iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) Order Thread

What do you all do with your old iMacs, Mac minis, mbps, etc.? I typically trade them in, and was going to do so with my iMac from 2006, which is certainly functional, however, I wonder if it makes sense to work with two computers? Does anyone find that useful, or too unaesthetic? Funny, I offered my iMac 2006 to the kids, but they prefer their MacBook airs. They're only 8 and 9, so I don't think they have a sense of what a desktop really is!! They're certainly utilizing those airs for virtual school!
 
Anybody else have a noticeable burr on the aluminum on the bottom of the front of the chin? I can see it and feel it.

The two top corners of the chin, where it meets the screen, are also really sharp on mine.

Minor details but still, kinda sloppy.
 
Sold my base 2019 5K imac for 1600$ after 7 months of usage, then ordered the 2020 base model for 1800$. I had bought a base model for 2019 because I was expecting a redesign for 2020, then went again with the base model due to AS transition.

update: Shipped today 9/15... OWC received today 9/21

BTW my 4 matching sticks from OWC work great. I tried putting all in at once but she went into an early power up loop, not sure I would have heard it if an external drive wasn't powering on and off. So I put two sticks in the slots Apple used, zapped the PRAM and she booted fine. Next I simply added the other two sticks and she booted fine... and has ever since.

This iMac would do nothing but make fan noise and quiet electrical noise. I haven’t had one fail that badly out of the box, however I’ve had several “DOA” iPhone 6 devices because of the front-facing camera issue. I’d ask for the replacement, it would arrive with the same problem it was being ordered for!

In my professional experience I’ve seen many DOA devices from many manufacturers, Apple included.

I initiated the return myself through the Apple Store app. I called to let them know it was DOA, although they didn’t seem to care given the “job” of initiating the return had been done.

In DOA situations I would always go with a full return and order a new one. No sense in it being my problem and in my experience: once a lemon, always a lemon.

Got my base model 5K iMac today. Before I turned it on, just added 2x4gb RAM on empty slots. However, when it boots I saw that the RAMs work at 2133MHz instead of 2666. I got the spare rams from a 2018 Mac Mini. Any suggestions?

edit: Fixed! Solution is down below;

"You have to put the old ram in slots 1&2 and the new ram in slots 3&4 to get the correct speed. You won't have dual channel however.

Issue is mixed ram... has to be 100% identical in every way to use the 1&3 and 2&4 configuration and get dual channel."

2020 iMacs will default to 2133 MHz if the RAM is mixed size and/or type. To get 2666 MHz all RAM in all slots must be identical capacity, chipset, etc.

My BTO came from China. 20" i9 w/ 5700xt.

How does ordering from the Apple education store work When it comes to a BTO iMac? How does Apple verify education eligibility? I like the 2299$ 27 inch iMac but I really don’t like the 512gb storage In the pre configured version that is available in Apple stores and would like to get 1Tb SSD which forces me to go with the BTO route as opposed to just going into the Apple store with my student id and purchasing the 2299$ pre configured model that is available in stores with the education discount right there and then by showing them my ID on the spot
 
Ordered 8core/8GB/1TB/5700 Sept 1.
I picked it up at FedEx on Sept.9 (7 Days before scheduled delivery)
Put 32GB Crucial Ram in before powering it on for the first time.
Runs like a dream. Keyboard is a joke. Threw it in my iPad gobag.

Keyboard is surprisingly flimsy and non-responsive for such an otherwise beautiful machine. I cannot get rid of my password on startup, and the keyboard does not activate until after the screen lock on start up, so completely useless!

Does your iMac behave strange or haven't you just not found the option?

System Preferences --> Users & Groups --> Login Options

In terms of bad bluetooth connection removing and connecting devices can some times help. Maybe you also have other devices interferencing the signal?
 
Guess UPS decided to fly my 8-core i7/8GB/1TB/5500XT to Louisville to clear customs instead of doing so right here in NJ, less than 50 miles from final destination. Delivery scheduled for 9/16:

Oh thank you! But the Automatic Login says "off" and is greyed out. Before I'd go to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy and then I have unchecked Require Password under General.

If you have FileVault turned on, automatic login will be disabled.

It works like the regular online store, but with education prices. There’s no step where you have to upload ID.

The caveat is Apple reserves the right to check your "education" status at anytime. If you cannot provide proof, you are billed the difference.
