I'm honestly thinking of getting the Vision Pro

Originally I was thinking of waiting for the consumer model Vision Pro since $3500 for a first gen headset is absolutely insane, but then I started thinking.

See, a little backstory: I love VR. If you've followed me from my posts in all the rumor articles I was explaining my VR background and things about the VR industry, so I'm one of the only people in this forum who was excited about an Apple HMD even if it was expensive.

I have a Quest 2 as my headset, but to be fully honest...the Quest 2 is awful. AR Passthrough is black and white and low quality since it was made for VR in mind and it's passthrough is meant for utility so you could step out of your playspace for a moment to do something without taking the headset off. The Quest 3 and Pro have proper passthrough but even then it's not ideal as the image quality is horrible. And that's the biggest issue with the Quest HMDs: The image quality. For games, it's perfect, but for any other kind of media consumption or even doing work on it, it's too poor. It's why people pretty much only use the Quest as a gaming headset.

Which brings me to why I'm genuinely thinking of getting the Vision Pro: To replace my iPad. You see, the iPad used to be my favorite Apple product since the iPad 2. I used it constantly and always, sometimes over my PC. But recently Apple's kinda caused the iPad to languish. iPadOS has been the second banana in terms of OS features, always getting last year's iOS features, and lately I've been using my iPad less and less. Then last year I got a 14 inch Macbook Pro, and that had essentially replaced all my iPad's functions since the display and OS is better than my iPad's.

I was thinking of getting an iPad Pro, used or new...but then I had a thought: Why should I get a iPad I would barely use, potentially spending over a thousand dollars, when I could get the Vision Pro, a new OS with a new control layout that I love, that I could do more with than an iPad, and could also replace my Quest 2 for non-gaming stuff. I barely use my iPad anymore, pretty much only using it in the bathroom and on the bed. But seeing the Vision Pro, I can see using it a lot more than my iPad, since I don't have to carry a tablet with me. I just wear the headset and I have the OS with me.

And that's the big thing that has my attention on the headset: The display. A 4K Micro-OLED display with me that's easily transportable. Essentially a mini Pro Display XDR for less the cost. The content consumption I can do with this thing would be incredible, to the point it could potentially replace my traditional monitor with how good it is

I'll have to try it on at the Apple Store in January before I make the decision, and if I do get it, I'd probably have to do monthly payments using my Apple Card. But right now, I'm looking at this, and gears are turning in my head.

Well bear in mind I gotta try it on first before I buy. I'm not gonna just jump in blindly. I didn't make the switch to Apple Silicon Macs until people tested M1 and verified it blew expectations and the competition.
I saw somewhere on the web that display provider Sony cannot supply more than 400 thousand pairs of displays for it in 2024.

So if you aren't buying it blindly you may end up waiting as late as 2025.

The demand's rather strong for something costing half that of a Mac Pro.

Yeah, OP, if you‘re really serious about this, better pre-order and send back (or sell for a profit … 😲) if it doesn‘t live up to (your) expectations. Vision Pro is bleeding-edge tech and will be extremely supply-constrained.

If you start saving $200/month now, by the time it’s released, you’ll have enough so that your monthly payments will be roughly $200/month. This is for the base model of course. Who knows what upgrades will be available for this.

I just remembered I have the Veterans Discount since my family's retired military so assuming the headset will have the discount that knocks off $400 on the price.

God damn y'all are putting me on the spot lmao

Crap...I was really hoping to try it at the Apple Store first then order it if I liked it...welp!

Just laying out all the data for an informed decision, buddy

Last thing we want to happen is you waiting from 2023 to 2025 or paying scalper fees.

I'm interested in a Vision Pro but not to the level that I'd pay scalper fees. I'm not in a rush to just get it. If I get it, I get it, if I don't, I don't. I'm not gonna lose sleep if I get it in January or not. It's a want, not a need. I said I'm thinking of getting it, but not 100% that I'm getting it.

We will have to see as we get closer to release if I'll get it or not as financial status could change by then and I might need to do something else.

That's good to know but the length of your 1st post came across that you were really that interested to get 1 within 1st month.

It’s a free country. Go ahead.

Let us know how it fairs in real-world use.

Well I'm explaining my rationale to why I would get it when a lot of people are wondering "why would you spend $3500 on this?" The Vision Pro would replace so many of my devices. TV, computer monitors, iPad, VR HMD, all consolidated into just the Vision Pro. Forget the Black Mirror cameras, forget the creepy FaceTime avatars. The real highlight of this headset is just how many devices it can replace and how it's a better iPadOS than god damn iPadOS lmaooooo.

Lol. I wouldn’t buckle under the pressure. We will have to see how far the orders will back up but I doubt whether they will sell that many of these. Then again I’m not really a headset person.

That’s how I got sucked in with the Apple Watch 7 and now it’s up in the attic collecting dust

Finally! Someone got what the Vision Pro's trying to do...

Be the replacement of TVs, computer displays, iPads, etc into 1 device.

Naturally there will still be people who will have more than 1 device but for most it will be more than 1-2 devices.

That's what the iPhone did in 2007 when Steve showed the worldwide shipping numbers of mobile phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, PCs and game consoles.

It will succeed if it is priced $429-1599 like the iPhone.

See, a little backstory: I love VR.

I'm curious - this seems reason enough, no need any additional reasons. There's simply no other VR headset currently available or in the pipeline will be better than the Vision Pro in terms of VR specs, and Apple's strong developer ecosystem means apps will be readily available.

As long as you believe in VR, the Vision Pro is a no-brainer. As for the $3,500 price tag... it's not more expensive than the Mac Pro, the solid gold Apple Watches or even the Pro Display XDR. I don't see the problem. If it were like $35,000 then yes the price really is a problem.

If there is very limited world wide stock, those who manage to snag one will obviously review it to death. There will bound to be numerous youtube videos done on it and if it does what people are expecting it to, which is blow their mind away then you may suffer from 'why oh why did I wait to get one'. your 'want' quickly changing to a 'need' :)

$3500 is expensive but that's sadly playmoney in high end VR land.

Oh look it's the best mixed reality headset in the world currently, the Varjo XR3:

varjoxr-3.png

A bargain at $6,500-8,000. "Well that not bad for a high resolution displays and flawless AR passthrough in a standalone headset. They look awesome and I bet they got long battery life at that cost." Uh yeah mate, the XR3 ain't wireless. Here's the cable for it lmao

Alright now that it's plugged into my PC let's load up VRChat on it...oh wait...I need to install Valve's Lighthouse base stations to use it for games. Hey another $1000, and said base stations require a large playspace.

So...they're big and heavy, require a PC to use, and require even more gear to use it for games, and cost as much as a base spec Mac Pro...CAN I HAVE FOUR OF THEM?

The same is true with the Bigscreen Beyond

bigscreen-beyond-vr-headset-preview-hands-on-2.jpg

These are $1000 and also require Valve's Base Stations to even use, which drives the price to almost $2000, and this isn't even considering the fact you're gonna need a VR ready PC for these as well which is another $1000.

Versus these:

These are $3500, and just need a battery bank. You can just take them out of the box and go. That alone makes it a bigger bargain than these other high end VR headsets.

Not to mention spec wise it surpasses the Varjo XR3, at over half the cost.

Not all things need to sell in large volumes to be successful... there was a time where you would not have the iPhone to compare to.... If a unit such as the Vision Pro or Vision Air in total sells in the million+ per quarter it will be a success (not likely to be priced less than $1,500 in any near future timeframe and that tier won't be for 2+ years). This is a long play, and the play that is being worked on is the Apple Glasses... this is just a specialty product in Apple's mind to test the hardware, start defining a marketplace, and provide hardware to develop with... the buyers will start figuring out how/what this will be used for.

It took Apple about a decade to reach quarter billion iPhones annually.

Apple's working to lower the cost of the Vision Pro over time. If They're able to ship 333 million Vision AR headsets by 2023 then they're heading towards that direction.

But recently Apple's kinda caused the iPad to languish. iPadOS has been the second banana in terms of OS features, always getting last year's iOS features, and lately I've been using my iPad less and less.
VisionOS has some unique features that the other operating systems don’t have, but it will probably be behind in many shared features for a while. The public demos that were given reflect the unique features, but haven’t really allowed people to explore the limitations.

The Vision Pro will initially be worse than the Quest 2 and other current VR setups for most of the apps people currently use on the Quest 2, but it will allow you to do some new things that other headsets can’t do well.

They were farther ahead of release date than the introduction of the iPhone and that announcement had Steve Jobs using multiple prototypes each with one function or two to demonstrate and was not something you could play with. The expectation that the public demos would be able to demo randomly anything you wanted, or all features... crazy.

WAIT! I just realized another use case for the Vision Pro for me: The cameras. And no, I'm not talking about that disturbing Black Mirror crap that they had in the presentation, I'm talking about POV shots. The Vision Pro could replace a GoPro, and offer better POV angles than a GoPro, since it's literally where your eyes are.

I could do POV filming of unboxings, I could start a vlog and never have to show my face.

Okay now I'm getting even more excited.
