Do you mean Apple customers in general or here in the the MR Forum (definitely not typical customers)?

Apple customers seem to prefer the convenience of an all-in-one package. IMac sales are much larger than mini sales.

A lot of people here would prefer a high performance mini with a well built and quality monitor. The problem is that there hasn’t been the right monitor available so far. You need to compromise on smaller than 27” 4K, larger 4K with less than “retina” resolution, Ultra-wides with low resolution, or high-end professional-only like the XDR.

I understand the people who say that Apple has looked at the monitor market and seen that they can’t make the margin or volume that they want to make it a profitable stand-alone product. I do think that they can enhance the experience and value of their other products (Mini, Laptop, and even iMac) by bringing out an Apple-level quality monitor to occupy the role that the old Thunderbolt monitor held. That monitor gave Apple customers a seamless experience even if the Thunderbolt monitor was never a significant profit center for Apple. It is a more strategic product than a pure financial one.
But then that would cannibalize iMac sales, no?

any more news/leaks about iMac 27/32 pro??

Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted over the weekend that no iMac Pro in 2022. Same with Mac Pro.

So if we do get an iMac on Tuesday, it will be the Apple Silicon version of the iMac 5K with the current edge-lit panel and M1 Pro and M1 Max options and up to 64GB RAM and 8TB SSD.

I still think Apple will announce an iMac Pro at WWDC, but this model will now be much more like the Intel iMac Pro - M1 Max Duo / Quadro, 128GB and 256GB RAM options, the 27" MiniLED ProMotion display Ross Young leaked and a starting price much closer to $5000 than $2000.

TBH, I think a M1 Pro/Max 27" iMac is the iMac that most people want.

I doubt a lot of people are waiting for the potential M1 Max Duo/Quadro for the performance.

I agree here. That would be the big seller.

I'm guessing the Pro/Max chip iMac version of it might be named 'iMac Pro' as the MacBooks with those chips are 'Pro' as well, and then it could potentially have an upgrade option to Duo/Quadro version of the chip if it has adequate cooling. I'm kind of doubting we're going to see an iMac Pro along the lines of the previous one, aside from potentially having a version of chip option beyond the base Pro/Max.

The bigger question, I think, is if there will be a 27" iMac with the base M1. I kind of doubt it. I think the iMac Pro, as a Mac Pro in an iMac chassis, was a one-off that is done, even if they recycle the name.

A 27” iMac with M1/M2 would be a very desirable computer for a lot of people who want a large screen but don’t need the performance and cost of those Pro/Max chips.

I’m not so sure about that. Apparently Apple “underestimated” demand for 16” M1Max 10/32 64RAM MBP…It seems if price is reasonable, Pro’s will tend to opt for higher specs considering the upgrade restrictions inherent to SoC unified architecture. So 6k US$ 27” iMac dual SoC would be attractive to “not so neglectible” few people.

With today’s event, Apple released the Mac Studio and said that there was only one more product left to update to Apple Silicon, the Mac Pro.

Missing in that statement, any mention of a larger iMac. Are they going to drop the larger iMac or will it just go into maintenance mode until they are ready to launch a new iMac Pro next year? Really strange.

The larger iMac is gone from Apple website. So for now there will be no larger iMac. If there will ever be one it will take a while. And by while I mean years.

Yeah likely 2023 now per Kuo.

And I predict M1 Max and M1 Ultra only. Add in the 27" 5K ProMotion Mini-LED display Young said it will have an I expect at minimum a $4000 base price.

My guess, is that maybe we'll see an iMac with bigger screen at some point... more as a BTO option, kind of like the 14" or 16" MBP... pick your size.

Maybe they'll allow a Pro chip, if the cooling can handle it. I kind of doubt, given the Studio, that we're going to see an iMac Pro anymore (with Max/Ultra). They *could* do it, but they'd have to go more to the case design of the previous iMac Pro or a thicker version of the current iMac. Would they do that?

They created a new and much more effective cooling system for the 2017 iMac Pro and that model's Xeons and Vega Pros generated a fair bit more heat than the M1 Ultra does.

I think Apple can develop an effective cooling system for a 27" class iMac while still keeping it relatively thin. It might even look like the 2017 model with a central "bulge" to handle the cooling and then tapers out towards the edges.

Sell it as nostalgia for the now-discontinued 27" iMac. :p

If they can cool the M1 Max in a 14" MBP they should be able to do so in a larger iMac. They should be able to even do the M1 Ultra if they want to. Obviously it would not be as slim as a 24" iMac but it might be in the range of the thickness of a MBP and that would still be slimmer than the current 27" iMac.

This does play in to the rumors of a new iMac Pro next year. it's unclear if they will use that Pro designation only for a high end model as in the old line or that Pro will be any of the larger iMacs more like the MBP line.

Yeah, they could do it. I think it would be next to impossible with the current thickness. They could put the stuff into the original iMac Pro design, but I just don't see Apple doing that. I wonder how much they'd have to increase the thickness of the 24" iMac.

Well, they can't cool the Max in the 14". They run the GPU at lower speeds, so when you go from Pro to Max, you only gain a small amount of performance in the 14".

Whatever the case, they don't seem to consider the iMac Pro a machine in the lineup needing to be updated to consider their transition complete (they said only the Mac Pro remains). But, that doesn't mean they can't make a true iMac Pro in the future. Yes, if they use the old design, or thicken it up to MBP type dimensions, they could easily cool it, probably even for the Ultra (or possibly more).

So, I guess I wouldn't totally rule it out, you might just have to wait until 2023+.

Agreed - - I just did a quickie search to do a "what if?" iMac 27" build versus the Studio w/27" display, and with Apple's BTO apparently gone, found a 'good enough' alternative at Adorama's website.

In a fast / glossed-over quick look:

27" iMac (i9, 32GB, 512GB, base GPU; 1Gbit Ethernet) = $3200 MSRP

27" 5K Studio Display & M1 Max Studio = $3600 MSRP

IIRC, the 10Gb Ethernet option was +$100, so that's probably more like $3300 vs $3600 comparison, and since the Studio reportedly is benchmarking much higher than the i9, its arguably the better value to pick between these two as of today.

As such, I'd venture to speculate that the puck vector that Apple is seeing is that their customer market for the 27" iMac has enough "higher end" customers who are willing to pay for a Studio M1 Max and one, probably two 27" Studio Display monitors that that's a more profitable path than an improved 27" M-based iMac for at least the near term...

...plus this will give a hardware bridge and a "nudge" for the high end Mac Pro market suppliers to accelerate their software support transition plans to move from Intel to Apple M silicone...

PS:

Oh, and if it hasn't already been said by someone else first ... "xMac"! <g>

All good points.

Just a quick question. How does the ne monitor connect up with the new desk studio?

Cable?

Just before I get out the plastic, are the guru s saying that the 27 in all in one is dead, and nothing in June or September or beyond?

Do we know or will that be a certainty?

It has been removed from Apples site. Yesterday, Apple said that only one model remained to be migrated to Apple Silicon, the Mac Pro. That suggests no more iMac, at least this year. There is a rumor saying that an “iMac Pro” will come out in 2023, so there might be some hope next year for those of the AIO persuasion. In the meantime, you can look at the Mac Studio with M1 Max or cross your fingers for an update to the Mini to fit with a Studio monitor to get you to a similar place.

Ok. Thanks for your view.

Think I might press the order button now for the Studio and M1 max. Might upgrade the drive to 1 terabyte though
Yeah, I did the same. I waited long enough and I can use the Display with my work MacBook Pro, too, so the Studio even has a benefit over an iMac for me.

Now being reported mac mini with a 12 core M2 chip out soon. Is this what was mentioned to be the final machine?

If so will it be more powerful and expensive?

Will it be a better option potentially than the lower end Studio? If so why, and why have 2 similar machines?
