... fast and cheap sharing of data and no external hardware and/or cables needed.
Great. Now my iMac is obsolete. I wished it stayed current at least a few months more.
I don't understand... I only need an optical drive when I'm forced to stick with that slow, bulky, inferior format. CD's and DVD's are like VHS tapes. I don't want to deal with them unless there's something mighty precious on them. Not only are the bulky, they make noise too. And those spin-up times.Who needs an optical drive? Well.... I do for sure. An all-in-one isn't complete without opitcal drive. As long as there isn't any alternative for files larger than 2 GB this machine is limp.
IMO
Fast?
1. Spend time trying to find blank media.
2. Pray for success burning.
3. Put it to an envelope or a box and pray that it wouldn't scratch.
4. After it's done, pray for success read.
5. In case of important backup, don't forget to check and reburn that backup to another DVD in 3 years, to avoid media degradation, so go to step 1.
Wait, wasn't that the reason that UBS thumb drives were invented![]()
If it happened so soon, which I doubt, it would only be a CPU refresh. Don't think we'd see anything else major like a 780mx until Fall at the earliest but maybe not till 2014. The current 27in has only been shipping for 6 months.
Storing on USB important media is not the good direction either.
For me the important media stays on my computer under RAID1 discs and with TimeMachine on external disc.

The question here is about backup/restore from CD's which is equally fraught with issues you describe. USB thumb drives are cheap and a better alternative to CD's IMHO.

If DVD is a dead medium why is Redbox flourishing?
If DVD is a dead medium why do my customers demand I put their films on it?
If DVD is a dead medium why are their sales doing great?
If DVD is a dead medium why doesn't the rest of the world know it?
If DVD is a dead medium why are the newest movies still released on it?
I know, maybe because only Apple fanboys think it is. If the new Mac Pro's don't include an optical drive I'm getting out of the damn sandbox. I'm sick of paying more for less.

Then you have to buy an external drive. What you don't realize is you are in the minority.
Just buy an external blu-ray writer, then you can use it on any of your macs.
