iMac Revision and iLife on August 7th?

Being greener is not all about saving power. The LED displays get rid of mercury, which has been the biggest downside to CCFL backlights.

Steve jobs quoted that all new displays will be LED within a year, so why not add them into a major redesign. Especially if you can make your enclosure thinner and sleeker by incorporating them.

Ok, my expectations for LED iMacs are back online. I still hope that since they run cooler, they can put in some desktop components.

I do agree that if Apple replaces the click-wheel in the video iPods -- which I hope they don't -- they won't replace it with a virtual version on the screen. They'll use the multi-touch interface of the iPhone. Of course if they use the same processing power as in the iPhone, iPods are going to slow down a bit. The iPhone is pretty "snappy" but it's not as fast changing menus, screens, etc., as an iPod with all those high-resolution graphics to draw.

How do you think the recent announcement that Apple will probably
put lyrics on the ipod interacts with what they'll do to the scroll features?
I think if they do start selling songs with lyrics embedded (another reason
to buy $1.29 versions, I guess?) that it would be nicer to stick with
a scroll button, but some people might disagree. Softwarewise, I don't
which is easier- the iphone interface or the wheel, when it comes to
autoscrolling lyrics and then having the user interrupt that, etc.

Yeah, and even if they don't go desktop for these expected late-summer
imacs, they'll probably have the l.e.d. to anticipate the next series of chips.

I respect that the imacs have low power consumption, and my sense is
that when they select the next chips, they will stick with that approach.
I expect in January there will be imacs in the new box that get really good
chips, but not the best best, because of the power/temperature given the
thinness of the expected new box. But maybe even a quad for the 24"? We
can dream...

I just hope they do push these machines out soon, and that they aren't
having problems getting it together, or with component availability slowdowns.

i hope they don't get rid of the 17" imac, shoot i wish they'd make a super sleek 13" imac mini for the living room or kitchen

It's more likely they'll hold onto the 17" in the old ugly box for the next
six months or more. They can't blow the back-to-school market by
yanking it completely.

Hmm, i doubt they will add LEDs. Cost too much I expect...

That's a tough one, isn't it?

Maybe an led only for the top end machine?? Somehow I think they might
actually bite the bullet and push it on the 20" and 24", and raise the price
on the 20" $100. I could be way off, though.

Yes, I would admit LED enabled screens would be more expensive. But Apple has promised to use all-LED backlighting in the next year, and the new iMacs are not likely to get another update in that timeframe, especially if the nearly-record breakingly slow pace holds. Also, since LED's run cooler, they might cut costs by putting in desktop components. It might balance out, and if not, Apple could choose for it to eat slightly into profits in return for greater sales from the increasingly environmentally-conscious community.

Apple has definitely had a track record in releasing better machines at lower costs consistently over the years. I wouldn't be too surprised if the new machines cost less than the current ones, if not the same price.

No bull. I bought my 20" Rev B G5 iMac in May 2005 for $1800.

The current Core 2 Duo iMac kicks the snot out of it, and costs $1500.

I think a aluminum iMac would be quite nice. It gets rid of heat much better.

Perhaps Apple will migrate all their products to the aluminum look? Apple changed design ten years ago with use of polycarbonate plastics. Perhaps now they'll do it again, but with aluminum.

Looks a lot more neat and professional then some of these plastic PCs you see. Like an Alienware. What's with those things? They look like they're from another planet, but with bad designers...

1) Its highly likely that both new imacs will use the santa rosa chipset, hence the processor speed will more likely be 2.2ghz to 2.33ghz, as processors for the new SR chipset come in multiples of 200ghz, 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4, like MBP

2) A computer at £1200/$1999 will not have less than 2GB Ram as standard. If we are only going to see 2 models, wouldnt surprise me if the 20" only had 1GB of Ram in the stock option in order to keep the price down, but think we will definately see 2GB in the 24".

3) I hope we dont see OLED displays in the imac line just yet, esp with the problems re the yellow tinted 15"MBP's, and besides i think they would bump the cost up somewhat.

4) Blue ray as a BTO - again would be nice but doubtful. If it did I think it could well be in the form of a combo drive that can read blu ray disks and read/write CD, DVD etc, as the cost of blu ray writers are still £350 onwards

Soooo, I got it half right. I did say 2.4 Ghz for the higher end model. I'd much rather see a bumped up VRAM on an 8 series graphics card rather than 2 GB SDRAM. Extra system ram is sooo much easier historically to add than a grahpics card. Just my pref.

As for Blu-ray, I did mean just a player.

Also, if you're talking about an OLED screen at $1999.99 for the way I have it configured, I think the math shows it doable.

It would be doubtfull if the new imacs have an LED screen because of the problems happening with the MBPs. Also, the LED screens would raise the price, and would not be good for the consumer market (me). If apple were to put LED screens in them, then it would be limited to certain space saving components, because knowing apple to well, they like having slim form factors.

Sure, Aluminum radiates heat better than plastic, but it's not as good as NO CASE AT ALL! That's right, I'm telling you the new iMacs will have NO CASE in order to radiate the most heat!

I went to Apple store today and I was told that they received an e-mail, saying that new iMacs will coming in about a month. What surprised me was that there would be 30' iMac .

if true then methinks someone has been fired :)

i went into my closest apple store and plucked up the cheek to ask, and they wouldnt tell me a thing, except they are strictly not allowed to comment on such things, which was the expected answer.

this guy is gone.

i would doubt that apple sent any emails about new models to their employees. they did not even send emails about leopard delays until the press knew about it...... i would know, i was still working for them when that happened. this guy is spitting bs at you, hoping that it stops you from asking any other questions about future models. if more reports of such an email surface, then you might be onto something....... otherwise, forget it.

Very possible it was a bs. But even if apple did release 30" iMac, I would not go for it, so it does not really matters.

so should i buy a 30gb ipod video now for my holidays, or wait for these ones after my hols?
What is expected to be different?
thanks

a little off topic....... but anyway. i would say wait. the current iPod lineup is ripe for change at some point before the holidays.

I wouldn't be surprised if come July 31 we see an invite for an event (Aug 7) in which they release new matchingipods and imacs together. Right at the end of the free-ipod promo and just in time for the holiday season.
