Being in Toronto it's so much easier to notice the speed difference from the 3g.

I Know Rogers is running the 3.5g through Canada....I think the speed is 7.2mbps. Once At+t get their act together it will be much more worth the upgrade for you guys and gals in the US.

Cheers!

you make a great point, problem is, we've been waiting for AT&T to get their act together since the original iPhone....:D

That said I always have decent service but 3G coverage is still spotty

Yah, there was no way I was going to commit to another contract because I most likely will want to upgrade next year, and i'll want that pricing then. So I went for the "Commitment Free" $599 route. I can buy myself a nice new guitar for that much.

I was thinking this one:

Instead of this one:

haha

if your saying you can get such a beautiful gibson for $599, you've lost your mind (or you're a genius. Tell me where to buy it!)

but if your talking about $2400+ which a 2 year contract essentially is, then yes, I'd go for the guitar too, as long as I could find a way to not have to pay for cellphone service at all. But I can't, so the tradeoff really doesn't make sense.

however, I do agree that Gibson>iPhone

P.S. Hey Spaz! if you wander in here, look closely at that guitar. It has scan lines too!

You can't have it all.

You have a phone, that is an ipod (this was enough for me), that connects to the internet with the best mobile browser, have access to email, thousands of apps, many of which are free... and the update to this phone, in a year, is to make this phone twice as fast, yet people still complain?

People should know what they're getting into when buying this phone. I mean come on, click a few threads in the forum. People expecting 3 megapixel camera in a phone to perform like a digi cam in both photo and video is just ridiculous.

This is a PHONE that happens to do other things pretty damn well and other things exceptional.

That's America for you.

iPhone 3G.... iPhone 3G S. S means speed and that's what we got. It's not iPhone 3G Digital Camera.

This guys got the right idea. Agreed, like I mentioned before, even more for me living in Canada with the higher speed on the mobile browser and such.

honestly... the iPhone 3gS wasn't a big of an upgrade from my 3g, i wasnt planning on upgrading but i had nothing to lose.. i sold my 3g FAST and i might as well get a newer phone :)

I doubted first as well. Then, I was bummed (but wasn't surprised) when at&t didn't extend early upgrade to me (only 11 months in contract.) Well, NOW I'm looking forward to receiving my 32gb 3GS Monday morning and here's why:

1. Video quality is slick. Have you seen the youtube videos? Nice!
2. People are saying the speaker is louder (which is a HUGE plus for me)
3. Speed, speed, speed. Have you read the anandtech write-up? Huge jump from 3G architecture in processor, ram, and video capabilities. You know how much more expensive it would be to 'double' your speed on your desktop? This is a no brainer for techies like myself.

Paid ~$570 (including tax in CA.) After selling current 16gb 3G (~$350), net cost is $220. I don't mind extending my contract by another year (currently on month 11 of my 24 month contract.)

But, the comparative 'analyst' in me still reads through these threads :D

For me, it's the speed.

This phone is so much faster than my 2G phone it's unreal. I actually find myself using Maps, Safari and other apps so much more now, where I used to wait an eternity. The camera is so much better I actually take pictures with it now.

The other thing that tipped me over the edge is the fact that TomTom is coming to the iPhone - one less gadget for me to tote around.

I'm a happy camper. :)

I feel the same way. The speed difference is unreal.

I upgraded from a 3G to a 3GS, and I don't regret it.

Then again, I just love technology and gadgets, and I'm sad enough to be really excited by the 3GS. It's not a huge leap forward from the 3G, but it's a solid evolutionary step.

I hope I'll be just as excited by the 2010 model, and 2011, and 2012...... :D

You could get the Epiphone version for less than that, but that would be like getting a Zune instead of an iPod Touch ... Right? Anyway, I've bought so many things from my local Guitar Center they basically give me everything at cost now ... So I can snag that particular model Les Paul for about $1500. Not quite $599, but close enough to convice me ... haha

What people dont realize about the 3gS, aside from all the video recording, camera, voice recognition, bla bla bla....the best things about it that i have seen so far are the screen that really keep the fingerprint smudges away, like seriously....and also the speaker is much louder! plus, having the battery percentage is a nice touch. those are 3 things right there that i personally think makes the upgrade worth it.

Don't get me started on the battery indicator. I can understand video recording being a selling point and never expected Apple to make it available on the lesser-hardware 3G. And of course the compass is hardware specific. Had they allowed backgrounding I'd also expect 3GS only. But the freaking battery? Come on.

It's only worth it to upgrade if: 1) You were going to be an iPhone subscriber for two years anyway (which I was, and AT&T SERVICE WISE is only going to get better), and 2) You can sell your original iPhone for a reasonable price to cover the cost.

Seeing as I knew I could do both, I took the plunge. And going from 8GB to 16GB is impressively awesome, let alone now I can take some great videos. And I mean GREAT!

I'm there with ya. I'm on a family plan and my mom gets us a great FAN discount, so I don't see us changing from AT&T anytime soon. Also, I was able to sell my old 3G for the same price as my 3G S which worked out perfectly.

Why is this? This is the only reason I'm considering one from my 3G. Why are people willing to pay $300-400 for a used 3G?

( Thanks AT&T for your 30 day policy ), and this means someone's getting a refurb that's in perfect condition!

I think a lot of people are going to be getting 3Gs in great condition. When I went to the ATT store, a lot of people were swapping out a 3G (which they bought a week before) for a 3GS. I know I did.... Apparently that was common.

Sorry your 3GS wasn't everything you hoped it would be!

Because they don't want contracts and/or they don't wanna use AT&T, so why not buy a used 3G and jailbreak/unlock?

Seems like a good deal if you're one of those people...

Hence the sale of my 3G for 350 bucks. And purchase of my 3GS for 200.

Easy-peasy.

I like upgrading every year. I spend enough per month with AT&T. Why not have a new phone if I can subsidize the upgrade by selling the old phone? My 3G looked BRAND NEW. Sweet deal for someone who didn't use AT&T.

Yanno... I sold my 1st gen iPhone for 300 bucks.

;)

I bought my 3G for 250 bucks.

I figure I'm doing better every year. Let's just ignore the fact that I paid full price for the Edge iPhone, shall we? hehehe.

Oh... and to the OP:

If you paid full price, I don't blame ya one bit for returning it and buying that sweet guitar.

Good call. :)

uhhh???

So the other night I got the 3G S⃣ itch. I decided that I wanted to get it, I could afford it, and that if I happened to be up at 7:30, I would go down to AT&T and if they happened to have any left, I would get one.

So like a kid on Christmas morning, I woke up right at 7:30, threw on some clothes and drove down to the AT&T store where a pathetic line of about 7 people had developed, haha. I hopped on line and by the time it was my turn I was told they had 2 16GB White, 10 16GB Black, 30 32GB White, and 25 32GB Black. Needless to say, I bought one. I went with the 16GB White since I don't really need the space as I use my 32GB iPod Touch for all of my media needs, and I wanted white so my girlfriend and I could finally tell the difference between our phones, haha.

So I got home and had second thoughts, I taped the receipt to it and set it on my desk as I backed up my 3G and and everything. Then I just ripped it open, turned it one and played with it for about 20 minutes at which point I realized, "These new features are nice ... but i'll never use them". The only new feature I could possibly see myself using frequently is video. It was not fast enough to make me feel like my 3G was lagging at all, and honestly ... that auto-focus is crap.

My opinion, if you're going to be advertising a product for it's incredible photo and video capabilities ... make those capabilities incredible and innovative ... not 1999. They only pretty cool feature was the video editing, but why would I need that? I'll pass.

So I packed everything back up nicely into the box, Jailbroke my 3G for the first time and installed Cycorder, and i'll be returning my 3G S⃣ today ( Thanks AT&T for your 30 day policy ), and this means someone's getting a refurb that's in perfect condition!

I can see the desire to upgrade from 2G to 3G, and from 2G to 3G S⃣ ... just not 3G to 3G S⃣ unless you really need the 32GB of space. Just my opinion.

Thanks - Eric

Dude, you're completely disregarding the fact that it has a lot more ram and processing power... Everything runs flawlessly, more powerful apps can run on it, and the jailbreak will be MUCH mor fun to mess with. Think again brotha.

I hear ya.

If I'd had to pay full price for the 3GS upgrade from a 3G?

Nope. I'd have kept my money. But, that's just me. Priorities... priorities. :)

Now, I do love me an iPhone, and I did upgrade (for 199). Which, to me? Nice.

I'd rather have a MacPro than a new bike, but my Gary Fisher Pirhana is still holding up okay. It's not like I'm extreme Mountain Bike chick anyway. ;)

My bf would no doubt rather a new bike.... then again, he rides a Cake.

Haha, you're ridiculous man. I love my 3G, but if I'm going to drop 6 bills on an upgrade that isn't that important to me, I'd rather keep my 3G and get the Les Paul.

Regardless, I do like guitars over phones ... I often silence my iPhone, pull out my guitar and relax. I've never turned off my guitar to play with my iPhone.

But, we care comparing apples to wood.

I finally took the plunge with the 3gs, upgrading from an old nokia handset. I certainly don't regret that one bit! However, I do kind of regret how much I paid for it. I took out the 32gb on a 24 month contract simply because it worked out cheaper than the 16gb on an 18 month contract with 02. I'm now wishing I'd saved myself a futher £100 by taking the 16gb on the 24 month option. So I'm thinking of returning it for this reason only.

I understand the op position, if I was already a 3g owner I wouldn't upgrade. The benefits for these users do not outway the cost at all! The 3gs is clearly a handset designed to entice more new customers, and I think apple may introduce bigger updates biannually to fall inline with contract users terms.
