I have never used a screen protector. Never had a problem with scratching. I have however gotten scratches on the other parts of the phones.

a grit of sand is all it takes.

Yeah---I always have it in a zip up folio style case when I'm not using it. So there's a silicon case on the back, and then the whole thing is secured inside another case. I also always try to wash my hands before using it and my kids are allowed nowhere near it unless they are supervised and have clean hands.

Same here.

Yesterday, I asked an Apple Store employee where the iPad screen protectors are located. They don't sell any and he didn't recommend using one at all.

I have an iPhone 3, iPhone 4 and iPad. Never put screen protector on any of them and there're no scratches whatsoever.

I keep a screen protector on my iPhone just because I'm a girl and I throw it everywhere, purse, bags, pockets etc.

With my iPad I have the smart cover and that's it. Love not having a screen protector on it and I feel like the cover keeps the screen protected when it needs it. I also store it in a zipped sleeve when in my bag with the sync cable and the smart cover is more than enough to protect it from scratches.

It's very freeing not to have a screen protector. I hate buying them.

I need more of these kinds of comments to make me feel better. Keep 'em comin'. I already feel exposed without a screen protector on my iPad for an hour. And that's with it in a zipped up hard case.

My iPhone 4 is the first phone I haven't put a screen protector on. I now have a slight half inch scratch in then lower right corner of the screen. Hardly noticeable, but it's there.

Edit: But for my iPad I only use the smart cover.

I have never used something to protect my first generation iPhone (3 years old now) as I think it's perfectly hard and well designed for that end. Screen has virtually no scratches, aluminum back does and the silver bezel now looks like brushed metal, but hey, some devices even look kinda cool with signs of use. This is totally the case.

My point is, I rather enjoy an unprotected device 'right out of the box', aware of the fact that it may fall and break eventually, than using plastic stuff that won't even allow me to feel the device as it was designed.

I hope I made myself clear. Apologies for my poor english.
Cheers from Chile!

I've never used a screen protector on my iDevices. I have one little scratch on my current iPhone 4 - I drunkenly put it in the same pocket with my keys- I hardly notice it.

Haven't found a case yet, that I like for my iPad - but I will buy something, but not a screen protector.

Yeah, but I feel like that's a little different. I have a Belkin Grip Vue on my iPhone 4 and a PERFECTLY installed screen protector. I also use port and headphone plugs to protect from water. My iPhone 4 is sealed tight because it ends up in my backpack or pants pocket a lot, and I sometimes have to walk through the elements to get to work. My iPad, on the other hand, will never go into a pants pocket. The screen is still sealed off from the outside world unless I'm using it.

It would kill me to get a scratch on my iPad 2 screen, but I think I'm going to risk it. I'll probably really regret it later.

Got my iPad for Christmas & put a screen protector on it the next day. It stayed on it for about a day before I took it off and threw it away.

I would put a screen protector on any device that someone with a diamond ring uses.

One careless backhand across the screen with the ring and you have a scratch.

Metal and non-diamond rings really are not a problem.

I've only ever had one iPhone screen crack on me, and I've tended to about 15 total. It was the very first iPhone in 2007. I dropped it from about 3.5 feet onto asphalt the very first night I bought it. Apple exchanged it for me the next day.

I've never had any problems with cracking screens or scratching since and have never used a screen protector. Ever.

Well, a LOT of people in this thread and in random places in other threads have said they have never had problems with going without a protector. I am nervous to do this, but I'm going to give it a shot. I just think it doesn't need it as bas as an iPhone does, and it makes the iPad look like crap.

I have been using touch devices for over a decade. Have been using screen protectors since the beginning. The new glass they are now using looks great and is pretty durable. But one scratch would completely drive me crazy.

I am using a Power Support anti-glare. I have gone with the crystal protectors in the past but I have to say that I love the anti-glare. Mostly because I don't have to clean the screen so much. Since I'm pretty anal about those things too I am willing to sacrifice a tiny bit of screen clarity for less fingerprints. And to be honest I'm not sure the screen clarity is that much worse.

To each his own.

Naked on iPad 1, anti-glare on iPad 2 and iPhone 4. Love it on the iPad, but not so much on the iPhone.

GhostArmor iPad 1, InvisibleShield iPhone 4.

iPad 2, nothing but a SmartCover and a ShaggyMac microfiber cloth. I liked it so much I peeled off the InvisibleShield on my iPhone 4 and am naked on both. The screen's SO much nicer this way.

0 scratches on both units.

Ok, here's the deal:

I'm pretty anal. Every phone I've ever had has had a screen protector on it. My iPhone 4 has a screen protector AND a case on it. When I got my iPad 2 a couple of days ago, I put a screen protector and wraparound case on it (case is similar to a Belkin Grip Vue but a more generic version). I also keep it in a folio type external case for traveling around.

The screen protector was royally pissing me off because the case kept making it bubble up around the edges and it was really hard to clean off. Today I had enough. I was trying to read on the train and couldn't even concentrate because I kept looking at that stupid screen protector. When I got to work, I took it off and threw it out.

Anyone else going without a screen protector? iPad 1 owners--how have you fared with scratches in the last year? iPad 2 owners--any scratches yet?

I don't use screen protectors for scratch protection.

Aside from the obvious, I find that the Anti-Glare variety of screen protectors have a better touch feel and smudge resistance.

I use my iPad with no protection (put it in a sleeve when in not using it)

iPhone - 2 yes with no protection and not a scratch.

You just have to be careful but it's nice to appreciate the design and thinness without a case or screen protector; I recommend it.

I've owned an iPhone 3G, 3Gs, 4, iPad 2 and I've never used a screen protector. Never got my screen scratched or messed up.

I thought the same... until two days ago when I found a honking big scratch on my iPhone 4 screen. No idea where it came from. The thing has three homes... my pocket (nothing else in there), my desk at work and my desk at home.

NO idea how it got there but sometimes ***** happens. Will be getting a screen protector on my next iPhone. Had one on the iPad from day one and it's staying there now.

Been protector-less on my iPhone 4 since launch day - no scratches. Not on the front, at least. I did slap a sticker on the back because it does get some scratches on it. But not the front.

I'm going protector-less on my iPad 2 as well. Again - I'm using a DoDoCase BOOKback for the back to keep it from scratching when I set it down. But nothing for the screen. Just the SmartCover.

I really don't like the way the protection films like Zagg's feel. Sort of tacky, too much friction, squeaky. Not for me.
