I participate on quite a few boards which operate in the political/social arena and expect to get bitch-slapped with regularity on those — perhaps that made my retort a little too reflexive.

I absolutely know the feeling! I'm always trying to talk with people as I would in real life so I rarely lash out at others just because it's easy to be rude behind a computer screen.

Regarding Tenfourfox - I recently learned that I could enable the plugins (to watch flash content for example) through the about:config. I think it's quite easy to overlook, did you know about it?

Ive got my G5 2.3DC running wonderfully....I use it in my music studio to run Logic 8. I wouldnt trade it for the world. When I get a new Intel based machine that is stronger, I will just use it as a secondary machine to do mixing and other post recording stuff.

The things are just workhorses...why put 'em down?

I ONLY own PPC, 4 of them, TOTAL COST WAS 30 BUCKS!
i use my eMacs as my main machines (1 of them at both my houses), and my Gig ethernets as networked HDs (occasionally ill actually USE them (since one eMac is on OS9 (not enough ram for Tiger)) and i will never give these up! (but then again, im 15, so im a cheapskate!)

We all are

I've got a 2005 G5 PowerMac which I got 'pre-loved' on eBay about 4-5 years ago. But it's time to upgrade, waiting on the iMac update, but I will be hanging onto the G5 for the time being as several programs I use no long run under the Intel CPUs.

Before the G5 I had a G4 400 from late 2000, that was a great computer, used it for over 7 years, upgraded the CPU with a 1.2Ghz then a 1.6Ghz (when the 1.2 stopped working) added 1.5Gb of RAM and 2x 120Gb HDDs a DVD burner, and a USB2 card to help keep it up-to-date at the time.

Reluctantly sold the G4 last year after not using it since getting the G5, it was still working, got about $120 on eBay for it. Wish I didn't have to sell it but I didn't have the space for it any more or a dedicated LCD to use it.

BTW I built a new side table unit to site the G5 on while I keep it so it has a place to live out it's semi retirement.

Just added some life to my 1.8GHz PowerMac G5 by purchasing a 5-port USB 2.0 PCI card for $8, and a USB Bluetooth dongle for $14 at my local electronic store. Going to buy the older style "fat" Apple wireless keyboard (the one that clicks and clacks loudly :D) and the wireless Mighty mouse pretty soon as well.

I mainly use a 17 inch MBP but I do love gaming on my trusty ole' Sawtooth. Theres literally thousands of neato games out there for OS 9, it's kind of a shame the quirky little games you'd find on some starving programmer's site aren't around anymore.

Over the next couple years I'd turn ole' reliable into the ultimate "Tri-Bootable" machine with OS 9, 10.4, and 10.5. 3 SSDs one for each OS, a nice beefy CPU upgrade, and a graphics boost. It'd be pretty cool to play both Unreal Tournament and Unreal 2004 on the same machine.
While the ole' G4 hasn't seen much work outside of gaming the past few years, I did make my avatar entirely on it.

I miss "Monkey Shines" for OS 9 but I wouldn't be able to buy it anymore because it's gone forever.

I'm on vacation and brought nothing but my 2005 1.33GHz iBook. Love it. I can surf the web and watch movies just fine. And I still get 5 hour battery life!

What are the specs If you max them out I think there may still be life left in your old machine

It's a 17" 1.25ghz model, USB 2.0 and all that jazz. I up'd it to 2GB of ram and replaced the DVD burner when I got it. The fan is loud so I should probably eBay another one to replace it. Don't know what else I can do without spending much money.

But it can! Here's the converter...

You have to have the updates installed too, there's links to those on that Microsoft page.

Hmmm I might have to try that. See if it screws up any formatting or not.

Converter works

...better than ok. I am using Office X (runs light years faster than 2004 or 2008 on my ibook G4) and so far have had no problems with any of the dozens of pptx files I have to open, edit and use. Make sure you get the latest open xml converter, the older ones don't work anymore. Also, apply all the updates.

Hats off to Microsoft for still supporting their product nearly a decade out.

I was shocked when I found my 466Mhz G4 running Office 2004 faster than a Core Duo iMac runs Office 2008 or 2011

I love power pc macs a lot and I think they are very useful in 2012 , I own a powermac g5 and will be getting a new mini next year . I will use my powermac as a second computer when I get it because they are still great computers even if apple does not think so . That said if you have a mac slower than 1ghz I cannot say they are useful anymore in 2012 , if you have a mac slower than 1ghz they are only really good for music , old classic software and game emulators . If you are on a g3 or a 700-800mhz g4 you really need to upgrade to at least a 1ghz or preferably a g5 to get any good use today in the tech world we live in now .
