I suspect some of the "thinness" will be mostly a visual trick, like with the iPad 2. That's not to say it won't actually be thinner, only that I think it's more about aesthetics than that they are chasing millimeters.

Yes, but we don't know how they do it.

All Apple products were always bigger inside than the outside dimensions.

....but seriously folks who cares?

If you sit in front of it you don't see the sides/depth. Only benefit I can see if they take out with the superdrive (outcry) and thinner saves weight.

Very important since everybody carries around their iMacs.

It's really entertaining reading the joy from such a "small thing" :D

I join the choir of exciting voices :p but except for speed bump what can they do?

1. thinner form factor. agree with others that this is not very usable - but nice. but i'd rather have possibility - like many other states - to have more disk space etc.

2. usb 3 - given

3. no optical - given (apple is moving away from this for sure). but give us something back.

4. desktop cpu and gpu? dont see that happening. i think apple calculates on i7 quad is enough for 95% of their customers...

ipad mini and a new imac soon on my desk :D

Done. The iMacs have been using desktop CPUs for awhile now...

Yeah, everything update rumors make a good smoke screen as well as stealing a little of Windows 8 thunder. Windows 8: lame software to be answered with lame hardware updates? But it all has the hype of being new.

Just give me an updated TBD with USB 3.0 and lower glare glass. I will pass on having all the overheating electronics inside that are difficult to service or upgrade. With the delay and the rumor about low yields on the 27 inch display and given some of the past problems with iMac displays, I think it could be risky to be an early adopter anyway.

Exactly. Apple is using a heatsink design in the iMac which is unlikely to change in newer models and which simply would not be able to deal with very powerful GPUs. I think there is very little room for speculation in terms of additional GPU power. We'll see upgrades, but not major ones.

And let's face it, Apple does not consider Macs to be gaming machines.

The jump in GPU power(mobile) was huge this year...

Why? It would end up costing like $299 and would basically be an iPod touch without all the useful features. No wifi, no app store, no camera, no imessages, no itunes store, no browser...

Yes, but an iPod Nano with 160GB means I can carry all my audiobooks, all my music, and even a dozen or so movies. Plus Bluetooth.

And while an iPod Max would probably cost $299 or something, an iPod Touch Max would be closer to $499. Plus - I can't see them doing a large storage iPod Touch without doing a large storage iPhone. Physical drives are more fragile than flash storage, the knocking around that a phone gets could cause problems. Plus, they really pushed the thin aspects of the iPod Touch and iPhone, and a physical drive would add thickness.

Must be smug being one of the "other" people. Trust me, you'd be singing a different tune if your most wanted item was long overdue for an update.

I just had to pick the worst cycle to play the waiting game.

Agreed.....that was a long cycle for and update. Mac Pro people are still waiting too.

This is like a reiteration of 2006. All the models get updated in quick succession except for the Mac Pro, and then six months later the Mac Pro comes in and brings the computing world to its knees. :)

Well said. Those items were assumed to be addressed. My concern is the wave of sealed devices with no ability to modify or enhance.

GPU on the 21.5 (if there is a 21.5) is hopefully a major step up above the 2011 2-.5 gpu.

Yeah, I'll be getting the entry-level 21.5'' iMac.

I am really doing my best to avoid applgasiming at this rumor. I've been waiting so long. My January 2006 iMac is really showing its age. But I'm doing my best to hold my exuberance in. I’ll wait for the event. I’ll wait for the event and then let it all out once the new models are official.

Only a little longer, now...:apple: :D

I just really hope they change the design/form factor. I have a late 2009 that's on it's 4th LCD due to the widespread hazing/smoky issue they could never seem to resolve with the current design. There's a thread on Apple's support forum that's hundreds of pages long with the same complaint through even the currently-selling models. It's crazy.

Very good point..I was a little worried at first, then I took a look at the ipad on apples site where they had a picture of the ipad from the side, then the term teardrop used to describe the new imac became a bit clearer...Indeed it is thin but the taper towards the edges makes it look thinner...So the new Imacs may just be thinner at the edges, but toward the center remain the exact same thickness so perhaps they will improve the form without any compromise....

Meanwhile in Dublin, someone is making space for the refreshed model :D

Couldn't they have just given it away to someone who needs it? Or like Red Cross or something?

Seeing that beautiful machine on the pavement with garbage, feels disconcerting.

Very strong possibility. The iPod classic is basically obsolete now. The only reason anyone would buy one is if they needed extra space, and they will eventually have 160GB hard drives in the iPod touches so I can see the iPod classic being discontinued within a few years. The end of the click wheel devices. :(

Yupp.

It's sad to see them go, I'm actually MASSIVELY surprised they still produce and sell them, I mean they even shut down the app store for it...
No more games... *sigh*
What if I decide to get an iPod classic now and want to "retro game" on it?
In a "perfect" DRM-world, where I also respect the claimed non-transferability of anyone's licenses to anyone, I wouldn't be able to.

Luckily, you can get them cracked, but what if I loved to be legit?
DRM and server/store dependability sucks, but everyone's flocking to it and praising the change blindly.
There's a lot of good change, but it's often poorly and unsustainably executed.

Speaking of click wheels... They'd make a lot of sense on Mac and AppleTV remotes... *cough*

In the past, has apple stores normally carried the i7 27" imacs with upgraded video card, or are those only available on the website as BTO? I'm holding out for my first iMac and don't know if stores even carry these upgraded units or if you can only get from their website.

It varies but some stores have been known to carry the "ultimate" edition i.e. the completely maxed out variant.

I am so stoked as well as this will be my fist Mac. Is it really true, Mac computers hold up really well and last years (had yours since 2006)?

Who gives a tinkers curse about iPods! We're getting iMacs!

Who even cares about the media event. Just shut up and take my money.

I hope if they went thinner they actually pulled it off on the power side. If it's good it will be my choice for my 2013 desktop purchase. ODD I don't care I rather them take it out, can easily use a cheapo drive the few times I need it and then put it back in a drawer. Just keep the desktop CPU and I am pretty much all good.

I tried win8 at a local Best Buy and really don't dig it. Feels fast and everything but I don't like the feel of 2 OS's on top of each other. Feels clunky and I don't see how it got by testing. Personal preference that is all. Windows is like Android and will be successful off # of devices it's put on anyways. I think they already announced like 8,000 win8 devices, so it always wins by default.

Let me add that is a perfectly fine strategy of a lot of devices whoring out an OS, and I have no problem with it and it offers great choice. Wish Apple upped their choice a little.

Ordered imac on Sunday but has not shipped yet should I be cancelling it and order again next week or will this update not be worth the bother

No one knows what its going to be like. It would be wise to wait and see - if you don't like it, buy a refurb prev gen and you'll save some money too ;)
