IT LIVES!!!! Are you going to remove the guts of the imac? Or just work around them?

i will be removing the main board only, everything else will be original. lots of cable work required to use the original PSU, power button, speakers, crt etc. but the dvd drive i fitted will work with this system once i have fitted the following;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220865089434?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

this requires a floppy connector, and the hard drive requires a sata power. so i have ordered this to modify with a data plug

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220865089...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_3710wt_1165

that will allow me to use original hard drive and cd locations too. so yeah basically its looking good. but i wont start modifying until i have an OS X desktop on the iMac crt... looks like I'm a way from that yet lol

Well the hard drive turned up, but I've been on with it since 11am (now 3:20) and i can't get the bluddy thing to get to the installer screen like i did yesterday :-S

nightmare!

its now 8:48pm and I've still not got it running :-( only thing i can think of is that the modified atom stuff is for 10.7.0 and because I'm using 10.7.3 its causing errors. so I've had to find a torrent to download it and i don't like doing that but i have no other choice atm.

Arkious, a different version will definitely give you issue. What happened to the stuff you were working with!?

From what I've experienced in the past, using Snow Leopard first is probably going to be the easiest. I think 10.6.3 is the first/easiest OS to install on these sort of builds, then work from there.

Well I downloaded 10.7.0 last night so that will be my starting point this morning, but what other stuff buddy?

Yeah I can imagine it is as snow leopard still supported the atom. But my problem is the lack of a DVD rom drive ATM. I dont have the necessary bits just yet. But since I got a hold of 10.7.0 al try that 1st

well i still don't get how i got it up the 1st time... but anyways 10.7.0 works :)

feels like yesterday was such a waste :-( but i learnt a lot and therefor it wasn't! :-D

I have a few other bits to do today so don't know what i will get done but tbh al be happy when i see the desktop and dock on my screen! haha

btw i ordered a real DB-15 connector for the monitor, that way i can prove my cable works or doesn't work. if it works al resell it and if it don't then al keep that one in place of my cable

ohh bluddy heck! it stopped at 18mins! well i suppose the good thing is i now know the BIOS settings are correct so I'm going to try a 10.7.3 one again and see how that gets on

i got stressed today as i can not get this thing to boot properly and no one on tonymacx86 is getting back to me so i destressed and made the picture for "about this mac" i used the higher resolution version of the one below;

Apple%2BIMAC%2BG3.jpg

Wow! I love restorations of old computers, and this is looking amazing!! Reminds me a lot of a car restoration.

Wish I was able to restore my old Power Mac to something like this.

Arkious,
How'd you changed the dock in 10.3 and was it usable or did it consume a lot of resources?

you should do, the power mac would be so much easier! and yeah its the nerdy version ;) but i dont care hahaha

Well, I know you had it running, but what has changed since you did that? I thought you started with 10.7.3?

Well ive had it up to the installer but not past, so i dont know at the moment tbh. but ive left it for the time being as im at work for 2 days then away for 2 then al have another crack on haha. im going to settle for Snow Leopard for the time being until i can get my knowledge of how all this stuff works. Because the atom isnt supported any more i think im trying to run before i can walk. (snow leopard is a jump from os 8.6 it came with ;) lol

it was usable untill i fully updated the OS. then it became laggy. but that is because i was reduced to 182mb of ram, but it works brilliantly.

it is mentioned earlier in this post, but skinniezinho has provided some very good infomation for PPC's. I followed a few of these bits of info and how to patch the dock etc;

Sounds good, Snow Leopard is my OS of choice. All Lion is, is Snow Leopard with a few tweaks. You won't miss it.

Yeah they are almost the same but I do like the likes of launch pad etc but it's going to be my main computer as its still not going to be the b's nd e's but it will be useable for everything again :) I'm lookin forward to trying all sorts with it lol.

If only I had a USB version of snow leopard lol

If you are going to use the iMac as your main computer you may want to buy a spare flyback transformer as they will probably be very hard to find in a few years. You can put Snow Leopard on a USB Flash drive:D Link: http://www.maciverse.com/install-os-x-snow-leopard-from-usb-flash-drive.html

Keep us updated on your progress:D

Sorry there was supposed to be a 'not' in there. But it will end up being used more like it used to be. Ahh nice one! I will have a read when I get time at dinner, thanks for that info :)

I would, if I had the money :)

It would be a real beast too 1.5 GB RAM, superfast G4, power ATI Radeon…one day…

I like the progress on the iMac...
