I wonder what in the firmware is causing the fans to be audible. Was it not cooling sufficiently before?
It is kinda strange..
It is a very cool computer (in more ways than one
If it is a mistake i believe they will correct it in a future update.

For me its not the fan going quicker.
The speed of the fan was the same before and after the update of the firmware.
It is just that the firmware requires some type of reset and right after the firmware loads it makes the fans going super high in a split second. Right after that is when the fan starting thudding/ticking. Like the bearing has suddenly become noisy.
I'm gutted and disappointed i have to phone apple to request yet another placement.
It seems as if this is a problem if it's happened to someone else?
I have updates turned OFF. What update exactly is this (I am on 10.8.4)?
If this happens when I finally do this it would be extremely depressing -- I tested fan noise extensively before deciding to keep this machine (I am very sensitive). keep us posted how it goes. Also, are you out of the 14day return?
I initiated the return today. I love the machine so i'm going to give it one more shot.
I feel like one of those guys who has posted saying they returned 10 macs before getting the perfect one
This will be my second return. 1st due to a electrical crackling when at low brightness, this due to a noisy fan bearing. I think i'm just unlucky in this case.
The update was the SMC v1.1 update. When you apply it, it does some sort of reset and the fans momentarily spin up to super high speeds. It was after this incident that i noticed the noisy fan bearing.
I downloaded a fan control app and tried to replicate the speed the fans went at after the SMC update but i wasn't able to go that high so it must be some custom thing as part of the update.
I really think apple should look at this because spinning the fans up this high could lead to fan bearing failure on fans with a particular weak lubrication.
Yeah, it's definitely an issue after that update. However, if software broke it, software can fix it. I'll live with it until we see an update that corrects this.
If software ran the fan in a state that caused mechanical damage then software con not fix it...

Thanks man, I have the same Issue and you just made up my mind, I am going to exchange mine tonight, today is the last day for an exchange![]()
Apple needs to fix this, or there's more returns coming to them.
Man, it's starting to bother me again. It still says it's hanging around 1200RPM, but it's noticeably louder.....
Had mine since August 2013 and I have never even heard the fan.....
I missed my 15 days returnso we are on the same boat now.
Everyday when I open my Imac, I can't help but listen to the damn Fan NOISE!!!
I tried to go to Frys and listen to the display unit, but it has backround noises, I can't tell.
Don't know what to do now.

Have you updated to the new mavericks?
Yes, it's only after the firmware update, does the fan noise start.
I will contact apple support tonight and let you know how it goes, I can't stand the fan noise....
OMG do you guys have sound samples of this fan noise? I could clearly hear the fan both before and after the firmware update. But then again I have pretty sensitive hearing. The noise I hear is barely audible and not a problem at all really.
That'd be good. I thought I'd just not noticed the fan when I first got it, but after reading this I'm beginning to think it could have been after the firmware upgrade.
Not that it bothers me a huge amount though.

I'll try to record the sound sample once i am home. If there's background noise, you can't hear it, but in a quiet room at night, it's very annoying.
Oh, I know. Normally it wouldn't bother me, but there are two reasons why it does.
1. It didn't happen until after the firmware update. That tells me it's not normal. I even tested with a clean install. No fan problems, updated firmware and the fan becomes audible.
2. My late 2009 iMac had no such fan noises. Why should my newer 2013?

I don't get this. A clean install will not rollback the firmware.

Check out mine. It's a bit exaggerated in the video though. It's not software related. The fans after some usage sound like this. It could be either a design fault or faulty bearings. The fans have a constant speed of 1190 - 1200 rpm.
