I use the display with my PowerBook G3 as a spare computer, and the second I saw that picture, I just thought, "So what? It's a 15 inch studio display box. Duh." I guess if you hadn't seen one before (yeah 1998 is sooo long ago) that you might guess it is a new iMac... or not.

hm here in one of the shops where they are selling apple products they still have them for sale inlcuding apple CRTs ..i saw a whole pile of them in the store unopened...i guess they didn't sold very well when they were new (but they hadn't any laptops around except those from the employees... they even had sold the showroom ones)

Yeah I saw those on TV and thought it was a Mac - then I kept looking and I became very confused because I definitely thought it looked VERY Apple-like.

The paris boxes look like the old Apple LCD displays, they might need them for some office guy with a computer i dunno :p

And the first pics are fake to me - looks too "odd".

Can't wait till the 31st.

iMac

The first set of pictures of probably fake. If it were so easy to get a hold of an Apple product, the G5 towers would have been all over prior to last year.

The second set of photos are not fakes, they just aren't the iMac.
Think about where that iMac box is. On the bottom of a bunch of other crap. I can't speak for certain, but I'm sure Apple has some sort of protocol for storage of upcoming products before a trade show.

/Curious, but not convinced

Yeah sounds like everybody's having a ball with those pics. :p

You can almost always tell when people make fakes of new Apple products yet to be released. Because they take pictures from extremely odd angles, with bad lighting, and you can only get "some" of the details in. Usually the main thing is that they show the Apple logo, humors me every time.

I don't like what they did to the iPod at all for 4G. I looked at one the other day, and I have to say that it doesn't have Apple class. However, I love the new features...

The new iPod:

a) Looks almost exactly like every past iPod

b) Is visually (and functionally) simpler/less cluttered

c) Makes the wheel stand out more--a visual balance for the screen, and excellent branding too

It has more Apple class than any previous iPod other than the Mini, to my mind :)

No need for everyone to like exactly what I like, though... and change of ANY kind is often hard to accept (at first). (People HATED the 3G iPod at first--or so you'd think from forum postings.)

Arn, Mudbug, et al.,

Could someone please update the Page 2 blurb so that it reflects the fact that these photos have been completely debunked as fakes?

I'm really getting tired of people not reading the thread, but happily posting away with these "the photoshop 'gurus' are wrong" posts.

The photos are fake, the hoax is lame and the iMac will be unveiled on Tuesday and will not look like a ViewSonic flat panel. Period

I agree that they are fake. It is still fun for everyone to speculate. That is what makes MacRumors tick. We only have 2 days until the question will be answered. Then it will be on to the next item.

I don't know if in all the hundreds of posts someone said this already, but if that is the apple logo at the top of the screen, then the box with the apple logo is upside down and when stored upright, the thing inside would have the potential to fall forward and out.

That just doesn't seem right.

looks like my 12" powerbook box.

Hello Wake up its a powerbook box..count the dots on the floor and do the ath on average the dots are 1" ... the packing foam is too big to fit in that box..packing foam does not match the curves of the product itself..did not see any or enough heat vents, also where is the white plastic which would surround product
No user books or Cd packs, If any one can go check or call and ask about the elevators, I bet the rubber floor wouldnt mach the dot pattern.
One Great thing about iMacs is the swinging screen.
also why would frieght have to move to another floor. airplane to truck. customs checks occur on site..
I know the new one is gonna rock the industry again

Whom ever did this leak gets vote of great hoaxs.. right up there with MS Longhorn hehheh
oh by the way, I will buy it when I can

its just a cinema display

It's much too thick to be a cinema display, and doesn't have white sides like the cinema displays.

I think this is just the 17 inch cinema display thats missing from the lineup.
and yes, if you've seen the new displays in the stores, it looks like that.

As has been mentioned many times before, it is not a cinema display because it's too thick, and because it's a LaCie monitor. End of story, not an iMac or even an Apple product.

Comments on the pictures

First of all, that box looks too skinny to hold a keyboard and mouse *on top of* the screen part shown in the pictures. And the keyboard are always on top.

Secondly, in that 3rd picture, it looks like the logo is off center. Its too far to the left...if anything it should look slightly to the right due to the parallax.

HOWEVER, if the new iMac looks anything like this and has a G5 inside, I might have an accident in my pants :).

Sorry, got gross there. Anyways, point being with a display that big and G5 inside, my next computer might even by an iMac, which is saying something since I consider myself kind of a "pro" user. The really cool thing about a form factor like that is that its zero footprint if you can hang it on a wall, and put the keyboard and mouse on a pull out drawer. When the screen saver goes on, it looks like a painting over the desk. I would pay over $2000 for such a machine.

More likely than not, these photos are of a 30" display and have been photoshopped to look a little different to be passed off as iMacs.

Man I love the hysteria!

Remember how Time leaked the original iMac about 10 hours early? I saw the issue on the stands at the airport the night before it came out. I will be making a trip to CVS to see if the same happens again :D

[Edit] OKay, it pays to read the posts before adding...sorry all :)

Wasteland?

Attention #1: The monitor-looking thing in the Powerbook box is a (LaCie, as several have mentioned) monitor in a -- you guessed it -- Powerbook box. The person responsible for it has already claimed that it was a prank.

Attention #2: The picture of the box has been verified by another poster to be an old Apple LCD.

Nothing to see here, I guess.

I'm not here to say if it's fake or not, cause either way I don't really care. A computer's a computer. It's what's inside that counts.

I do have two questions though.

1) For major computer announcements, isn't there typically a month or so gap between the announcement and actual shipping of the product? If this is the new iMac it's kinda early to have such a finalized-looking box, isn't it?

Lately, yes. But it wasn't always the case that Apple was supply-constrained in so many of its product lines. In the past, Steve would often say at his keynotes "...and its available starting today on the Apple store."

In fact, since IBM is having yield problems with high-end G5s, maybe they have a lot of G5s which are rated for like 1.4-1.6 Ghz which have no use...until a G5 imac?

2) Shouldn't be Apple be much more secretive about this sort of thing? Locks, bolts, armed guards, cyanide coating, etc? I thought Apple would be much more cafeful about this sort of thing, rather than, "Hey, Joe Blow, go bring this up to the show floor!"

I'm very curious about this. I wonder how the new products get to the expo, who carries them, who sets them up.

I believe pallets are pretty much standard -- as are the 'default' width of forks on a small warehouse-type forklift. I suppose I went a bit overboard with the use of the word 'huge' but it still looks bigger than my 17" iMac box. Wouldn't that monitor box be considerably smaller?

Squire

There are actually 2 sizes of pallets. One is wide enough to fit only 2 across in a standard shipping container. The other is just narrow enough to fit three across. I used to work in a warehouse, and different factories like different things...that might account for the discrepancy?

I'm not surprised this was a hoax. Now this weeks announcement has really got me wondering about the new G5 iMac.

It's curious what lengths people will go to for attention. He definately got his fix.

Funny you mention that. I walked over one of the little pallets last night. Oh well. I've been wrong lots of times before. ;)
