it will disappear eventually yes. And that time is coming fast. But it´s not 100% it will happen in the next imac. They still add ODD on their laptops.

I think the only reason the 13" Macbook Pro still has an ODD is because they weren't ready to launch a 13" Retina Pro yet, so it was easier to go with a spec bump and the same chassis. I think once that launches, we'll see 13" and 15" Retina Pros without ODD and the regular 13" Pro will be phased out. Just a theory.

As an experiment, I removed the ODD from my school-issued laptop (a fujitsu tablet laptop), and was amazed by how much space it took up, and how much lighter my computer felt without it. I could slot in a 2nd battery into that space.

Still, seeing how popular the dual hard-drive combo seems to be here, seems like a pity Apple isn't offering the HDD+SSD in place of ODD combo. Even something as basic as a 500gb spinning drive + 64gb SSD plus 8gb starting ram would more than suffice in differentiating the pro from the air line sufficiently, IMO. :(

I want room for hardware that I will use. If Apple could squeeze in a desktop class GPU, I will gladly trade it for the ODD. That's something you can't just plug and play over a cable, like you can with an ODD, which doesn't require as much bandwidth.

But you know, I can easily turn this around on you and ask, "why not just buy the external supdrive"?

*SMH* Both points have already been brought up in my previous posts.

Well, I won't be annoyed by having to plug in an external ODD since I won't be doing that at all, so, yeah, the reboot spinning sound would annoy me more. I'm not sure why you're debating this so fiercely. It's kind of like debating whether the tide is going to come in. Apple's eliminating disc drives. They don't believe in Blu Ray. They don't offer the OS on disc anymore. They'd rather sell you movies and apps in itunes/the app store. They'd rather you store stuff in the cloud. We can debate the merits of it, but it's still happening.

*SMH 2* That's like saying "I'm a man, so giving birth is definitely less painful than waxing my chest hair."

I'm sorry if I sounded fierce. I usually just make 1-line comment about it, but Eddy's post just made me want to let it all out. I want to make all the 'advanced' people understand why some of us still like to have the ODD built in. Not trying to change opinions, just want you to realize that we have good reasons to want the ODD to stay (and I still haven't talked about internet connection speed factor).

My arguments are not about whether the ODD will be eliminated or not, but whether it should be eliminated from the coming 2012 iMac. I'm not denying that ODD is going to be totally ditched soon and I too will be happy without it, but I would want it to stay for the 2012 iMac. I'm just stating my preferences here, not saying what Apple will or will not do.

You see, people shouldn't get their hopes up about having a better hardware in place of the ODD in the new iMac because if Apple eliminate the ODD, the most probable thing Apple will do with the 'free space' is reducing the machine's weight/thickness, just like they did with the rMBP. And there you go... your dream iMac Air!

Eh, come to think about it, they will probably really name it Mac Air. Ya know, MacBook Air - MacBook Pro, Mac Air - Mac Pro! Although I don't know what good will being 'Air' (light) do for a desktop computer.

Well, today is Tuesday. The day of Apple.

And i have a good feeling today is the day of the 2012 iMac

I sure hope so!

I've been more and more optimistic each Monday night and Tuesday this August. As we close in on September its any week now!

I'm not holding my breath, I really feel like if we get just a spec update now to Ivy Bridge it might be too little too late unless they give us a matte screen option.

I think we will see new iMac somewhere in October

something like the "back to the mac" event

Haha I swear I woke up this morning feeling the same way: "It's Tuesday!" (well, it wasn't Tuesday in Cupertino just yet, but it's just that I live in the future…)

I honestly don't think I'll see it before September, possibly late September or even October, but this little mind trick of waiting it out week by week makes the wait more bearable.
I'd still personally be happy with a machine that looks pretty much like the 2011 model, only with Ivy bridge and USB3. Better graphics? Sure, but I'm coming from a 2006 iMac — the last white plastic one — so it'd be a boost anyway.

Fingers crossed it's this Tuesday; if not, well, there are many other Tuesdays out there…

I dont mind the look, i just want a new machine. I want a nice editing station. Coming from a 13" '09 MBP 2.53Ghz

The new Apple motto. See you next Tuesday

The only way I would like an OOD included in the next iMac is if it is a BluRay drive. Otherwise I am not interested and have no use for it. But thats just me.
With regard to release date, as someone who has been waiting a year for an update, it is my honest opinion that we will not see a new iMac this year. I can only guess that the reason they are taking this long is because they are waiting until they can upgrade the lineup by a huge amount. I am lead to believe Haswell can provide this leap. I think it will be a redesign. Maybe we will see a spec bump before haswell but this doesn't interest me. Just my prediction.

Lool.

what could actually happen is no release this year :(

so we could be hanging until the end of the year, Apple should give some kind of hint, they are torturing us...they know that it is way overdue dammit!

I don't think its going to happen this year now either ... Personally this old pig of a G5 isn't going to corpse that soon ... Its just CRAWLING to its grave ... I'm not interested in some iffy spec bump ... I'll wait till a proper worthwhile redesign next year with a decent upgrade in power
So Apple ... You've completely fouled up your timing there
This guy Cook the Crook ain't impressing at all ... Bit of a banker me thinks ;)

Yes.

Ok, that's not entirely true. I hope it's Sep 12. I hope it's tomorrow. But I don't have a realistic expectation until October.

i guess so. its kinda funky though that apple ask to triple the space for ipads you know ?? and removing the mac mini and mac pros ?? have they gone insane ??? this is sickening

What is the lag?

Since Apple has been using Intel chips what has been the average amount of time between Intel's release of the chips and Apple's placing them in Macs?

I agree, its really sad and another step into an era I dont particularly like :(
