Interesting news, but why can't they work on more than one iMac at a time ?

If Apple is at all like the engineering/manufacturing companies I have worked for, they are working on more than one iMac at a time. But working to coordinate and align all the engineering and manufacturing projects to land multiple products in a single month or even quarter is not nearly as efficient as driving each one home on it's own timeline.

No one would want to delay the current M1 iMac for months for the sake of releasing it in unison with the iMac Pro.

Mark my words. It’ll be a 5.5K 29.5” display (rounded up to 30” for marketing).

Apple are masters at segmenting a product line. They won’t go 32” to encroach on XDR territory.
I think Apple price drops the 32” by $1-2k in the next few months.

Apple in 2021 - 2022:

‘Only pros get black bezels’.

The "white bezel" / "black bezel" divide between the MacBook and MacBook Pro was right out of Steve Job's playbook, best seen in the 2010 MB/MBP releases.

I knew many people who went with the entry level MBP over the white MB just for the looks. In the mean time, the substantially cheaper white MB was derided. 10 years later and it's clear that the white bezeled MB was nearly as capable as the MBP.

this will be a great imac. Nothing surprising though given the macbooks that have just been released. I would be v surprised to see a notch since the 24” doesnt have or need one.

Just a bit disappointed it’ll be 27” again and not 30/32”.

Would surprise me greatly if the larger iMac doesn’t come in both of those sizes.
I also hope that same sizes are released in standalone consumer screens. It’s about time Apple do that.

The next-generation iMac that's in the works could be called the "iMac Pro," according to leaker Dylandkt. The device will feature the same M1 Pro and M1 Max chips that Apple introduced with the MacBook Pro models, and there could possibly be "an added configuration."

2020-iMac-Mockup-Feature-27-inch-text.jpg

Apple is said to be using the "Pro" naming to differentiate the upcoming iMac from the 24-inch iMac that was released earlier this year. As it will use the M1 Pro and Max chips, Apple considers it a "Pro" device and is calling it the iMac Pro internally, according to Dylandkt

The leaker claims that the iMac will feature a 27-inch mini-LED display with ProMotion technology, though some prior rumors have indicated that the next-generation iMac will have a larger display. Unlike the 24-inch iMac, the "iMac Pro" will feature dark bezels, and bezel size could be slimmed down.

Design wise, it could look similar to the 24-inch iMac and the Pro Display XDR, and Apple has apparently tested Face ID for the machine, but this is not a confirmed feature.

The base model iMac will feature 16GB memory and 512GB of storage, and all models will be equipped with an HDMI port, an SD card slot, and several USB-C/Thunderbolt ports, similar to the MacBook Pro. Apple is also said to be including an Ethernet port on the power adapter.

Dylandkt says that the iMac will have a starting price at or over $2,000, and it will be launching in the first half of 2022. The upcoming "iMac Pro" will replace the current Intel-based 27-inch iMac models.

We haven't heard much about Apple's larger iMac, but Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has confirmed that such a machine is in the works. Apple reportedly paused work on the bigger iMac to work on the 24-inch model, but now that the 24-inch iMac is out, development can resume.

Display analyst Ross Young has also said that Apple is working on a new 27-inch iMac with a mini-LED display and ProMotion display technology.

not a good new! I hope this is fake news's usual.... why people should buy a iMac M1 pro maybe a M2 yes!

No, no it's not.

Er, yes it is. Pro photographers shoot RAW and file sizes are massive. Pro video editors definitely need more RAM and storage, so do 3D artists, or people working in CAD, and I assume musicians trying to squeeze hundreds of effects into their multi-track sequences.

Get real: it's 2021. Those base levels of storage are, as I said, pathetic. It's like a laptop from the last decade.
Are you implying there aren't photographers that can work with only 16GB memory?

How did photographers work for years with much less?

If it has video in/works as a laptop dock I'm all in, I need to use a separate laptop for work and I want to use that monitor with it. Otherwise I'll just have to get a new Mac Mini and keep using an external monitor

I hope they do more than 4 ports unless there is some technical reason. A large iMac should have 4 ports on each side of the monitor I'd think for a Pro version. Less need for a USB hub. They don't all have to be Thunderbolt ports but maybe 4 Thunderbolt and 4 USB 3.

Why not just two sizes of the "pro" iMac? 27" and 32" just like the two sizes of "pro MacBook Pro"?

File sizes were much smaller for one thing.
No, they weren't. Pros were using 33-50mp Medium Format cameras back then. I used 33 megapixel Leaf AFi on my 16GB laptops.

In fact, they were bigger files back then, due to being 16-bit raw, instead of the 12-14 bit compressed raw files you have now.

I don’t particularly need a 27”, but do only want an iMac that has Apple silicon for future proofing.

So getting the 24” M1 with 16Gb RAM, 512Gb SSD that I’d want for future proofing as keep a long time, is £1849.

If this reported base 27” is around £1500 ($2000), with 16Gb RAM and 512 SSD, it would make it cheaper than the 24”, doesn’t make sense.

I know there is never a “good” time to buy, and always something better/faster around the corner, but I was hoping the desktop iMac would get the M1X/Pro/Max so I’m not sure now whether to get the M1 version.

I know the M1 is really good, fast etc, I’m no power user, but will be keeping this for a long time.

Your last sentence answers your question?. I’m hoping they do offer it as a stand-alone display though, so it’s useful with MBP; iMac; Mini; MiniPro/Cube and MacPro.
Like I said, I don't count the 32 inch XDR since it is so widely expensive. Sell me something in the 30-32 inch range for 2k-3k. Much more reasonable.

This - I think a 30 inch would be the ultimate sweet spot.

I hope it accepts video signals so that we can use the iMac screen as monitor.
This would be appreciated by many people currently working from home and using Windows laptops.
I can't argue against that, but what would motivate Apple to do that? I don't see that happening

I think it will be 30”. Just as the 21.5” went to 24”, the 27” will go to 30”. Keeps the size difference about the same. This allows Apple to keep the 32” Pro XDR display for the Mac Pro.

what's the point of HDMI? how many really use a second monitor with an iMac 27? sure there are some but certainly not the majority ...
and 27 would be a disappointment, would have expected 30 ...
Yeah the HDMI port makes me seriously question the validity of this rumour. Has an iMac ever had a dedicated video output?

Would make much more sense to have an additional Thunderbolt 4 port that can be easily used with a TB display or any other kind with a cheap cable/adaptor.

Also agree about bumping the size, considering basically all their machines have gotten a screen size bump over the past few years (16-inch MBP, 14-inch MBP, small iMac, iPads, iPhones) it would be odd for the larger iMac to continue on without at least an extra inch or so of display size, especially if they are slimming the bezels. You could easily make the iMac 2 inches larger without increasing the size of the machine.
