If the OP was interested in novelty, he wouldn't be using a 3GS right now.

Makes little sense. If the OP wasn't interested in novelty, he wouldn't have bought a 3GS, which was novel at some point, and he wouldn't be looking to upgrade to something even more novel while their current phones work fine.

I'd keep the 3GS ... it's still an able device.
I upgraded from my 3GS to 4S because my 3GS broke, but otherwise, it was fine.

Instead of asking the masses if you should upgrade or wait, why not ask yourself if the 3GS is still working well enough for you and your needs?

If you don't mind the 3GS (like many here feel considering how many 'it still works great' comments there have been), stay with it.

Obviously, you don't need the latest and greatest since you're still rocking the 3GS... so it should matter even less when the next version comes out.

If you need an upgrade, the 4S will be leaps and bounds better than what you're currently using... faster, a SIGNIFICANTLY improved camera and screen, and Siri.

I would get the 4S. I'd have to have it.

The real reason is because- I don't believe the rumors about the iPhone 5. I just don't believe it.

The iPhone 4 & S already has an established dominance that isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I like the form factor, I like where they're going with this. I like the size, the look, the feel, the shape, the color.

I love everything about the current iPhone.

It's not really about what other people have to say. It's just me. And Apple. Go on their website, let it speak to you. Obviously you like the 3GS, not so much the 4. So...

I don't buy every Apple product that comes out. I didn't buy any iPads. I just use them. Every tech product I buy- I adore above everything else.

Don't listen to people here. There's people here who literally buy every iPhone as soon as it comes out. THEY WILL ALWAYS TELL YOU TO BUY NOW BECAUSE THEY ARE ADDICTS THEMSELVES.

Here's what's going to happen in either situation:

YOU BUY NOW: You get stuck with a 4S while the fanboys here telling you to buy the 4S get the 5/6 anyway, leaving you in the dust, regretting asking these people anything.

YOU WAIT: You get the next iPhone and the same fanboys who told you to buy the 4S sell their 4S's and get the 5/6. At least with this option, you win out as well.

Ergo, you should NEVER LISTEN TO PEOPLE HERE. They are mostly a bunch of rabid Apple fanatics who will always buy the next iPhone and sing its praises. Don't ask them anything about buying your next phone. If you like the 3GS and its giving you no trouble, keep it. If you need something on the 4S, buy it. Simple as that.

Here's my answer though. I'd wait for the goddamn phone. I have a 3GS and there's nothing wrong with it. I have the software up to date and I'm going to buy the next one the day it comes out.

You don't want him to listen to anyone else but you? You must have also forgotten that this is an iPhone forum so there should be Apple and iPhone fanatics here. I'm sure if the OP really wanted to keep his 3GS he wouldn't have come here asking for opinions. No one here knows what is coming in the next iPhone, but if the OP can upgrade now why wait? The 4S is an amazing phone.

He doesn't know what he wants. That's why he's asking us. I'm telling him to figure out what he wants because this forum will tell him to get the 4S because we're mostly a bunch of Apple addicts who will get the current phone no matter what.

It's most likely going to be a heck of a lot longer than 4 months as they have moved the iPhone release to the end of the year.

I say upgrade then sell your 4s and get the next one with a bit of out of pocket $$. You could put $50 away a month and by the time the next i is out you should have enough to cover the cost for both of you. (with the sale of your 4s's)
I would buy some band protection like lucky labs has to keep your phone in the best possible condition for resale purposes..... and front and back protection as well. Good luck

Hey cynics, does this post fit your bill of a "good" post? Wouldn't want to disappoint you again!

Lol @ putting $50 away a month :)

Sometimes i think people forget why they went thro the process of becoming a member.

Oh yes, they were interested in other peoples opinions and experiences ,and may have needed help themselves at some point. Maybe some could look at their own early day posts and replies and remember they were noobs too !

Occasionally the replies some members give makes me wonder why they even bothered to log on and read the post they are hitting on.

"Become part of the solution, not the problem" comes to mind.

The guys obviously in a dilemma and is after direction !

My 2 cents is go with your gut feeling.

You should weigh up the pro's and con's and move forward.

If one did not purchase something for in fear of whats new out around the corner, then one would not make a purchase at all.

Happy days.

Well all the "friendly" bicker... er... opinions can stop now. The wife and I pulled the trigger, and got 2 new 4Ss. Wow, $1100+ for 2 cell phones... she justified 'em as Valentine's Day gifts for each other... That's cool (even though I already ordered her roses ). Such as life. You only go around this big blue ball once, so I guess I'll enjoy what I can now.

Thank you all for your opinions/advice. If you guys want to continue this discussion, go ahead, but keep it down to a dull roar (the kiddies are sleeping :D)

A bit hypocritical of you don't you think?

I buy a new iPhone each time one comes out because I can...... I bought the 4s when it came out and never used it until it could be jailbroken, I bet that really chaps your hide. I still have a 3gs, bet that one gets under your skin too!!
Some of us aren't poor and can afford a new iPhone every time it's released. I might buy 2 next time just to stick it to you! Either way it's not really your concern what I/we do with our money.

A rather odd response given your signature: 'I find it funny how people list all their iDevices in this space, trying to compensate for something are we? Why do you think anyone cares?' [Of course the answer is that people want to show the experience they have with various Apple devices when they make comments about the user experience.]

@OP: You'll enjoy the 4S's - they are truly a step up from the 3GS. Besides, when you next upgrade you can just get the improved, second version of the iPhone5 (presumably the iPhone5S).
