If the iPhone is released on 9/12, then that will mean TWO iphone releases have occurred since the iMac was last refreshed.

pitiful

.................... I'm okay with waiting.

2014 here I come!

Perhaps.

Waiting is no problem for those who WANT a new iMac, but for those who NEED a new iMac...

Since when do technical things aside from sport cars attract women? :)

Somehow I get the feeling we won't see any september release. No news, only iPhone and new iPad stuff flooding everywhere.

It almost seems like there won't be any desktop update in the near future. Which honestly sucks.

Oh hey Napoleon !

Well. It's because there aren't almost ANY news concerning the iMac
or even any other desktop like the Mac Mini or the Mac Pro.

It never is... It's actually been more rumors about the iMac now that what is normal

Boring....

I went into the store the other day... The iMacs suddenly don't look as sexy as they used to - looks rather dated.

I've recently made the switch to Mac products - 3 pads, 2 iPhones and atv3.

However, I'm sick of waiting for the iMac to be updated - waiting for over a year. Zzzzz..... and I don't want to buy old tech. The new pcs that are rolling out are pretty impressive. And I can buy a laptop and pc for the same price as what the new iMac will be when its eventually released in 2020. Plus the pc is better for games IMO. PC's integrate well with the above as well.

Just my two bobs

I don't believe dozens of new articles are coming out every day proclaiming that they'll be no optical drive on the new iMac. How old does this news need to get before bloggers stop writing articles about it!?! WTF!

I noticed the same thing!

There's at least 30 or more articles about the same topic. The bootcamp code mentioning that its possible to boot off a USB drive for Windows 7. Great and all, but that does not necessarily imply that the computers are going optical driveless (although they most likely will).

The same section of code references the nrMBPs, which do happen to have optical drives. It means nothing.

Exactly. I'm probably going to ***** a brick the morning I check this website before work (most likely a Tuesday), and see a post from like 3am PST saying "New iMacs Tomorrow!" with a leaked price/sku list or a screenshot of one of the labels on the box showing the specs.

It's really just a matter of time.

Plus it's letting me save up that few hundred to get a few extra options :D

I think by "need it" you mean you just "really really want it." I get that people don't want to be burned by purchasing the current machine just to have new hardware right around the corner. But I'm sure if you really "needed" it then you would be fine with a current iMac.

could care less if they take out the optical drive, think about it if they take it out they will have room to put something better and more useful instead. you can buy an optical drive usb for 10$ on ebay so quit crying about an optical drive. I much much rather have better design or better perfomance by taking out the optical drive. Everyone now these days have usb drives and other sort of media, mp3 players are dirt cheap if you want to still burn cd i already pointed out you can buy one for 10 bucks.

I rarely use an optical drive. Infact my previous gaming PC had no optical drive installed. I didn't need one. Same for my gaming PC from 2009 too.

It's dead to me :D

If they remove it from the iMac I sure hope we see a newly designed internal layout with enhanced cooling capabilities.

Would be awesome to see the optical drive removed and the computer go to strictly flash storage. Makes sense for an All-In-One. Considering how nearly everything is proprietary in that machine (except for the CPU, GPU and Ram), there shouldn't be a traditional 2.5" or 3.5" disk or drive in their, it should use the same style flash that is used in the rMacbook Pro.

That 3.5" disk plopped right in the middle just cooks itself to death after a year or two anyhow.

No optical drive, hah, I'll take it a step further and hope that we see no HARD drive too!

This again..

I rarely use my ODD, but I DO use it, and didn't have much of an alternative. Sometimes, that's just the way software/music/video comes. The entire world isn't streaming/digital distribution yet. And requiring an external rather defeats the point of an All-in-One.

I'm sure it will be gone in the next couple years. I wouldn't be totally shocked if it was gone in 2012, but it doesn't seem likely to me.

And there isn't really anything they could do with the space; if you're thinking desktop-class GPU they would still need to fatten the chassis quite a bit to handle the heat and up the PSU quite a bit to support it. More likely we'd just see the profile get narrower by 25mm or so. Yay. Now it fits in my hand slightly better and perhaps weighs an ounce less when I move it from the box to the desk where it will remain stationary for 3+ years.

I don't care if they release with an ODD or not - just release the damn thing!

Well, true.. at this point they could release a black plastic box with a monitor sticking out, and as long as it had Ivy Bridge, 680M, and OS X I'd buy it...

Nnn-no. The current iMac is not fine because if I buy it now, it's already more than 1 year ahead towards obsolesce, with the same price it was released like 15 months ago, so it's bad value for my money. But of course all these wouldn't matter if I were a rich bastard.
