USB C is a connector type, not a protocol like USB 3.1. The Apple MacBook USB C port supports only USB 3.0 speed. 10 GBit/s USB 3.1 uses the same A/B connectors as 5 GBit/s USB 3.0. The USB C connector type is just an option in the USB 3.1 specification, not a requirement. The USB-C IS the new standard.... when the chips that support USB 3.1 Rev 2 (10Gbps) come out the only port that will support it is the new USB-C port.
