I'm a big fan of the older Blizzard games like Diablo I & II, and StarCraft, WarCraft I & II. However WoW was plain boring for me.
What I really are into is a very good MMOFPS that I've been playing since 2002. It's World War II Online: Battleground Europe.
It has the biggest map of them all. It's western Europe in scale 1:2, on single continous map, and all is on the same server regardless where you live in the world. The game's physiscs is the most advanced which makes the game pretty difficult, why the learning curve is step. But it is sooo revarding when you get the ropes.
This also makes it almost "kid-free". The average age is +30 something. When looking at the pictures of the people active in the forums do I believe most people are +50.

Lots of the players is active or retired service men and women from all over the world.
WWII Online is a three Branch war-game: Ground, Air and Sea. Since the map is bigger then everything is there no limitation in tactic manvering. The game has also a very advanced strategical layer, but that is only for the people that cares to join one of the two High Commands (Allied High Commands and Oberkommando der Wehrmacht).
When you gain rank will more eqipment be available. But you'll start with the deadliest infantry weapon anyhow, the rifle (different rifles for each country) plus a few grenades and smokes.
To sum up, there is no leveling and no zones to load when you move (like you do in WoW). You can fly from southeast England to western Germany if you want to (which of parts will be hostile territorium), or even down to the Alps in southern France, or up to the Fjords in southern Norway (both very impressive sights). But it will take quite some time.
