Slipped a 512 SSD in my 2009 iMac and maxed out the RAM on it - the i7 in it still incredibly fast. I do not think I will need to replace this machine any day soon.

But damn you Apple if you release a retina display 27" iMac!

Yeah. Because nothing will address the iMac's heat problems more efficiently than asking the GPU to juggle another 11 million pixels, on top of the 3.7 million the 27" model handles today.

I want one, so I can play games at 5120x2880 and 100 fps... for 3 seconds, before it melts a hole all the way to the Earth's core.

I definitely won't get the high priced retina. Just USB 3 is all I'm looking for. RAM is RAM so 8GB minimum. Of course my mid-2010 is i3, so that's a dual core. I CAN'T WAIT to go QUAD CORE! SSD and new GPU along with that, I think I will easily double my computing speeds.

lol :d

In the past, has apple stores normally carried the i7 27" imacs with upgraded video card, or are those only available on the website as BTO? I'm holding out for my first iMac and don't know if stores even carry these upgraded units or if you can only get from their website.

finally...now the iMac people can stop complaining ;)

Must be smug being one of the "other" people. Trust me, you'd be singing a different tune if your most wanted item was long overdue for an update.

I just had to pick the worst cycle to play the waiting game.

Forgive me to say, people can't game on iMac mostly I think is caused by how they setup the graphic in their games. Running iMac at native resolution with ultra graphic setting and 8 x MSAA are unnecessary. I think "high" settings is more than enough at that resolution.

I always believe "ultra" texture settings are only necessary when you are not at HD gaming, like me gaming on 15" legacy MBP.

That's definitely true. Most people feel that since they got a top-of-the-line machine they should go into it setting everything to maximum and it should all be good. Many don't realize that by just lowering a few of the settings like AA and even resolution they could have a much smoother gaming experience with very little if any noticeable affects. But few will do this as most people just want to load and go.

So, according to rumors, there's an event a week from today introducing a new iPad, new Mac Mini, new iMac, new MacBook Pro - and they haven't bothered to send any invites out yet.

I think we've reached the "throw a rumor against the wall and see what sticks" stage of reporting.

If we go to bed without media people reporting having received invitations... let's just say I can imagine Tim Cook leaning back, steepling his fingers the way Jobs would sometimes do, and smiling. If you can't stop leaks, you can flood them with false rumors.

what concerns me is the ipad mini is a new product. Its not an updated ipad or update to existing product. Products that are new may be left as a single update to simmer on the market and shine. I just dont see them creating a brand new product then distracting users by several other updates. there is no product focus that way.

like others, i am still hopeful.

I may be incorrect, but I think the invites generally make their way out around 11am PST?

I guess now that there is a new one on its way, my current iMac will stop working. Better just throw it out now. :D

True, but one thing's for sure -- Windows 8 and S(o)urface are being launched on October 26, and Apple isn't going to sit around twiddling its thumbs. They're going to make SOME kind of noise.

Edit: Aforementioned noise has been officially announced.

I want to do this but I'm concerned about the what to do with the thermal sensor. How did you handle it?

Lot of crazy happy Apple fans, or very very angry/disapointed Apple fans, next week :)

Don't worry, there'll be plenty of angry/disappointed fans next week, regardless of what happens.

Ways the disappointment may occur:
  • No event
  • One or more rumored updates left out
  • One or more updated products fails to meet expectations
I guarantee that if nothing else, many people will be upset due to that last one. I know if the iMac turns out to be worst case as rumored (too thin w/ possible heat problems, no optical drive, no 3.5" hard drive, soldered RAM, etc) I'll be muttering "WTF, I waited all these months for that??!?":eek:

Disappointing news. I hope Apple isn't losing focus on iOS devices by wasting time unnecessarily on Mac products nobody wants anymore.

No one needs a thinner iMac but the moment it comes out we all seem no need it desperately. Apple got us hooked time and time again.
