Am I missing something...

The thread is about Haswell, and everyone is hung up on old tech like CD drive!!!

If apple were ever (I suspect never) to include a drive it would be blu-ray or else it would be seen as a retrograde step.

A Mac mini refresh would be killer right now. Since it doesn't get discreet graphics anymore, the leap from Intel 4000 to Haswell's 4700 is a big one.

... fast and cheap sharing of data and no external hardware and/or cables needed.

Fast?

1. Spend time trying to find blank media.
2. Pray for success burning.
3. Put it to an envelope or a box and pray that it wouldn't scratch.
4. After it's done, pray for success read.
5. In case of important backup, don't forget to check and reburn that backup to another DVD in 3 years, to avoid media degradation, so go to step 1.

Great. Now my iMac is obsolete. I wished it stayed current at least a few months more.

For what its worth you are always current until you buy a new iMac, welcome to the wonderful world of tech...

I actually had to use a CD yesterday to copy from photos over from Grandad to share online with somebody.

It'd be pretty great if the Apple SuperDrive would work with the iPad then my Grandad could have done it himself... :)

I'd love to see a 24-inch iMac as the 21.5-inch model is a little small and the 27-inch model is a little big.

Who needs an optical drive? Well.... I do for sure. An all-in-one isn't complete without opitcal drive. As long as there isn't any alternative for files larger than 2 GB this machine is limp.

IMO
I don't understand... I only need an optical drive when I'm forced to stick with that slow, bulky, inferior format. CD's and DVD's are like VHS tapes. I don't want to deal with them unless there's something mighty precious on them. Not only are the bulky, they make noise too. And those spin-up times.

What's confusing me is that you imply that optical discs are essential for 2 GB file storage, lol. An USB 3.0 stick with 64 GB is like... really cheap. With a typical equivalent reading speed of "17x" (DVD) or "5x" (Blu-ray).

Wait, wasn't that the reason that UBS thumb drives were invented

Unlikely.

By tomorrow

Mac Pro
Macbook Air
Macbook Pro

Once done...

iMac
Mac mini
Retina Macbook Pro

Storing on USB important media is not the good direction either.

For me the important media stays on my computer under RAID1 discs and with TimeMachine on external disc.

If it happened so soon, which I doubt, it would only be a CPU refresh. Don't think we'd see anything else major like a 780mx until Fall at the earliest but maybe not till 2014. The current 27in has only been shipping for 6 months.

I agree, will be only a CPU refresh, which has sense for a machine that cost quite a lot money to have the latest available as the competitors.

The question here is about backup/restore from CD's which is equally fraught with issues you describe. USB thumb drives are cheap and a better alternative to CD's IMHO.

If DVD is a dead medium why is Redbox flourishing?
If DVD is a dead medium why do my customers demand I put their films on it?
If DVD is a dead medium why are their sales doing great?
If DVD is a dead medium why doesn't the rest of the world know it?
If DVD is a dead medium why are the newest movies still released on it?

I know, maybe because only Apple fanboys think it is. If the new Mac Pro's don't include an optical drive I'm getting out of the damn sandbox. I'm sick of paying more for less.

Just buy an external blu-ray writer, then you can use it on any of your macs.

I think the point is users have not had a better choice of fast, cheap and reliable storage options, from USB thumb drives to online options and network storage or external DVDs.

If you need DVD you can still use it but for the majority why put in a slot which is just going to collect dust for a drive that in recent years has not been that reliable. At least with an external DVD if it breaks just plug in a new one.

Except there are archival grade DVD's and BluRay and no such thumbdrive

There are still approx 15,000 Black and White TV's in the UK, that's why. Oh wait we should still broadcast in B/W and supply B/W TV's because some people are either too tight a**** or will not move with the times.

Apple are not making you buy any of their products, you have a choice. Make it and move on pal.

Hardly anyone uses these drives now, you may as well say 'no all in one is complete without a floppy drive'. If you need the drive buy a USB external. If there is one included then the 99.9% of people who don't need it end up paying needlessly for it and the resources used to make it have been wasted.

Expect this

Faster CPU (Haswell)
Faster GPU (NVIDIA 700x Series)
Faster Wifi (802.11 AC)
Fusion Drive Standard
Facetime 1080p HD

Same Prices, Design, and Screen Sizes

Then you have to buy an external drive. What you don't realize is you are in the minority.

You've got no idea about what I realize or not.

Just buy an external blu-ray writer, then you can use it on any of your macs.

The only statement I want to make is that the iMac isn't an all-in-one anymore. And that I personaly miss the optical drive. Outside the "Apple bubble" we all live in, this isn't something conservative but realistic and practical.

A DVD costs $0,10 that's something you can give away. That doesn't work for flash drives.

But hey, I don't want you all to doubt Apple's vision!

Yeah, and if DVD is a dead medium why is Blockbusters doing so great... oh wait!
