I’ve been pretty happy with my 7+ but the reason we got on the T-Mobile Jump on Demand program was so we could enjoy a new device every year, for a few more bucks. I’ve only used 43GB of my 128, so the 64GB model should be fine. I think we’ll just wait and see what the payments would change to. The X should be less than +$10/month, the 8+ $7 or $8.

Form factor. Size and quality of the screen. Camera system. Bezels.

Regarding size of screen, see the images on the previous page of this thread. The X technically has a larger display, but the narrower aspect ratio will probably make it feel smaller. The camera difference probably won't matter to someone like me who doesn't do much with my photos except post them on Facebook. The bezels allow for a home button and Touch ID. No arguing the screen quality and form factor though, but does that really make the phone inferior? Ultimately these models will reach obsolescence at the same time. There's almost nothing that the X can do that the 8 Plus can't also do.

Can the iPhone 8 make a talking poo? I think not.

Well, you got me there. The X is definitely light years ahead in talking poop ability. And people say that Apple doesn't innovate anymore.

Both are very similar in specs. But the limited availability makes me wonder how long I’ll have to wait for an iPhone that basically just gives me Face ID and Animoji features
I'm in the same boat and I have a 6+. Really disappointed with the worrying face ID and no Touch ID. And the two ears in landscaping mode (video especially) is annoying. I just installed IOS 11 GM to see if I can stand the lagging on 6+. I might just keep 6+ for another year and get XS/XI.

I'm coming from the 7. Even if what you're saying is true, it'll feel bigger to me, and more to the point I won't have to put up with the ugly bloatedness which is the Plus bezels

That's not relevant to the fact that the X camera is superior to the Plus, objectively speaking.

The bezels allow for a home button and Touch ID.

That they do, absolutely. Is either worth it? The only legitimate use for the home button is Touch ID. We won't know whether Face ID can match it without trying individually, but Apple willingly suffers online ridicule for waiting before introducing tech that's been around for years before just so they can do it better. Their history in this regard makes me think Face ID will be every bit as good as Touch.

Yes.

Yes.

Those are all excellent reasons why the X is a better choice for you. I just wouldn't necessarily call the 8 Plus inferior, or at least not to the extent that most people will find it lacking. It's mostly a matter of how one feels about the older form factor. because as I said, their specs and capabilities are practically the same.

I totally agree. If you're happy enough with the 8+ form factor, don't bother getting the X. There's not enough to make it worth spending $00's more. I couldn't personally live with the Plus and I've been waiting for the year they release a big screen on a small model so this is my year.

These pictures are making me like the plus more. The X isn't showing as much content on the screen.

The picture will be smaller too if you go to watch a video without the notch being in the way. The giant bars around the screen take away a good bit of screen real estate.

After looking at a ton of images online, it just doesn’t seem like iOS 11 is fully baked to take advantage of this new screen real estate and limitations / changes. Maybe in a year it’ll be fully hashed out. . .

I'm in the same boat, but I'm leaning 8+ as of right now. I'm comparing getting the X to buying a brand new generation 1st model year car, you can bet there will be issues and kinks to be ironed out in the 2nd model year. But for the 8 and 8+ it's more like buying a mid cycle refreshed model year car, with prior kinks already been worked out, plus added some new features.

What exactly is inferior? Their internals are the same and many people, like myself, prefer having a home button and TouchID, not to mention longer battery life, and a display that may technically be smaller, but will actually likely seem larger because it's less narrow. Even if they were the same price I would still find it a tough choice.

That's kind of where I was. The 8 seems like a great phone. Especially considering there's a $200 price difference between the 8 Plus I'd buy and the X I'd buy. But... I kept my 6 Plus for three years. Those bezels are just killing it for me. I'm used to them now but am I going to be ok with them in 2020? Highly doubtful. At some point I'm going to regret buying the 8 Plus and it probably won't take long, my guess is on November 3rd. :p

I really wish Apple would have minimized the top and side bezels on the 8 (similar to the X) and kept the bottom the same to accommodate the home button. That would have been OK in my book.

So I'm going to spring for the X. Assuming I can get it in a reasonable time, if not then I may end up going with the 8 Plus.

I wonder how long it will take third party developers, that already implement Touch ID, to support Face ID.

I worry re the X how it comes out in November (if you are lucky as supply will be tight). I think over next year they will ramp up the OLED supply and next year be back to the September release cycle, so will only be latest phone for 9 months before being replaced - kinda like the iPad 3.

I was also thinking of joining the upgrade program, I I don’t want to be on that starting in November as in future years I will always have to wait a couple of months after device is launched to upgrade (you need 12mths of payments) I think that next years version of the X will have any issues ironed out and better face ID etc, Apple might even have figured out how to have touch ID under the screen.

When looking at a comparison, the spec difference between 8 and X is not much, apart from form factor/screen and a few minor differences, i.e. animoji which I personally wouldn’t use.

So thinking of passing my 7 to my wife (retiring her 6) and then getting the iPhone 8+. Note to me its not about the money, I can afford either.

Never mind 9 months I worry about if they're gonna release an X2 in June and move iPhone releases back to the OG days.

2016->2017 MacBook pros Happened seemingly overnight

Can't trust or assume apple's schedule anymore at all

Custy up and get the X, if you don’t you’ll be stuck with the inferior phone and regret it all year.

Not arguing with you but it kind of depends on how you define inferior. I wouldn’t personally call the 8 Plus inferior to the X as I wouldn’t call the 7/8 inferior to the 7/8 plus.

If by inferior, you mean less expensive then yes. Otherwise, as with the iPhone 7 Plus where to date I only took 26 portraits since purchasing almost a year ago. Depending on the user, the feature that separates the devices may not even get used much.

If you want to settle on the other hand due to limited availability, then no. Just wait till you can buy what you really want.

There are always other considerations aside from size tho:

Ram differences, 326 vs 401 ppi, single or dual cam, and battery life

If there was parity between the two, size aside, I’d agree. Like 10.5 and 12.9 iPad Pro’s now

I believe it’s 11 months payments before upgrade

Depends on what you're coming from and what you're looking for.
For anybody with a 6S and up, I would say wait till next year. Then you can expect all the features of the X trickle down to the iPhone "9"

For 6/6+ owners, depends on how much you can spend. If the X price is still within the budget, then I would say go for the X. Then again if you want the tried and true Touch ID, the 8 is the obvious choice.
