Yes, I can hear as much fan as I could before. Which is barely none :D

My external 2.5 hard drive was making more noise than the iMac...

And when I did the upgrade, as I had read this thread before, I paid close attention to fan noise after the update to SMC, I guess i'm lucky on that end.

Wait you're saying is you could hear the fan even before the update?

Your situation is unique. We've established this. Everyone's fan spins up during firmware updates, and all Mac computers do this. Take your iMac to the Genius Bar if you believe your system has somehow become defective.

I can assure you nobody can provide any useful-to-you information.

I believe I have been provided fairly useful information already. Just looking into things a little more before I take it in. That is all.

After doing the 10.9.1 update and restart on my new mini which I have had for around 60 days the fan started making a metallic sounding clicking noise? I unplugged the power and left it unplugged for around a minute which will re set the SMC and the noise is gone.

That's good to hear. I wish that worked for me.

Just tried it - still the same for me

If I phone apple in the morning, will they send out another before I return this iMac or will I have to return and then wait for a new one

I'm going after Christmas to see what they say. I'm much too busy right now, but am very curious as to the cause of it.

I phoned Apple today

Zero arguments from them, it should be near silent i.e. no mechanical noises, they are sending me another out ASAP, i can keep the one i have until i receive the replacement unit

I even received the email confirming the order for the replacement while i was still on the phone to them

First class customer support :)

Hopefully the next one is good. I've had a refurb 680mx that I could hear the fan had something wrong with it like a bearing or almost like a wire hitting it kind of sound, but I got another one and don't hear the mechanical noise it was making, just what you hear of the air coming out from the vent in the back.

i have no problem with hearing a fan running i.e. the movement of air round the system, but i don't expect to here a faint mechanical whirl, which is what i can hear from this machine

fingers crossed the new machine will be perfect

Had to resist the urge to up the SSD size to 512 for the replacement :D

Wish you the best with a replacement.

I've had 5 iMacs so far. First was a return as I needed a bigger ssd, then I had a crackle at low brightness from the bottom left, next had fan bearing, next had the crackle, next had line on screen and fan bearing. I decided to keep the cravkling one as that can be stopped by higher brightness. The fan is super annoying once it's warm it's on constantly. Strangely any iMacs that had the crackle had silent fans.

People might not hear the crackle, it's high pitched and I have sensitive hearing

Hello

I received my iMac 2 weeks ago but only set it up the other day.

It came with ML on it and it has made an audible whir right from the box. Although I can't say I noticed it at first.

I have just done the SMC 1.1 update and no change. Still a very faint whirring noise. Nothing major but still annoying as I only sit 2' away from it.

Ive organised a call from apple tomorrow. I'll keep you updated.

This is a mechanical whir or just an audible whir? A slight audible whir is normal, mechanical whir is not.

Its only audible, Like the sound of a fan pushing air.

Gonna try mavericks see if this helps.

this is what i got on 2 of my iMac replacements. Stand up and place your ear above the screen. Shut down the computer, you will probably hear the fan slow to a stop and therefore the whir begin to slow as the fan does.

I can only assume apple are using noisy fans as it has happened on two of my systems.

I found this audible whir (different from pushing air) more annoying than the screen crackle.

Yes its more of a whir then air. Having trouble describing it.

Its just a noise I guess.

Is it worthy of a replacement?

I replaced mine and got one that didn't have the noise (as you say hard to explain). It had a different noise, a crackling at low brightness from the bottom left (different from the adhesive tape settling down).

So it really depends how much it bothers you. Personally it drove me mad, like a very quiet pneumatic drill going off constantly in the background.

The crackling annoys me too but at least it can be controlled by setting a higher brightness and it only really heard when the screen is displaying dark images and less than 5 bars brightness.

I cannot hear any noise from mines and I use it in a fairly quiet room. Makes a huge change from having an Antec 1200 based PC with a million fans

I don't think many people can hear the crackling. It is fairly high frequency on both machines it's happened on. My wife can't hear it

She could hear the noisy fan. But she put it down to a normal noise, I didn't, it's noisier than my other imac

I'll put my ear and see. I am thoroughly impressed with the machine. OS X is just so much easier to use. Multi desktops and how well its integrated is brilliant when working from home without needing more screens.
