I was using my G4 iMac but Word 2008 runs so terribly on it :( So it doesn't get much use anymore. I wish 2004 supported .docx files

I believe there is a plugin you can install. Not entirely sure though as I haven't used Word 2004. But that's how it was on the PC side if I remember correctly.

I like my PowerBook G4 and will continue to use it. I also like my MacBook Air, Windows PC and IBM ThinkPad though as well, and will continue them all.

Well said!

I too love my PowerBook G4 1.67. It maybe somewhat outdated, but for everyday use it does a fine job, especially since my Leopard has been stripped of Intel code.

I am currently uploading all my PowerPC stuff for the repo. Pretty much everything I have was made in the Leopard era and is pretty recent. Some of these latest versions still even work with the G5. It was very enjoyable seeing stuff like Espresso and Acorn work, and heck, Acorn is in the Mac App Store!

After seeing all this stuff working, I feel that PowerPCs, especially the G4s and G5s are overlooked.

Just added some life to my 1.8GHz PowerMac G5 by purchasing a 5-port USB 2.0 PCI card for $8, and a USB Bluetooth dongle for $14 at my local electronic store. Going to buy the older style "fat" Apple wireless keyboard (the one that clicks and clacks loudly :D) and the wireless Mighty mouse pretty soon as well.

I had a USB PCI card in my G5 when I first got it but it had a problem with deep sleep mode, once you woke it up the USB ports were dead, it took a restart to get them going again. Never had this problem with the G4 I have before it.

I have an early 2005 G5 PowerMac, at the time I think it was running Tiger, now on Leopard which I haven't tested as I now used a 7 port USB 2.0 Hub.

I've had some problems with BlueTooth but did get the magic mouse mostly working, couldn't get the touch swipe/scroll to work, even after reading forums and updating the mouse CP.

Right now its sitting in a draw because I got tired of it mocking me on my desk while I wait for my new 2012 iMac, hopefully in a few weeks.

Yes I'm finally turning to the dark side and getting an Intel powered Mac... I feel dirty

Anybody here run Linux on their later Power PC Macs? I know somebody who revived an eMac with Linux and was able to compile the latest version of Mozilla Firefox to run on it, along with other software.

I have :)! I already slightly prefer FVWM over some full DeskTop Environments, so the fact that it runs better makes that great! MintPPC is good if you want more things to work out-of-the-box (Except I never got the original AirPort card to work :( ) and have it be faster. Compared to MacOS X 10.1, LXDE ran surprisingly slower on 366 MHz, except you can see improvements when it comes to web browsing and other tasks. And Midori is amazing and works perfectly with most sites, and it never had a Mac version, sadly (By the way, it displays FaceBook very quickly, and well).

I have just purchased a Sonnet Tempo SATA E4i Card for my DC G5. This compensates the only gripe I have with the G5, lack of internal storage expandability. It's sad however that those cards are still going for 150$+ when the technology itself is 5 years old an costs 20$ in PC cards. I got mine for 60$ so I can't complain, but still...

I recently got one and upgraded it to Leopard, makes it so much more usable. But it doesn't have a built in cam or else my mom could've used it to Skype with me. She's the perfect person to use this, large screen and safe to browse the web even if she stumbles across dubious ones.

I was shocked when I found my 466Mhz G4 running Office 2004 faster than a Core Duo iMac runs Office 2008 or 2011

and you would be even more shocked to find that a 1980s SE/30 (motorola 68030 at 16 MHz) runs Word 5 much faster than a MacPro runs Word 2011...

Word 5 has all the features that 99% of 2011 Office users use...

Unfortunately internet, videos, the cloud thing and music are the main reasons for upgrading, not specific software. Tell me what, for the vast majority of users, cannot be done with a late 1990s-early 2000s setup, i.e. OS 9, Word 98, Photoshop 5, Eudora 6, EndNote 4 and a PowerMac G3.

There are some fields, e.g. video editing, where probably newer machines and newer software means faster workflow, but for the rest of us upgrading is not that necessary.

I test software and write for a magazine so I have many of the most recent stuff, but still like to write my articles on the older stuff.

I still have some PowerPC's chugging along, I'll use them as long as they are useful, after that. They go in the attic lol.

I do like how they are different, and as long as I have a use for them, they'll be in my household

I have an iMacG3 that literally is there solely to play Age Of Empires 2. ( a Microsoft game of all things! ). And a couple old games I love.

Because newer ATi Drivers/Nivida Drivers just don't like the old 3D/2D games, and yeah, I could run it on my old PC tower, but the iMac is just SO much cooler :apple:

Pretty much agree on what you're stating.

I am rocking Appleworks on my quad G5. Simple and lightweight. Opens, saves in a flash.

:D

You know...I actually have an SE/30 with Microsoft Word, but I think it's version 6.

There is one PPC mac i still use every day, my Xserve G4. Love that thing cost me £65 (inc shipping) runs all my public services (2 instances of HTTP, one of FTP, one of wired and one of KDX.) Allong with all my torrent downloads, TM backups and backups of all my xbox games. I'm gonna run that thing untill there is no way i can get spares for it, then i'll get a xserve G5 ;) (I was gonna get a Xserve G5, but i'm 15, so there was no way i could afford one of those)

I ONLY own PPC, 4 of them, TOTAL COST WAS 30 BUCKS!
i use my eMacs as my main machines (1 of them at both my houses), and my Gig ethernets as networked HDs (occasionally ill actually USE them (since one eMac is on OS9 (not enough ram for Tiger)) and i will never give these up! (but then again, im 15, so im a cheapskate!)
you are lucky, it cost me £50 (with shipping) for two disk sleds for my Xserve G4 (bringing the total for it up to £115)

You got an Xserve G4 for £65  ! I spent €180 for my iMac G4! Though it was a good deal considering I live in Ireland, the price of other iMac G4's (some can go over €200!) and it was in mint condition with manuals, iLife, Leopard etc.

First things first I would like to state that I am writing this on a tray loading iMac G3 333Mhz with 160MB ram on OS 9.2 using IE 5 that I'm setting up as my nephews first computer to play all the old school disney and educational games I grew up with on.

I have TWO Mac Pro systems, A Macbook Pro 17'' and my main Desktop is a ratty old stinky Powermac G5!

There's something special about the PPC macs that you don't get that same feeling from using an Intel one, I know it sounds silly but they almost seem to have a bit of a charecter, And for that reason alone when I am done working with power related apps I surf the net on the G5 and listen to music on it, Also have an eMac at work for email, Accounting and hosting my music files too.

So these machines are still useful as long as you can find a use for them, When I can no longer find a use for a PPC Mac that's when I will give up the fight.

PowerPC's rule! As the person above me has said the PowerPC Macs have character and something special about them that other computers don't have, the intel macs come close but their not the same.
