How on earth can they not have all the models ready to purchase now? Why are there all these delays at apple?

Probably ramping up component availability. They have custom Intel Xeon-Ws configurations (which I don't believe are shipping in any computer as of now) and also Vega GPUs are still in scarce supply. Would be awkward if they release it now, but sell them out within first hour.

Stopped reading right there.
I know the feeling.

HP expressly states that changing the RAM and other user-replaceable parts does not void the warranty.
Awesome. Doesn't change the particular constraints that our own corporate support team puts on us at my company. They can't have every Tom, Dick and Barry running around changing RAM.

Sounds like you need to run right out and buy yourself an HP Z. Believe me, no one is trying to stop you.

Great. Here comes the next wave of non-applicable comments. It would be nice to have a meaningful discussion on the new iMac Pro...

Why don't you start? What about an overpriced machine do you want to talk about? I don't mind having a meaningful discussion about this new "pro" machine, but really, what makes these ridiculously expensive machines ridiculously expensive ... I'm all ears.

£5000 for a machine where you can't upgrade the RAM.

My.
Sides.
[doublepost=1513103096][/doublepost]Sooo.... on a completely unrelated note, the base model HP Z6 comes with a 10 core Xeon, 48gb RAM and an 8gb Nvidia Quadro for under £3500.

And you can put in another CPU if you want.
And you can expand it to terrabytes worth of RAM.
And it is probably the most expandable ready-built PC that has ever been made.
And it looks nice.

But I know - all this is as nothing to whatever cute new little feature macOS will give you next.

It's a goddamn joke is what it is.

Whoa, Z6 is definitely very customizable. Just priced one out with dual 24-core processors, 384GB RAM, 14TB SSD storage, and a single nVidia Quadro P6000 with 24GB VRAM for $43,000.

Like the article said: "...up to 4TB of SSD storage, up to 128GB of ECC RAM, and up to an AMD Radeon Pro Vega 64 graphics processor with 16GB of HBM2 memory." That with 8-18 cores and plenty of fast i/o ports sounds pro to me.

The downside is that it is AIO form, but AIO is a choice one many folks like.

More available cores is nice, but like you, this all-in-one format doesn't bode well for it being a "pro". I don't know about having fast ports, those ports exist even on lower-end machines. I guess it can be considered one if it used by "pros" in their workplace.

Although, one can easily get the 4TB of SSD in an external format, maybe a better choice for pro use.

A pro model that cannot be upgraded by the user after it is purchased?
Pros don’t bust open their computer, put in random parts and void their warranty. They buy the config (with AppleCare) that they’ll need for the next two or three years and replace it then.

The few hundred tax deductible bucks a month it costs to cover the machine is probably covered by their first billable hour.

It’s quite possible (and likely) that the iMac Pro is not something you need, therefore it appears overpriced to you, but it is not. It is directly comparable to the cost of the components alone if you were to buy them today.

For those of us who need this type of machine to do our work today, it is a very good value. I work deeply in multi-cam 4K 60fps projects and occasionally with Red 8K footage. I am always on a tight timeline and 2 hrs saved in a day in the editing room is a huge boon for me. This doesn’t make me special (if people only knew)...it just means that the iMac Pro is right for me and a lot of others at this point in time. Again, your needs are obviously different and that’s ok, but the iMac Pro is not overpriced for what you get.

Everyone needs to buy the right tool for the job.

So true! People roasted me for buying a 2013 12 core MP. It wasn't cheap. I did balk. But it was paid for in a year and I still made money off it for years after. Hands down one of the best business decisions I ever made.

Plus, Macs keep their value - I know I could still sell it for a good enough penny.

I won't though - I've since retired from that business, but still use the MP for my own photos/videos projects.
Still runs smooth as glass.

Someday maybe I'll get the new iMac Pro - it looks sweet.

But you're right - those who need it will buy it. It's like a truck for hauling stuff - you could buy a small truck and maybe get away with it, but if you're hauling big equipment and/or need the power, buy the right truck.

And many fools will be parted with their money only to not have an updated model until a decade later
I think this machine is so much more welcome than all their last 4 gens. of iPhone Gadgets.

This machine is a serious piece of work created by artisans. Why moan over something wonderful for a change..
Normally this site is full of childish iOS BS that no one really needs aside from shooting a dumb selfie and communicate with virtual friends on FB...

Great Work Apple... You heard those creating serious content with a Computer and stopped us from taking the absurd Windows route !!!!

It’s rather simple, really. People who are target customers of such computer generate about enough income to cover its cost in a month or two, maybe less. You probably don’t belong to this category, hence your difficulty in understanding it’s purpose or it’s value.

Ok, lets put a stop to the lies being spread, at least in the us. It’s illegal to void a warranty because of a part upgrade. Of course the part you put in will be warrantied by the manufacturer of the part. You do NOT in any way void the warranty. Not commenting on the computers themselves, just the lie that keeps being regurgitated.

This applies to anything that costs over 15.00 with a warranty.

btw, anyone knows what kind/type/model of xeon being used in this iMac Pro?

edit : finally get information from quick searching : demo model 10 core using W-2155 (LGA2066) Skylake-SP

Probably other model would be like this :
8 Core → Xeon W-2145, 3.7 - 4.5 GHz
18 Core Xeon W-2195, 2.3 GHz - 4.3 GHz

But i must admit it this machine put shame all my workstation, my 12 core mid 2012 and even my fastest hackintosh looks powerless.

Another good things is display, custom secure enclave hardware, and price, but still can't upgrade parts is biggest hindrance iMac Pro and clearly not on my radar. For people who's need upgradeable components, let's wait for true Mac Pro, since i think this iMac Pro just a product to filling gap/buying time for prosumer when Apple still creating new Mac Pro.

edit again : this machine is also bring good news for hackintosh folks for better hardware support and native configuration, even Vega 64 GPU OOTB now. (please don't bring hackintosh vs genuine mac here), I'm just excited what's merit can be used from this iMac Pro.

Looking forward to this. I skipped the trashcan - needed a computer in 2016 and I refused to pay 2016 money for 2013 components. I'd pick up an iMac Pro for my next computer - as long as they don't (again) wait 4 years between update cycles.

Gee, it's such a great design, you still have to stick something under it to get the height right.

The 12 South stand is better than the usual stack of books employed by most iMac users I know, but can't "Jony T-Shirt" figure this out?

Found out that 2.1 HDMI is backward compatible but offers a whooping of 48Gbps if you buy new cables that support the jump from HDMI 2.0s 18Gbps. That is 30GBp more and is aimed square at streaming 8K content and for gamers. Just need a new cable!

I can see this falling off the stand for a VFX-Pro under deadline. Is the screen with a big boot print covered? Lack of flexible configuration makes this a regrettable pass!
