To each his own

Brother-in-law loves his Blackberry and swears by it
Friend has some other phone and swears by it

Neither like the iPhone even though they have dealt with it some by co-workers and me.

So be it

I know EXACTLY how you feel bro!!

I had this shiny new 2009 Corvette but it was still just a car with 4 wheels and an engine. I had it for a day before I decided to go back to my 1920 Studabaker. After all, who needs a little more speed and some crappy new features? My Studabaker still gets me where I'm going just like the Corvette, so clearly they are equal!!

/sarcasm

Anyone else sick of these threads yet?

Anyone else remember when people like this didn't post on these forums? That was nice.

Anyone else sick of this guy yet, after one post on this thread?

For me the improvements are not worth upgrading, when I feel next year will bring a whole new iPhone, which coincides with my 2 yr contract being up. For now my 3g is still as interesting as the day i bought it, Im a person that gets bored with stuff very easily and so far my 3g still keeps my attention so why change everything up?

im not sick of this thread

your type of post though is what im sick of:cool:

I was skeptical at first too. Then I tried the phone and the speed is amazing. I think there is actually a more noticeable bump up in web page rendering speed between 3gs and 3g than 3g and 2g. It's like when I upgraded my computer from a 486 to a pentium...props to you if you have the willpower to downgrade back down to a 3g, but I can't do it. Also, I don't want to be in a situation where a quake 3 type game is released for open gl 2.0 and I can't play it on my 3g.

I couldn't agree more ... That's why I have a digital camera though, haha.
Yeah, because it's equally convenient to be carrying around a camera AND a phone AND a camcorder, right?

And why get a phone with internet when there are laptops! You can fit your Camera, Camcorder, Laptop and Phone all in one convenient backpack!

Well ... I won't know if I have the will power until I walk back into that AT&T store, haha.

since when do serious photographers, video recorders use an iphone for quality work? any dedicated device is better

stop badgering this guy

he had an iphone 3gs, and returned it for understood reasons

why you are being this way is puzzling and uncalled for

You point out a lot of why I didn't get so much of the bickering over the early upgrade problems for iPhone 3G buyers. It really isn't worth it to buy a new iPhone every year unless you can almost make your money back on eBay by selling the old one.

As you (or someone else) said, it's definitely worth it if you had the original model. I can't just sync up my entire music library, but I can just click on every playlist I have created (many different artist playlists), put 1,000 photos on there, put an entire season of a TV show, throw in a couple of movies, actually use music videos -- in other words, it was worth it for me. The 32GB is the biggest deal, and the zippy speed (both hardware and from EDGE to 3G) is right behind. Jury is still out on the camera, but it seems to be noticeably better, and the video looks pretty good playing back on my phone.

You can "win" in the battle against AT&T for upgrade eligibility. It's easy... keep your iPhone in good condition for 11 months, then sell it on eBay and make up MORE than the difference. Observe:

July 2008: Buy iPhone 3G 16gb for $299
June 2009: Sell iPhone 3G 16gb for $???
(Some crazy limey bought mine on eBay for just under $400)
June 2009: Buy iPhone 3G S 32gb for $499

End result: Upgraded to 32GB 3G S for around $100.

Of course, I already knew I'd be renewing the contract for at least another two years, so THAT "cost" doesn't apply to me as much as someone who might be looking to change carriers before the two years are up.

Bottom line: For $99, the speed boost alone is worth the cost. Oh, and you'd be crazy if you think I'm getting any less $$$ for my 3G S this time next year!

Bottom line, I do enjoy the new features and power and speed ... BUT, I'll enjoy the $599 much more, and I will enjoy the upgrade pricing on the next iPhone even more.

I wasn't going to bother, either, but a friend bought one and let me check it out. It had a few extra features I'll probably rarely use but the speed increase was kind of nice and it turns out I could get a 16gb for $200 so I figured why not. I look at it now and then and think "why did I get this?" but, again, I had the money, it's good for at least another year and, being a dev, it's always good to have the latest and greatest. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who might have better things to spend the money on and I sure as hell wouldn't have bought one for more than $200.

I sold my 3G for $499 and bought the 3G S for $199 with a 2 year extension. No brainer for me, but I would have purchased it for $399. After using it for 2 days now I probably would pay the full price because thats how amazing I think the phone is.

Of course I repsect the OP's position I just disagree with it. And yes next years verson will be better, faster, etc, but lifes too short for me to wait :)

When I look at this model though, it is more of an upgrade than the 3G was a year ago. The 3G was essentially a first gen iPhone with a new back and 3G chipset inside (and aGPS), while this one is a totally new phone internally. I have been really impressed thus far using my 3GS, and I expect it will last me a good two years until 2011. No lags, hangs or anything. My 3G produced many of the same problems my 2G had, and this one is totally the opposite. Well worth the upgrade if you can get it for $199/$299. I can't justify spending more than that on it, though.

if you remember when the first iPhone was introduces 3 years ago they said that this was the first of many to come and called it the iphone road map, so why wait for small upgrade in hardware when in the next few years technology is going to be so much more advanced and better. I'm waiting for many reason and if you want to know just ask

This is probably what you'll be saying next year too. "Why buy now when next year's model is going to be so much better??"

Of course as long as you're happy with it, what does it matter what we thing around here?

Exactly. That's what I don't understand about these types of threads. What do people want, a built in coffee maker? Virtual reality? Nano implants?

The upgrades will be incremental increases in speed, resolution, etc. If that's not "upgrade" enough for someone, who cares?

People can go to the stores and test it for themselves if they're having doubts about upgrading...

I pretty much felt the same way.
Except for a good friend of mine I went with her to get her 3Gs she had on reserve the day in came out and I already been had my3GS. I am not eligible for an upgrade so I wasn't worried about getting the 3gS. The only way I would get it is if someone handed it to me.

I wasn't going to pay extra for features that should have been on there and is a little snappier like how I would I have liked the 3G to been from the jump.

So she got her iphone and the apple genius is running over a few things with her and what not. We leave 5 minutes later and get into the car. Then she says, "if you want this phone we can switch yours and you can keep this"

Im like, "are you serious you don't have to do that its ok"

She told me I could switch her because she knows its not that much of a difference. So we switch. There is definitely a difference. I would probably be a little disappointed go back to the 3g. 3Gs is definitely quicker. All of the apps. Response to everything you do is pretty much overall snappier. I love it. Just working on getting mms. I can't do it. dang

If you really are a power user, your probably going to have a late model phone. For the 3G S I was at the $499 which seems crazy but it's not. I was lazy and I wanted the cash in hand so I dumped my 3G for $300. I'm sure I could have gotten $350 if I waited on craigslist, or $400+ on ebay. If they announced the unlock, I would have waited, sold it unlocked for probably close to $500 on craigslist.

I will probably upgrade every year. The 3G S was NOT $500. It was $500 - market value in June 2010. Could be $200, but realistically it could be $400. Even if I have to sell it at the same price that 3G phones are going for, I can't imagine my phone wont sell first, unless the unlock comes into play.

Everyone is assuming that a next gen iPhone is coming next year. There is always the possibility that next year is truly minimal and people will blow their eligibility on that phone because they don't want to wait a whole year more. You just never know I guess.

Um, no - I fully plan on upgrading next year and I imagine most of us 3G holdouts are too.

My only concern is I want to switch to Verizon and chances are it'll be 2011 rather than next year (which would make me mid-cycle). But if that happens so be it, I'll just pay the ETF.

For now, being a power user it probably would be a good idea to avoid playing with the 3Gs. :p Especially past December which is when my eligibility begins!
