Because it was on a country road in an area that he's familiar with, late at night with nobody else around for miles? While I wouldn't condone speeding in normal circumstances, this seems close to ok. Heck, I'd probably do the same thing myself if the roads were smooth and twisty.

Long ago when I was in Canada, I almost hit a ground hog while going pedal to the metal in a go-kart on a go-karting track. I avoided it only by slamming the breaks and going turning the steering wheel all the way round in the opposite direction. I crashed into the used tyre barricade, and the worst part was that nobody believed me about the groundhog; they just thought I messed up while driving.

This is the problem we have. Just because you kill a recluse who no one talks to and no one even knows their name, does that mean its ok to kill them? Saying it's ok to speed just because 'there is no one about' is stupid. How do you know there is no one coming round the next bend, or pulling out of the next junction. It only takes one.

Takes a northerner to talk sense!

How do you know there is not someone else doing the same thing coming the other way? Would you drive the same way if you knew there was a people carrier with a family and young kids coming the other way? Probably not. But how do you know there isn't that people carrier coming the other way?

If you want to let off steam in a car either do go-karting or get a track day.

Yes I am. A simple fine is not enough though; I should go to jail for a day instead.

Dude, with today's "Justice" system, you could have gone twice as fast, drunk, stoned, naked, through a school zone, going the wrong way on a one-way street, during the Santa Claus parade and you wouldn't get a day in jail.

I hope you've learned a very important lesson. Next time, get your wife to mow the lawn. :D

at night though, ive gotten my car at 110 on a 50 on country roads. before i do that though i drive the distance first to "patrol" for hidden cops then go back and let it rip hahafor 7 years about

Both state either country roads or twisty road which implies corners and therefore not necessarily being able to see on-coming traffic.

What annoyed me was the fact that if there was no cops around then he would happily speed, a blatant disregard to other road users and a very selfish attitude. Again, in my opinion.

Note the bold. Your words.

Also, there is very little chance of you staying on your side of the road if your going around corners too fast. You'll either be off the road on one side, or on the other side of the road.

Very true. Road cars not designed to go round country lanes at over 100mph. As an example; Takuma Sato (Formula One driver for Super Aguri) crashed a Honda sports car on a country road at 85mph. He was lucky to walk away from it. But if one of the world best drivers struggles under normal conditions, what hope do normal road users have? Or is it just pure arrogance? Do you ever wonder WHY we have speed limits?

Around corners?

Around bends on a road. I'm not sure how many corners there are on country roads. I think you'd get away with doing 170 km/h on many country roads in Australia without the risk of not seeing another car on the road. In many parts of the country, you'd definitely see other cars, twisty road or not.

So, you sped a little, got a fine, but now feel guilty that this was not enough and want to be banged up for a day.

You must be kidding.

Or looking for attention. :) The other threads about spilling something on a notebook or ants coming from the keyboard are kind of old. This is at least semi original. :D

There was that story about someone getting caught by police airplane going over 200 mph on a racing motorcycle. He was charged with multiple offenses, but will keep his ticket forever to show off.

I have a real problem with morons that race through neighborhoods:mad:

If I was a cop, those people would suffer my wraith, as would cell-phone girls who just need to shut up 5 minutes a day and pompous cell-guys who want onlookers to think they are important, or actually have friends.

Guilt is such a completely wasted emotion.

Learn from how you feel and don't do it again but don't feel guilty. What is feeling guilty going to accomplish?

And I wonder why you had to bring it here? Extra beating yourself up points?

Move on.

yup, in my younger days i was once caught doing 180 on a 60 zone at 3 am coming out of a club (kms), very stupid very very stupid,, got my license suspended for a year a:eek:nd the car towed and all...

what car...(in your younger days)......was capable of 180mph?
just curious. pics would be nice.

Oh, and other people get freaked when they see someone going really fast, even if they are in another lane. I was driving safely fast over a twisty pass, but an oncoming older couple saw me coming and drove off the road. No harm, but I don't want blood on my hands.

I used to race over that pass, rarely lost. Too many of my adversaries got excited and were all over the road, out of control, cause they couldn't keep up by just tracking through properly. I don't do that anymore either.

I was pulling out from my road onto the local two-lane highway. I looked both ways and all and started out. Suddenly, a group of four new sports sedans sped into view. Lucky to see them as they were going maybe 80 in a 45 zone.

It was a testing session by a car magazine. All these people could drive quite well, they were in no danger of leaving the road or anything, but other drivers are not used to looking out for people driving twice as fast as normal. Skilled drivers for sure, but idiots as well.

If I was a cop, those people would suffer my wraith...

wraith [reyth]
-noun
1. an apparition of a living person supposed to portend his or her death
2. a visible spirit

Wow, if you unleashed one of those on me that would probably make me stop speeding!

So not the TopGear team then. ;) :p

Chill out! Live a little!

Nothing wrong with driving a bit fast!!! I do it on the time, even when the cops are chasing me! (Hang on, Need for Speed Most Wanted counts, right?) :D

If you knew you were putting people's lives at risk, why did you do it? I'm sure you've done it dozens or hundreds of times, and yet you're only guilty when you get caught? Why is this?

What annoyed me was the fact that if there was no cops around then he would happily speed, a blatant disregard to other road users and a very selfish attitude. Again, in my opinion.

Two things. First off, saying "in my opinion" doesn't change what you say, it only makes you seem like you're hiding behind your words. Second, what you said is not an opinion, it's a fact. There's no reason to endanger anyone, even if it's only the slightest chance. I'm pretty sure you people can find a better way to occupy your time than driving down roads to check for cops and then wasting tons of gas shooting down them again at 100 MPH.

people make mistakes, and it takes a lesson to learn that mistake. If someone tells you that the plate is hot, how did you learn not to touch it?

He made a mistake, realized it... and wont do it again..

To to OP, I think you're over reacting a bit, but if you feel that guilty, just don't do it again. Simple enough

I'm riddled with guilt...

I know exactly how you feel. When I was in Grade 6 I was a safety patroller at my public school, and one particularly cold and snowy morning the principal bought hot chocolate and donuts for all of us. I was hungry because I skipped breakfast so I took two donuts instead of just one. The principal caught me (damn white powdery icing sugar coatings!) and ordered me into his office where I received a stern lecture. I was also riddled with guilt for years afterwards. So I speak from tearful experience when I tell you that someday society will forgive you for your crime, but only if you manage to forgive yourself first.

i only do this on straight aways....

as i said i check the road first, for cops and other "hazards" and then do so. when its a road in literally in the middle of nowhere that has been checked i feel it somewhat "safer"

illegal yes, but at the same time im sure you have sped at some point so dont try and make me feel bad about it. if not congrats on being a model driver lol

would you rather me not check the road first??

wasting "tons of gas" please im talking like a quarter mile tops in a car that gets 30mpg...

i forget that the people here on macrumors have done nothing questionable in their lives...

guess what....i also shoot fireworks on the fourth of july in colorado in my culdesac...
