Go with the Iphone 4. The 5 won't be that much better. Bigger Screen? Faster CPU? It's the 6 we should want.

Even if you buy an iPhone 4 now, you'll still have to wait 2 years. That makes your upgrade come near the iPhone 7 release. That's thinking too far into the future though ...

I am sort of in the same situation. My phone upgrade with Verizon is on Friday, and I'm looking at possibly making the jump to smartphone. It's not so much locking myself into an unlimited data plan, but wanting the iPhone like now.

I could always use my upgrade for the 4, then sell it once the iPhone 5 comes out and buy it at full price. Not sure. Love the white, though.

In a similar position...

My contract is up and I am itching to get the iPhone 4. I currently have a Droid Eris I bought off ebay and it is kind of a POS. It is doing things like not receiving MMS and it is pretty slow.

Should I go ahead and get the iPhone 4 or wait? I am leaning towards getting it, but I hate hating these sorts of decisions.

Basically, help?

Well I am glad I am not the only one. My upgrade has been good since January. I have been waiting the whole time. But my typical self of wanting something new is kicking in gear hard. Part of me wants to just go get and iphone 4 and be happy with it now. And the other part just keeps thinking i should just wait.

Upgrading now and selling and buying a I5 at full price isn't really something I feel like messing with.

You're kidding right? Every iPhone upgrade is huge, and is much better than the previous.
From your post, you think an iPhone that looks different externally will be a 'big update' only?

Hey guys, i just answered a similar question so i decided to paste the same thing here..

Short answer: Yes, wait.

Long answer: Those are just the given rumors, an 8MP Camera was leaked by Sony and a faster processor is the A5 Dual Core which the iPad 2 already as. I'm sure there are more than that to a 1year+ few months upgrade to the iPhone. Regardless, waiting is worth it.
Obviously you won't get back what your iPhone 4 is worth now, if you buy it. As soon as news breaks out of the iPhone 5, the iPhone 4 price will drop drastically. You'll probably be paying around $100 more for the iPhone 5 this way.
Look at it logically, why would you get locked up in a contract with a phone that's a year old when a new one will be out in 3 months? Also, you'll be stuck in a 2 year contract so you'll be waiting for the iPhone 7. Get your money's worth and wait.

I think the reason that people want to get 'locked up in a contract' is because they want the unlimited data plan. There is lots of talk (we dont need links) of VZW dropping the unlimited data, and possibly dropping it with the iPhone 5 release.

If you wait, then you may miss out on that unlimited data.
If you buy an iPhone 4 for $200 now, get the 2 year contract of unlimited data, and then sell the iPhone 4 on craigslist for a lot more than $200, buy a 5 outright full price, you lose a little cash. (100~200 bucks?)
Well worth it to me to keep unlimited data. I will be signing up with VZW and doing just this in the next couple weeks actually. Plus you get an iPhone right now and get to use it for a couple months.

If you always wait for the next thing, youll always be unhappy and waiting.
Buy now!! Then upgrade!! Buy more!! Buy bigger!! Haha its the way big companies want us to do it anyway.

You could buy an iPhone 4 now and sell it when the iPhone 4S/5 comes out. Prolly lose about $100-200 depending on how much you can sell it for. For a few months of use, and the UL data plan. May be worth it if you think so!

I've always been fascinated when people type "Prolly"

Just what does that mean? It's not a word...

I'm in a similar situation. I can upgrade in the next week and my next phone will be an iPhone (and probably in the next week, barring a surprise from Apple).

My current phone (non-iPhone) is getting painful to use. Right now, I'm planning on upgrading in about a week to an iPhone 4 on VZ with unlimited data.

I'm pretty sure that VZ will drop the unlimited data in time for the next iPhone release. In addition, I would be surprised if you could get upgrade (i.e. discounted) pricing on the next iPhone AND keep unlimited data (VZ will create a way to do this and keep everything legal). (As some have suggested getting a cheap smart phone and waiting.) I believe that if you want to keep the unlimited data, you will have to bring your own phone. Which means you would have to buy the next iPhone at the non-contract price. I could be wrong though.

Personally, the unlimited data might not be important to me, but I won't really know until I use the iPhone for a few months. The unlimited plan will be a good insurance policy to let me know how much data I really use. When the time comes to upgrade, I can do it knowing how much data I use each month with an iPhone. I have a touch screen "dumb phone" now, so I don't think the usage really compares.

Oh I will be waiting for sure. I am to far and I know myself with wanting the latest and greatest. I would be kicking myself if I upgraded now even if it is just a spec bump. My current phone works fine I don't need a new phone at all only want one. So I will be waiting along with others. But still always tempting to cave and buy now.

That's very good advice, and sounds like you have it all worked out. I see myself using more than the 2GB of data, but this way you could always compare it in these few months.

Yes, upgrading now on a nearly year-old phone when a new one will be out in a few months seems like something you shouldn't do ... but it's actually not a bad idea as I thought it once was. Buy it now with unlimited data, get use out of it, and then sell it once the iPhone 5 comes around.
