I just wish it wasn't kept such a mystery and we could know when the next update is coming. This crap is freaking stressful..

Oh I know right. I sold my old computer a few months ago, bought a 2012 imac, sent it back to get a different bto setup, then decided to wait for the Mac Pro, now after WWDC I'm deciding to wait for an iMac refresh.

Hope the next imac will be a 32" inch 4k resolution screen with 6 core cpu, 2 thunderbolt and 4 usb 3.0 ports.

glare or no glare? that is the question!

well, i mean - just MY question. is anyone still bothered by the screen glare issue on this model?? - despite Apple's "fix" for it? every time i check it out in a store, i can clearly see light sources beaming all around me in the background - and i know in my office and living space, there's just no way i can move windows and lamps to agree with where i need my new iMac to be. a matte screen is not 100% better of course, but it's A LOT better than any screen with any bit of gloss to it.

anyone...? anyone...? ...Bueller?

Anyone remember all the complaints about Apple not putting Blu Ray drives into products? It was, and still is, totally obvious that they never would; it's optical tech that appeared too late in the life of spinning plastic things, just when optical tech is gradually fading away... but fickle, self-focused consumers aren't always the best inspiration for product design - they want what they use, they don't consider the wider scope of time, and eventual redundancy of tech which they expect Apple to include, to "fill the gap" temporarily, as it were.

I cannot think of one single instance in my entire digital life, when I have thought "ah! better back this up to blu ray" - at best, it's a niche optical technology for films, not for backups where there exists hard drives and NAS boxes with 20-40x the capacity, RE-USABLE!

Blu ray came too late in the game, DVD is still used but less and less so. If you think Apple are going to cater for the minority, you should study Apple's design philosophy deeper.

32Tb of RAM, too? :p

Have you ever tried to upload a 2GB file.

Yes it's much quicker to upload it than for a slow DVD burner to trundle it's way along with the cost etc.

We are in the age of super fast BB I upload 30GB files with zero issues!

Hell my online backups are in the terabyte range.

I see zero reason for a CD/DVD drive. Now if you had said there needs to be room for more harddrives I would agree, both the imac, mac pros, mac book pros could do with expansion slots, i hate external caddies when there is room for an apple style stick of gum hard drive expansion type slot. The 13 inch retina pro has a huge gap under the mouse pad perfect for something like this.

Expensive machines like this should not have the indignity of being attached to ugly external drives especially laptops.

I am happy with my nice stack of externals near my iMac; however, I agree with you that the mobile externals could use some design work.

Hell, it would be nice to have that screen for the Mac Pro.:rolleyes:

Update GFX cards.
Fusion as standard.
They'll have 3 instant sales from my family.

I am guessing that any update will be in the October window. I was thinking that it would be just a spec bump with Hasewell but now I am not so sure. After the MP sneak peek, TB2 for sure. And maybe a monitor upgrade? I am expecting better GPU performance in the next iteration. And, shouldn't we expect an update to Apple's Thunderbolt Display? If there is, I would expect the display to be physically similar and visually identical to the iMac. I am not expecting 4K, but an upgrade nonetheless.

As you just said "nothing beats a DVD for YOU".

External HDD / SSD, USB drive etc. There are many alternatives out there, it's not apples fault if you choose not to use them. Likewise, they aren't going to bring back the optical drive when so few people actually used it.

And if you're really that bothered, buy an external optional drive.

And what exactly removal of optical drive in iMac does for YOU? It's not like this reduced iMac price. Sure, the drive would make more sense if it was BluRay but we all know this is not happening.

Imac update to haswell?

I ordered imac last june, what if they updated the imac to haswell during my shipping period? can i return it back to get the latest one?

Is this still expected to be released sometime this month?

There is nothing to indicate it happening. I think Apple is holding out for either:

a) Mavericks release
or
b) Thunderbolt 2.0
or
c) Newer Haswell Desktop processors coming out

I wish they would release it this month...it would probably feature the new wireless 'standard', PCIE SSD, Haswell, and 7xxm graphics....oh well.

A is definitely unlikely. Apple won't hold it back until Mavericks is released.

When I bought my 2011 iMac just after it was released, Lion came out one month later (so the iMac shipped with SL). Apple just gave me a free upgrade to Lion from the App Store. The whole process was easy. Just enter the serial number on Apple's website, get a voucher code for the App Store, enter it in the MAS and download...

Maybe it's Thunderbolt 2 they're waiting for. But the Iris Pro Haswell CPU's are shipping in the next week or so (System76's Galago UltraPro laptop with Haswell i7-4750HQ with Iris Pro is shipping "mid to late July").

Tbh, I don't care about Thunderbolt 2 that much. Maybe for professionals it's great, but I don't really see any pros for the consumer over USB 3, which is way more available + cheaper than Thunderbolt.

I expect mavricks in oct so maybe iMac a month before in September so they can stage their releases

Hopefully with an updated NVIDIA GPU and 1 GB VRAM also for 21.5 inch iMacs.

or the summary:

Expect this

Faster CPU (Haswell)
Faster GPU (NVIDIA 700x Series)
Faster Wifi (802.11 AC)
Fusion Drive Standard
Facetime 1080p HD

Same Prices, Design, and Screen Sizes

Not Yet..

The article says June or July, and here it is in mid August and still no new iMacs available. I'm hoping for faster processor and maybe even a lower price. Maybe October? The waiting is the hardest part.
