From reading this thread it really sucks for the folks who purchased a pre-configured model on release and also given what folks are saying here that MicroCenter is definitely selling these things in decent numbers I somewhat suspect or guess that it could be Scalpers buying this looking to make a $500 profit or maybe a few dollars shy if they sold it on eBay due to fees. So if this is in fact the case its highly likely that these scalpers have the large sum of cash to put out all at once for a pretty decent turn around in profit.

Heck if you did sell it and made a profit of $500 all you would need to do is buy two and that would be a $1000, and if being sold on eBay after fees maybe $700 ish or so? Wish I had a MicroCenter where I'm at as I'd pickup two just for that purpose.

Doubtful you can make any money reselling via eBay. Assume you list it BIN @ $4800 to undercut MSRP just a bit. Your eBay and PP fees will add up to ~ $600. Assume you paid tax on the $3999, you're selling at loss or nearly. Even if you bump up your BIN price to $4900, that's a lot of work/risk, just to clear (maybe) $100.

Thats not a good sign. All signs point to the iMac pro being a bust!
What are the signs other than a singe vendor with a small amount of stock putting them on sale for publicity?

Remember when, I think it was Marshalls or Home Goods or someone was selling iPads for $399 several years back? It wasn't a sign that iPads were a bust. It was a publicity move and a loss leader (they purchased the iPads themselves for retail and just took the $100 loss).

If anything, the worst thing happening to the iMac Pro is the knowledge that a new Mac Pro will be out sometime this year. I'm guessing it will also start at $3999 to $4999, and without a display...

This is the third discount by the third vendor within the few weeks of its release. It started at $250 and has just gone up from there! $1000 is a deep discount. When the nMP came out I never saw a deal on it until well into its run.

I will say this once again. When the nMP came out people complained about its so called lack of upgradeability. This new iMac pro makes the nMP look like one of apples most upgradable systems. Who wants to buy a workstation system with not one thing user upgradable! makes no sense.

Sorry blackcrayon its a stinker!

Drives and GPU can be upgraded via Thunderbolt 3. RAM can be upgraded by either Apple or an authorized 3rd party. Those are the three most likely upgrades for any desktop system and they're all supported.

Firstly, I said user upgradeable. Having some kid at an Apple store tear open my $5000-$13000 new computer to put ram in it and then pay for that service is absurd! Second using an eGPU on a workstation computer that I should not only be able to upgrade the GPU to hopefully an nVidia GPU but also multiple nVidia GPU's is also absurd! the eGPU is great for a MacBook pro and would be super great for the mac mini if apple ever gets around to updating the thing. And third it looks like Apple is using some kind of proprietary dual SSD raid system that doesn't look upgradable.

So again having a $5000-$13000 workstation system that has zero user upgradable parts is absurd.

All apple had to do to make this system a lot more appealing was make the back of the iMac pros case removable so that users can upgrade all the components as they see fit.

You said "not one thing user upgradeable". Upgrading drives and GPU through Thunderbolt 3 is user upgradeable. As for the RAM not being do-it-yourself, that's a minor point. It's not really a barrier for someone that needed a RAM upgrade for professional purposes.

Speaks volumes about the profit margins. Doubt they are selling at a loss.

I'm certain that they are. I have experience with consumer electronics profit margins, and they're never as high as you think for these sort of products. Add in the retail overhead, and they're losing money on each one, especially since the discount is not being subsidized by Apple.

Apple has throttled these machines significantly. The release of the true Mac Pro is probably imminent.

I wonder if by time my 18 core arrives there will be deep discounts on it from third parties already o_O

I also wonder if it will be considered the same way that we look at the G4 cube years down the road... though I think the honor is reserved for the 2013 mac pro.

Using eGPU seems to be a go-to response these days for all the people trying to validate a way to upgrade a system. We are using eGPUs here for computational purposes and have done other testing. It’s definitely not a great solution and not an upgrade to the primary GPU. It works for supplemental computational power and that’s about it. It also comes at the expense of the additional GPU card and the additional box and loss of a TB3 port to fully utilize it. Not only that, but the TB3 port only provides 1/4 of the bandwidth the card is capable of and adds a ton of latency. The eGPU support is only half-baked at this time and proper support for nVidia cards is not there yet.

Not sure why so many want to take this sale as a sign of the iMac Pro not selling well. These companies offer deals like this all the time. Always on the base model systems. That said, this is a product that will serve a much smaller market segment than the regular iMac systems. And I think many pros who are willing to spend the money on more powerful configurations are also likely to wait and see what the new Mac Pro brings, even though it’s still likely a year away.

Watch out on the on the TB3 to TB2 adaptors. I don't think you can hook up your displays directly to the iMac Pro with them. I have a Dell U2713H display and had to run it through my Promise Tech. Pegasus 2 R4 to get it to work like I had to on my old MacBook Pro. I did a quick search and Apple support say you need to get a third party USB-C to mini-displayport adaptor.

Looking to upgrade my second monitor to at least 4k. The most disappointing thing about these iMacs is the huge Bezel. Waiting to see what the new Mac Pro will cost and specs.

Yep, this is exactly what happened. I bought three TB3-2 converters. They only work with Thunderbolt displays, not Mini DisplayPort displays. Slightly confusing as the plug shape is the same. Anyhow, returned two of them and kept the third for my TB2 RAID drives. Then ordered those Plugable TB3 to display port plugs which seem to be the only ones that can drive a 4K display at 60hz. I have two dell p2715q monitors to attach to the Pro.

Sometimes I think some commenters are either new to the Mac party or don’t have a Mac at all.

You think macs don't fail or that Apple doesn't make mistakes? How cute.

In the past decade I've bought about a dozen macs and 3 of those died during their second year. I've also seen cheap white plastic macbooks go as long as 9 years.

Hmmm nowhere in what you quoted me as saying do I imply Macs don’t fail. I spoke from MY own experiences.

The Houston store is sold out. Just FYI. I don't think this was some publicity stunt because some stores in other cities still has stock.

Interesting, I bought mine when they had 8 left. (About an hour after this announcement went up here at MacRumors).

The iMac Pro is just too expensive and overkill for typical, mainstream Apple customers. The professionals are not interested in the base configuration hence why the 20% discount this soon. Those guys are ordering more expensive custom spec ones. For those who can already afford a $5k machine, $10k is not a lot of money especially if they have high six figure salaries from pro work.
You make a very good point. If I was interested in buying the iMac Pro I would definitely get double of the RAM and storage. That's why the base configuration might not be selling that well. Pros need all the power they can get and since your are already paying for it the base config. is not enough for most needs.
