Are the hardware differences between the 7 and 7 Plus significant enough to justify the larger harder to carry size of the 7 Plus? Would the average user notice any significant performance differences between the two in day to day use?

I agree and was debating which to get. However I need to keep the phone in a certain pocket for work and the plus would simply not fit. If not for that, I would have gone for the plus. There is definitely an adjustment period for the Plus variant. But it's truly a better iPhone with more to offer in terms of hardware. I think 5.5 is perfect me. All in my opinion.

I was worried about the plus being too large for the last two years so always ended up with the 4.7" variants. This year I figured I'd try it out and take advantage of that return period if it didn't work out.
I knew before I finished setting up the phone that I had made the right choice. I would have never guessed that the 4.7" could feel too small. I'm 5'10 with pretty average sized hands.

I'm really looking forward to a 5.0 screen. I had the 6+ which I thought was too big and now the 7 feels a tad small so something in the middle sounds great! It's rumored next year, we might see three screen sizes (4.7, 5.0, 5.5) Possibly a 5.0 screen Might be a nice in between for you, if that's true.

two main issues/differences with previous regular size iphone were much worse battery life and no optical image stabilisation.
7 addressed these issues so now it's the same main camera in both and battery life is much better on regular 7.
The main selling point of the 4.7 is the ergonomic size for use. It is still usable with one hand for typing, reaching most of screen comfortably, yet big enough to enjoy media, games, reading without feeling cramped.
To me the SE size feels too cramped, the plus size is too large and 4.7 is ideal. I hope they don't increase the regular one to 5", because that puts it beyond the one hand usability with comfort.
The only issue there is with the 7 is the lower resolution PPI. Apple should have put a 1080p display in the regular 7 this year, which would have upped the PPI to around 450, but I suspect it would have compromised battery life too much.
