I'm positive that I want this laptop, but quite frankly all the negativity and QC issues are worry me. Bad keys, touch bar problems, cracks, scratched st cetera.
I want to buy a machine for $4000, I expect it to last for at least 5 years! But, I'm worried it won't.. I just want to hear some users who are happy with their computers. This will be my main machine so I can't have it be sent to the Apple Store every other week.
I've searched for a 2015 model with the GPU, but haven't found one where I live.

Please share your positive opinions!

FWIW, my MBP (mid 2012) cost me $1700 and it has lasted more than 4 years. I won't be buying another laptop until the logic board fails.

My battery is currently only giving me only 4.5 hours of battery life, so I bought a new battery. My keyboard keys are worn from overuse, so I'm buying a new keyboard.

MacBook Pros are well made machines, and if you take care of them they can last you forever.

I know it's none of my business as it is your money after all, but I think spending $4000 on a laptop is patently absurd.

That logic never applied to computers. A laptop is not a wardrobe or a coffee maker, where better craftsmanship ensures longevity. All essential computer components are come from a small number of sources, whether you buy a cheap computer or a premium one. The more expensive price gets you better features and more premium build quality. However, what can and does affect longevity is the quality of the power subsystem (PSU/capacitors etc.) — and this is where Apple traditionally shines, as they use more expensive and higher quality components than some others.

OP whilst I generally agree with the above you should stand a chance that your MAC will last your "expected 5 years"

However if this is key to your purchasing decision then you are only guaranteed 3 years with AC and really should be looking at a replaceable system after say 30 months at a lessor price (~half) not only will you get a guaranteed 6 years cover you will stay more current with the downside of maybe different OS or some spec compromises

Given the more "Solid State" build of the new MBP which are almost just 2 pieces now the bottom Logic Board (with most things soldered or attached on) and the screen, there is considerable more repair costs should something go wrong after 3 years. The risk of failures with some of the new design is also higher as there is no proven track record to disprove otherwise, so as some suggested a 2nd Gen maybe also be a better option.

This is where the complaints get posted. Actually, the whole web is a magnet for complaints. If I paid too much attention to the web I wouldn't be driving and loving the fastest sedan in the world, or using the best cameras, best computers...etc. At some point you just have to role the dice.

I own two of the 13" Touch Bar models and now also own the 15". They are perfect and I have no issues at all with any of them. Many of my friends in the film industry have already upgraded to these new machines and not a single issue with any of them. The ONLY issues I hear about...are here.

My 1st hand experience....This is the best laptop from Apple so far.

Yes, next year will be even better and the year after that. I had last year's rMBP and it's already sold, but I can't imagine keeping a system for 5 years. I think it makes good financial sense to sell after 2 years so you can sell the old one for a good number towards the latest version.

But I digress....these are terrific machines and it's highly unlikely that you'll have any issues.

To Paraphrase Archer:

"Do you want piracy?! because *THIS* is how you get piracy"!

Also. . Skyline GT-R?

Also.. MacBook Pro is one of the most optimized machines in the world. . but they are *NOT* the "best computer". I realize I'm splitting hairs here, but I can assure you I can hand build you a desktop PC that will make your Macs look like 8088s.

And if you pay me enough, I can even make them run OS X ;)

Also totally agree about rolling the dice. Wish someone would hand me a pair [WOW that came out wrong.... Painful, but true]

Haven't had any issues and this is by far the best laptop I ever had. I did have battery issues in the beginning but for me it wasn't spotlight indexing it was photos agent running and then I was getting a lot of usage from my email synching because I have a lot of data in both. After that settled down I'm happy with the battery life. Really like the machine though the screen is the best I've ever seen on a laptop, the speakers are the best I've ever seen on a laptop, the trackpad is the best I've ever seen on a laptop and IMO the keyboard is the best I've ever seen on a laptop. That's pretty much every way I interact with it so it all adds up to some thing really great for me. I know some people have issues with the keyboard but I really love it and the older keyboards feel sloppy in comparison after a while.

Maybe you don't get desktop performance, or hardcore gaming grunt and the processor may not blow the previous version out of the water but in actual usage as a laptop it's really impressive to me.
I feel like Ive been pretty lucky thus far as well. I only occasionally follow this area of the forum now as a result.

I've had my 15" 2016 for nearly three weeks, absolutely no problems with it whatsoever, barring a very small dent it came with at the top right-hand edge of the screen. It's really very small and I am now over the disappointment of finding it. It's a nice computer. Far from perfect and too expensive in my opinion but I would not swap this one for any other brand notebook.
Take it back and get that dent swapped out. Im not sure why Apple has peeps running around with dented hardware out of the box.

Why worry you have 1 year of warranty and if you buy AppleCare you will have 3 years of warranty so nothing to worry about.

I did worry like you are in the beginning, and I even did replace 2 machines, and the first one did have heating issues it did almost burn up :p
The other one did have something loose in the screen and some graphic issues.

The third one, that one that I have now - it only have the "pop" sound issue and sadly that a disagnflaw is my guess as it only pops after it get's hot and it's only happens sometimes for me so it's not a big deal and I need this MBP and I do love the MBP it's great.
So if I do get any issues, I'll just have it repaired.
And as I'm a student (going to College again at age of 29) I did purchase the AppleCare for ony 160 USD / 159 Euro.

Agreed. And the noise too! i compared a FCPX export between my 2013 rMBP and my 2016 Macbook Pro. On the 2013, it was SO LOUD and it happened SO FAST (7 minute export). The fans started to be extremely loud within the first minute. On my new system, I could just barely hear the fans even at the 6:50 mark of the export just before it finished.

My export speed is about the same. Mostly because A) I moved to having my FCPX projects on an external hard drive, so that probably affects the performance and B) The test was mostly cutting up a .MP4 file, mostly CPU anyway.

I love mine. No issues, I found the keyboard easy to adapt to and use. Is it a little on the noisy side? Yes, but not to the point of where it annoys me or is in any way a deal breaker. If you get one with a scratch or a problem, bring it back and get another. Issues are always over-represented on forums. If you ever want to talk yourself out of a purchase, the product forum for that item is the place to visit :)

It reminds me of the time that Lord of the Rings was coming out on Blu Ray. People were giving it 1 stars. I was thinking. OMG what is wrong with these discs?! Turns out, everyone had pretty much the same comment: "Just wait for the extended version". Which was twice as expensive (around there). That is not how you rate products! I didn't want to spend around $100 for the "Extended version" I do not care if it has "more footage".

I ultimately did not buy the Blu Ray, which turned out to be a good decision. It is in my iTunes library and I can access it anywhere. I only get Blu Rays now when I have no other choice (mostly Anime - a lot of those aren't available digitally).

The bottom line is, one hundred million people could have a positive experience, 10 people could have a horrible experience, and the ONLY ones you're going to hear about are those 10..... because people do not generally review or complain when everything "just works".

The majority of complaints about the 2016 MbP are from people who are resistant to change. They dislike things they do not understand, and condemn them because, since they have no use for a particular feature, NOBODY should. The world has ended. . no MagSafe! Touch Bar, nobody needs THAT piece of garbage! "Why can't Apple just leave it like it WAS"!!!!

These are the same people, by the way, who were crying up a storm because it took so long for a MacBook Pro refresh! All these poor people said they wanted change, wanted the "next Generation" . . and then promptly turned salty when things /gasp .. CHANGED!!!!!!

Now, that's not to say that there haven't been a few isolated QC issues on the 2016 MacBook Pros. It's been the best selling MacBook yet, and no matter how diligent your Quality Control is. . you're going to have a certain percentage of defects. The odds of you getting one of those are minimal, and the reason you keep hearing about them is because of paragraph 1, so don't overthink it. If you want one, BUY ONE. If you're that terrified of defects, get one from your local Brick and Mortar store [Bbuy, Apple, W/e] and test/inspect before leaving the store.

Mine was a BTO 15" 2.9 1TB Pro 460. The machine has been FLAWLESS since day one. I wouldn't trade her for any other machine out there [exempting my Desktop PC, of course]

Agreed. That is what you get when you buy computers. Sad, but true. If you get a Hard Drive, it is not guaranteed to last you years. I have had three hard drives that failed a WEEK after purchase.

If you get a video card, it is not guaranteed to last your years. I had a faulty GTX 970 IMMEDIATELY.

I had a power supply that blew up on me (loud POP, sparks and smoke came out). I only had it for a few months.
[doublepost=1487947907][/doublepost]
QC is poor. And according to macrumors buyers guide, it says neutral. With that, and the poor QC, id stay away. The next MBP which will probably be less than a year away will have fixed the buttons, touch bar lag etc. I owned it for about 10 days before returning.

Quality did not justify the price.

Nobody can know that for sure. The 2017 models might be WORSE, might be the same, or it could be better. Especially if the rumors are true about using desktop RAM for 32GB. Might be back to where we started this time with the battery life issues.

Besides, the 2017 models will NOT be 100% error free. Why not wait for the 2018 models then?

Buy one and try it, you got 2 weeks to make up your own opinion and not base it on others :)

I own THREE of the new Machines. Taking a quick informal count, between me and my clients and friends, there are about 30 more of the new tMBP that I know (and a couple of the non touch bar) of directly.

I don't know of a single person (nor do they) who has had an issue with these new machines. The only things: My buddy spilled wine on his 13" and killed it. Until last week, my friend was working at a Genius Bar here in Burbank. According to her, defect based returns have been exceedingly rare.

So I find it nothing short of amazing that there are people here that have gotten THREE defective laptops in a row. Now maybe the math is there. Someone will have bad luck and the web is where they'll post a complaint, but I still find it beyond odd to read some of these reports.

Of course owning these machines is all I need. I know what the USB-C downsides are (zero) and whether the missing SD slot matters (it does for some) and how sweeping the improvements are over my rMBP (very).

You can always wait. It's VERY likely that the next MPB will be better...and the one after that. But I have work to do today.

Threads like this is exactly why I, while still doing research before bying, stayed far away from forums such as this. It really is like going to an AA meeting and asking whether it's okay to have a glass of wine / beer / scotch / moonshine etc. with dinner.

The return period and warranty are both there to make sure the machine works as intended, so there really is no need to be afraid of bying. I was, and to an extent still am a little bit freaked out about all the money I had to hand over all at once, but once I started using the machine and discovered that I will be earning the money back at one point or another while using a machine I actually enjoy using, it quickly became a non-issue.

With Apple, I've long ago learned that the smartest play is wait out any first revision of something so drastically changed like these new MBP's.

Also, regarding the TouchBar..
I fully expect Apple, in typical Apple form, at the next MBP rev keynote mention to talk about "Touch Bar 2 - Faster, Brighter, Better Resolution, etc" (and maybe even some haptics..)

Point being - Rev A will *not* be a 5 year computer in all likelihood if you're at all enticed by the new top line features, as those are the main things that will get ironed out and perfected quickly.

I would agree with this, enhancements to the TB most certainly will come, the TB is here to stay and will only get more enhancements.

This is patently wrong.

Apple has ironed out the things that were wrong with my 2015 rMBP. On that machine I never felt the screen could be made bright enough in some situations. The tMBP fixed that issue. They also put in a better keyboard, then finally improved the weak speakers on the rMBP. They made it smaller, lighter and battery life is great.
As I do post editing, the trackpad was too small. They fixed that too.

I've had no issues with the new machines, just like last years model.

So they took my year-old rMBP and ironed it out and this is it. I'm typing on it right now. I don't lose valuable time "waiting" for the next tweak. If it comes out and appears to be worthwhile...I'll just buy it.

Too much angst around here about whether or not to buy now or wait for the 2022 MBP with the 8K screen. Doesn't anyone have work to do? :D

It's true, they'll continue to add to and refine the TB over time. . but honestly It's not something that's going to completely revolutionize the TB interface [I mean, ok, haptic feedback would be nice, but not a feature to update from a 2016 model to next years if it happens]

So when one says "it's not a five year machine", I completely disagree. The Touch Bar is not like the gen 1 Apple Watch, which, while functional, was massively improved upon for the Series 2. It's not slow to respond, hard to read, or difficult to use/understand.... it's just there. Far more likely that most of the improvements will be software in nature, and easily applied to existing models

--obviously excluding Haptic Feedback ;)
