBook Pros did have a fairly substantial price hike with the introduction of the 2016 machines. The closest thing to a mainstream Mac is the MacBook Air and that's not been updated in years. Hopefully a sub 1k MacBook will be announced this year.

If OP is going to use hostile language like Apple treats us as cows to milk, then he's going to get hostility back.

Apple has margins in the high 30's, which seems perfectly reasonable to me for a higher end computer brand that doesn't slog cheap crap.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Thank you. I have never laughed as much as after reading this post.
