iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) Order Thread

My replacement followed exactly the same timeline as my initial order.

Ordered 1 Sep, shipped today (4 Sep), arrives next Tuesday (8 Sep).

i7 with BTO options of the 5700XT and 1TB SSD
 
My iMac was delivered on Thursday :)

Restoring from a Time Machine backup seems to get more buggy and problematic for me with each new Mac, so I just used it to transfer over some apps and documents and set everything up as new. Other than those headaches I'm happy with everything so far! After 4-5 years setting up new Macs with restores I suppose it was time to wipe the slate clean.

I always prefer a fresh install on new computer instead of a restore. I backup on backblaze but I keep my local data organized in directories that I copy to an external drive before switching to a new computer. Then I reinstall every single app and then copy my documents, etc. on the new computer. That way, there is no unecessary kerfuffle from previous versions of apps.

I would do this but I swear that the mouse acceleration / inertia is different on my 2017 iMac compared to the 2020 one I recently set up as new, even though the settings were identical.

It is driving me crazy.

Yeah, I've been using TM restores since El Capitan / Sierra, so I'm pretty sure there was some "kerfuffle" that needed to be cleared.

When I was a young kid mouse acceleration was a "no go" in terms of gaming on 'XP' when playing 'Counter-Strike 1,6' 😆

Since then(10 years ago) mouse acceleration has always felt weird to me. When I switched to 'macOS' I of course had to find a similar solution. Today I use a Logitech Master MX 2S with the Logitech software but the "secret" is this:

Have you tried that?

In my experience 3rd party software won't change the settings(mouse acceleration) back when you change cursor speed, but when you change cursor speed in system preferences --> mouse the mouse acceleration will change with it. It can be checked by reading the default setting via the link above at diffrent cursor speeds...

When I check on my 2017 with:

defaults read .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling

It tells me it's set to 0.6875, which I an pretty sure was the default on my 2020 iMac as well.

So I'm not sure that disabling mouse acceleration would help.... I also played around with apps that let you change the acceleration curve and it didn't help. My issue with the 2020 iMac is that the mouse felt floaty - it didn't slow down quickly enough when I wanted to stop moving the cursor. The iMac 2017 I believe still has acceleration, it's just more precise and it comes to a stop basically instantly, removing the feeling of floatiness I favour of one of responsiveness.

It does my head in! I am going to set up a new user on the 2017 iMac as someone suggested and see if it's the same.
 
My latest two updates. When can I reasonably expect it? They say the 15th, but I am only 677 miles away from Memphis.

The shipping box smells like it was at a sewage plant. Currently transferring from my old iMac via Ethernet seems to be going along at a pretty good clip. Last time I did this was from a Time Machine backup and that took about fifteen hours. Hopefully this will be quicker.

so you got yours two days after the Memphis release?
 
I Just got my "with delivery courier" notification. 2 days early, so I had to rush home from work. Definitely not complaining!
Just checked the tracking on the 3rd party RAM. That is also out for delivery, so hopefully it will all be here today :)
1 Week from order to delivery is pretty great for a BTO config!

Edit: I spoke too soon. The iMac was delivered successfully, and I'm typing this on t as it transfers data. But the courier delivering the RAM couldn't be bothered using the intercom so didn't deliver. So tomorrow I need to try to pick it up from the depot or get it redelivered. :mad:

Man, I got the extended keyboard and I have to relearn the key layout all over again. I'm wondering if I should get the non-extended one instead... muscle memory hurry up!

Oh really? I didn’t think they were that different! I just thought it had a proper arrow key arrangement and the number pad. What throws you off specifically?
