I'm left handed, and I always felt the iPhone was designed for right handed people. There is no doubt in my mind about that. Right handed people use there left hand when using the phone. Look at most right handed people and how they hold any phone. They hold their phones in their left hand. In fact, most smart phones are designed for right handed people that way. Just look at the 360 view of the SG4. Volume rocker on left side, with power button on right. Perfect for holding in left hand. Again, built for right handed people to use.

Also, just did some digging: Ive is left handed.

Ive didn't design all the previous iPhones, which have the same overall design as the 5/5s. In fact, he kept the same design going. He didn't change it. Boom. Theory just sunk.

I'm pretty sure he was involved with the design of the original iPhone.

I'm right handed, but for some reason, I use my phone with left hand a lot. It feels natural for me.:)

As a lefty, I'd have to disagree. I'm constantly activating the left (go back) slide gesture in iOS7 while I'm touching things in that area, because as a left-handed person my touches often angle towards the right. I also often accidentally touch the Cancel/Back button in a navigation stack while I'm typing fast with my left hand, and lose all my typing.

So righties are convinced the iPhone was designed for lefties and lefties are convinced the iPhone was designed for righties.

I suppose the grass is greener on the other side.

99% of things are made for righties. I'm a lefty, so if the iPhone was designed for us then all I have to say is stop your whining and welcome to my world. ;)

Apple themselves demonstrated that the iPhone works best when held in the left hand, when they made their "common sense" advertisement, showing the natural sweep of a thumb. A LEFT thumb :)

Also, the placement of the Back buttons at the upper left, is geared towards using the left thumb. No doubt that's the reason they used a left hand in this particular ad.

(Only half joking.)

It was designed for use with both hands. I use my 4S with both hands, pass it back and forth, so I can do stuff with my right hand, adjust volume with my left, etc.

Uh, no, we hold it in our left hand so we can use our dominant hand to type and touch things.

In other words, you're correct. It IS designed to be held in the left hand. But that's proof that it's made for righties. You got the reasoning right but the conclusion wrong.

Quite right. Although there are probably a disproportionate number of lefties working at Apple, the phone was designed to accommodate the far greater number of right-handed users. You will see something similar when you visit a guitar shop.

I am a lefty and agree with you. I hold the phone in my right hand and push buttons with my left hand. The volume button is very difficult to use while being held in the right hand. Just like a desk phone, hold in right hand , so left hand is free to pick up a pen and take notes.

It might all have something to do with the age of the user. People in their twenties grew up holding these small gadgets and are very adept with their thumbs.

I too have held every phone with my left hand, although I am right handed. It's sorta like a guitar, you think a right handed guitar would be hard for the left hand.

When I text I use both my thumbs. Call left hand, volume left hand , on and off index of left hand.

What sorta fascinates me though is a lot of right handers use their right ear for listening to calls, whereas that feels totally unnatural to me, so I always use my left ear.

i'm so confused (although i'm a lefty, so i tend to always be confused :p)

i feel equally comfortable using the phone in my left or right hand. i think i actually use it right handed more often (the only reason i am even conscious of this is because i keep it in my right pocket). and i'm REALLY left handed. the iphone is probably the only thing where i don't feel a strong handedness preference (you don't want to hear my sob stories about finding a nice mouse).

the home button is equally easy in either hand. the screen on/off switch is about as easy to reach with either index finger. the volume buttons i can see as being slightly more left thumb friendly, but i'd probably say those are the controls i use least frequently, and the shift in hand position to hit them is so quick its become unconscious muscle memory.

either way, this thread taught me that jony and obama are fellow southpaws, so i'm pleased to know that we are slowly taking over.

That makes no sense as the iPhone is symmetrical. It's all in the different method of holding it that makes it easier.

But here we are, two pages later, and people still don't realize this... and they get mad when they are called iSheep...

Thats more or less it. Using it with one hand or both hands factors in largely. For two handed use a righty would typically hold it in the left and use the dominant right to do things on the phone. For single handed use a righty would typically hold it in the right hand use that hand for what needs to be some. For lefties typically the opposite would apply. The phone itself generally works just as well for eighties or lefties either way they hold it.

I am so confused as to why people still use both hands on this teeny tiny iphone ... anyways I am right-handed and always hold it in my right hand because my right hand thumb is much better in typing stuff and yes I want to use my iphone single-handed ... i have very long fingers :p

As for the OP, i think you need the buttons like LG G2 .. at the back .. right bang in the middle so all kinds of people are satisfied ... oh no wait then people will complain that their fingers cant reach them ...

Do you buy cars based on your handedness (if thats a word) ?!?
