The iMacs have LED backlit IPS screens. You cannot get anything better than that!!

they could stop using that ultra-glare glass on the front. ever tried to use an iMac next to a window? you need to use a white terminal background and wear a black shirt to see anything on the damn screen.

they ought to be coating those screens in the same anti-reflective stuff optometrists use on eyeglasses if they're not gonna give us a matte option

maybe an i3 base level

At first I thought this might just be a bump to the 320 graphics with same old c2d. But now I'm thinking why not an i3 as base level with the 320 graphics. Probably include i5 option as upgrade option. Not sure I'd want one, but I suppose it is good for branding purposes.

Yeah, I don't have my hopes up... but quad-core is pretty commonplace now, even in low-to-mid tier PCs. Those old i5 750's can't be *that* expensive for Apple now compared to a year ago.
The Core i5 750 has already been superseded.

I don't think the late 2010 mobile refresh is Southern Islands (early 2011 one probably is though).

Mobility HD 5870 doesn't look to get a true successor until 2011.
Do you know of any reason why ATI is only pushing out entry/low-midrange Southern Island parts this year? 40nm is solid enough from TSMC and there is also Global Foundries.

Mine is great -- I think you will find that most folks will disagree, though some had problems early on. I have not seen a more beautiful monitor than the one i am looking at right now.

make the screen all medium / dark grey and you'll probably notice quite a difference in evenness. was like that on the countless 24" iMacs i had / seen, as well as my current 27" iMac.

I'm sorry to say you are thinking of Apple from before 2005. The best we can hope for is an iMac with faster FireWire.

While it's unlikely we'll see all of that at once, USB3 seems inevitable, it's just a question of when. Even esata isn't that outlandish except that if faster FW and USB are on the way apple may feel like those fill the need.

Agreed. Lack of eSATA on iMacs is pretty laughable.

And the only factor ruling it out for certain types of users.

Well, I hope the Mac Pro rumor comes to pass although I would much rather see a replacement of their 3+ year-old 30" display. At some point, Apple needs to offer something new or simply forfeit graphics altogether.

Try 6 years for the 30 inch ACD. It's the only thing in the lineup that still uses Firewire 400.

Yes, "Apple is a mobile company." This is a fact. They will be killing MacSlows either by neglect or on purpose. Probably the former, as we are witnessing.

"Fact"... you will have to define what that fact is, exactly. A "mobile" company. I don't think they will be ditching the iMac for decades, and that isn't "mobile". What they do with the MacPros depends on what they find useful in the market. Sooner or later the bloatech will vanish except from very-very high end and compartmentalized markets. When 1% of the customers own such huge computers they will fade fast.

My MacPro from 3 years ago is still completely speedy and I do graphics and publishing. This thing hasn't been upgraded aside from drives and OS and i can run multi-format publishing without any inconvenience. Maybe gamers and CGI guys find the MacPro underpowered, but games and CGI were never Apple's focus.

The market is changing, propelled where it was going to go naturally by Apple's recognition of mobility. Who would have thought something like the iPod/Pad/Phone would be so useful to most people? Miniaturization, compacting, portability, longer battery--the paradigm of 2010 onward to 20xx.

You certainly can. I'd start by going to wide gamut. Also use RGB LEDs not white ones for the backlight (I think RGB LED is the only way to get wide gamut on LED displays right now anyways).

I'm all for that! I wonder this pretty often too. Back in the day, it was hard to find a CRT that didn't have AR coatings, but here it seems there is nothing. Has anyone ever heard of or seen somebody replacing their iMac glass with a piece of museum glass, cut to fit?

Reflection was a much bigger problem in the CRT days, because the glass was not flat.

I agree about the case changes. The current design giving room for actual desktop chips is enough for most. I also agree with i5 and i7 only being in the 27" model.

I'm sure there might be some mild cosmetic change, but if they redesign the entire package and form (unless it becomes touch screen) would be ridiculous. That would be wasted cash. This design is good enough for all function at this time, aside from having a couple drives that can be user exchanged from the outside edge of the case.

I thought the new iMacs were fine? Don't they use higher quality IPS displays like the ACD now?

If I could get the 21.5" in a quad-core configuration, that would be very appealing! Especially at nearly the same price points. A video card bump wouldn't hurt either, in addition to the yummy new USB 3.0!

Glad to hear some Mac news too!

They do but only for the previous 24 and the current 27 inch monitors. Unfortunately for the 21 inch it is TN or Twisted Nematic display which is not very good at all. It shows like a negative when viewed from varying angles having color shift issues.

The 21.5" iMacs have the same display quality as the 27". They are both IPS and LED as noted here. The previous generation 24" iMac had IPS but had a CCFL backlight. The last iMac with a TN panel was the previous generation 20" iMac.

help!! frustrated and desperate

is this thread is only for the 21.5" model only? i prefer to have the i7 quadcore configuration becus i do need high end processor and big screen as 27" is ideal for my rendering and graphic project.

actually today i just ordered the 27" imac. but the payment yet to be done so the purchased is still hold. but if apple does offer i7quad model same time as those 21.5" as mention above i surely choose the 27" machines if the price isnt much different..

post before:

Im a university student. I do architecture, graphic editing and rendering.

The question is i want to buy the latest 27" iMac i7, is it worth to wait for the latest release or just buy the current model?
I googled and the most said that Apple will released new model in fall, which is late September, or some said they will released maybe a months or two. I need a high end mac (processor n graphic), moreover i needed it urgently before my final project, but if i do purchased it now, the spec of the graphic is quite old 4850 512mb or worth waiting for the ddr5 5x 1g series?
The issues is apart from i7 4cores, i need a better graphic card for my 3d rendering and gaming experience.

Any advice is really appreciated. Thanks.

We will see Blu-Ray... when Apple resurrects Shake :D

Seriously have no idea what Apple is playing at in the pro CG world. They're shooting themselves in the foot with the lack of decent offerings. Perhaps they just want to make iPhones for the rest of time... least it will give them a chance to figure out how to make a working antenna. Yup, I went there. ;)

I'd buy if there's a proper i5 or i7 in the new 21.5" iMac

Well heck. I just bought a 20" LED backlit display, but if they were to release a 21.5" iMac with a proper quad-core i5 or i7 I'd probably get one. 27" is just too damn big for my needs.

The Core i5 750 has already been superseded.

Not it hasn't. there is a Core i5 760 at a higher price and higher clock: $205 and 2.8 GHz respectively. It didn't replace. It is another similarly priced option.

Intel did not cut the price on the 750 when they introduced the 760. The public 1K unit price is still exactly the same as last year: $196. You'll see some on the net for a $4-5 of dollars less, but that would have zero impact on iMac price. Likewise the $9 differential Apple could drop in the 760 with probably no impact on the iMac price is shave a couple dollars on something else from last years bill of materials. So it is a natural candidate for a speed bump update if going that route (skipping Sandy Bridge).

It is not cost, but power that is the bigger blocker to moving it to the 21.5" iMacs. The C2D's were in the same general price zone, but weight in at 30 less Watts.

I know this time will come:eek:
even though I would like to have a new one but the one i'm using is less than a year old.

let's hope

that the high pitched noises, hard and optical drive problems and the yellow tint issues have been taken care of.

If these are: yay! :)

I would so like to see Apple's huge slide in quality control be put to pasture.
