Yea but look at how much the video needs to he zoomed out to accommodate the notch

Not worse than idiots zooming a 2.35:1 movie to fill a 16:9 frame...

Viewing real estate is actually the same or slightly larger than a 7+ from what I've read, NOT including the notch. And like I said earlier, if people want an "immersive" experience, maybe their phone is not the best device to watch a movie!! There's this thing called IMAX for example, or a large TV, but you know, something a little bit larger than 5.8"...

I feel bad but reading your comment legit made me laugh out loud. LOL

Much less than otherwise would have been on a 16:9 screen like the current iPhones.

And if they had hidden the notch using the OLED screen to have small top and bottom bezels on the phone, it would still look like this.

So what happens when you're browsing safari and got this black thing at the top of the screen ? With silly signal bars and battery either side

Honestly, I’m not sure. Because these newer phones have 2:1 aspect ratios they’re starting to look very wide in landscape. If you look up the HIG there’s details on how to layout apps for landscape. I believe it’ll put black bars on the sides at times but am not 100% sure.

Don't even start. I don't want to hear no excuses, because there's so much in this

Probably the same thing that happens when I browse safari on my 7+: nothing. Instead of having the time at the top there's the notch and the rest of the information is on the left and right sides. Big deal.

Fair enough , the two areas beside the Notch just seem unnecessary. Would have looked cleaner with 100% oled agreed?

I just thought of another challenge on the X with Facial ID. I'm often in meetings where I am waiting on a client email or family text etc (and I know MANY professionals & see MANY professionals using their phone during meetings for this very reason). Every time - during said meeting - I'm going to have to put the phone up to my face.. that isn't exactly a great thought.

Kinda yes. Then again, I don't mind the notch at all to be honest. HIG reveal that Apple did take care of it and it shouldn't be a concern. To me the X looks pretty neat, what am I gonna do? ;)

They always do this. They come out with something and then it has this obtuse obviously solvable issue and then the next year they find a solution to it and act like they've done some kind of innovation that nobody else has.

A bezel-less screen is not that hard.

The fact that they got rid of Touch ID is a step backwards.

Face ID is a nice touch, but they made a mistake... with this phone here. And there's a lot in this.

Also,

They said they spent years trying to make a bezel-less display... and on the third bite of the apple, we get this phone here. They made one crucial mistake. Just look at it. Just look:

Look, look! L-look what's going on in the picture. I'm not going to say what it is. It's staring you right in the face.

They wanted to have a bezel-less display but they failed. They failed big time. What immersion?
Everyone was skeptical of TouchID when it came out as well. The next iteration supposedly will have TouchID under the screen, if they get the tech working properly. But who cares, they still make the classic style for those that want it.

As for the notch, people would complain if it didn't have a front facing camera because of FaceTime, people would complain if the phone was taller to incorporate the cameras, people would complain if the screen was smaller to incorporate the camera, people just complain you can't please anyone, so don't buy anything this decade nothing is good wait until 2027 they'll have all the kinks worked out and there will be a new interface to complain about and wait longer for those kinks to be fixed.

Would have looked like all the almost bezel-less android phones had they done that.

My personal preference is that I don't mind the notch and do prefer it to give a more all front screen, including following the radii of the corners. Looks quite sharp in person.

I can understand someone preferring to have it hidden using the screen though.

My guess though is that Apple purposely did not hide it to keep a more unique look so that it doesn't just look like all the other almost bezel-less Android phones.

The end result is compromised be can see what they were going for, but like, the fact that there's a notch staring you right in the face deflates the point.

"Not that hard"? "Obviously solvable issue"? Where do you suppose they hide all this stuff if there's no bezel on the front?

In the hands on photos and videos the notch really doesn't seem to be that distracting.

They could have put small bezels top and bottom would have looked much cleaner

Therein lies the problem. I guess a bezel-less screen isn't so easy then.

I get it, they could have used the screen to hide the notch. It would have looked like the new Samsung and LG phones with bezels at the top and bottom. And my guess is that they didn't do this because they want the iPhone to have a unique look compared to other phones.

They're going to have to do the obvious. Put it all behind the screen.

Best looking of the bunch is still the X.

And oh look, the androids have a weird black area are on top (and bottom no less!). hmmmm I wonder what they put in there...

I, for one, am SO VERY HAPPY that you finally gave us your opinion, OP. Personally, I never make my phone buying decisions until I can see "freepomme"'s opinions on the subject. Now I know that I shouldn't buy the iPhone X because of your thoughts. You've made this decision so much easier for me and I simply cannot express enough gratitude that you finally told me how you feel. It almost feels as if you're speaking directly to me!
